Background

Asa Shigure’s Appearance in Anime
Asa Shigure is the daughter of Ama Shigure, a devil, and an unidentified human father, making her a half-human, half-demon hybrid. This heritage is kept secret, and as a result of her mixed lineage, Asa frequently suffered from illness in her youth because her human body could not tolerate the magical powers she inherited from her mother.
At Verbena Academy, Asa is known for her playful personality and her trademark greeting of slapping Rin Tsuchimi on the back each morning, often accompanied by teasing or lighthearted flirtation. Although many male students reportedly had crushes on her, she rejected their advances, and the series does not explore these relationships in depth. In the visual novel, Asa hints at romantic feelings for Rin, stating, “But if it’s Rin-kun, it might be good to fall in love…”
In the anime adaptation and Asa’s route in the visual novel, Rin confesses his feelings for her, and they become a couple. However, Asa’s chronic illness worsens due to her refusal to use her demonic magic, the only means of curing herself. Her condition deteriorates to the point of near-death, culminating in a dramatic scene at the overlook where Rin had first confessed his love. Desperate to convince her, Rin injures himself with a box cutter, declaring he cannot live without her. This act persuades Asa to finally use her magic, saving both Rin and herself.
Appearance
Asa Shigure is portrayed as a slender young woman with bright green hair and green eyes, a distinctive feature that visually connects her to her mother, Ama Shigure. She typically wears her hair in a short, layered style with bangs framing her face, reflecting her active and casual personality.
Her school uniform at Verbena Academy consists of the standard female outfit—a white blouse with green trim, a dark pleated skirt, and a yellow ribbon tied at the collar. Outside of school, Asa often dresses in comfortable casual clothing suited to her energetic demeanor, such as light tops and skirts or aprons when cooking.
Despite her cheerful appearance, Asa’s pale complexion subtly conveys her delicate health, a reminder of her weak constitution inherited from her demonic lineage. Her overall design combines vibrancy and vulnerability, symbolizing her struggle between her human limitations and her suppressed magical heritage.
Personality
Although she was born with a frail body, Asa Shigure is known for her energetic and upbeat personality. Outgoing and confident, she often acts as a mood-setter among her peers. Despite her tomboyish tendencies, she possesses traditionally feminine skills such as cooking, for which she is well regarded. Her trademark greeting, “Hello!”, and her frequent use of English loan words highlight her lively and approachable nature.
Asa is responsible and diligent, readily participating in group activities and supporting her friends when needed. Beneath her cheerful demeanor, however, she occasionally shows a dependence on others, particularly during moments of emotional or physical weakness. She enjoys simple pleasures such as hard work and eating cake, which reflects her lighthearted yet grounded disposition.
Due to her half-demon heritage, Asa harbors a deep dislike of magic. Her aversion stems from her childhood, when her demonic powers frequently made her ill, reinforcing her desire to rely solely on her human strength.
Relationships
Rin Tsuchimi
Rin Tsuchimi is Asa’s close friend and junior at Verbena Academy. Their relationship is characterized by playful teasing and mutual respect. In the anime adaptation, Asa is the heroine whom Rin ultimately chooses, and the two enter a romantic relationship after developing strong emotional trust and affection.
Ama Shigure
Ama Shigure, Asa’s mother, is a devil who raised Asa with care despite the challenges of her daughter’s frail health. The two share a close and affectionate bond, though Ama’s playful and sometimes embarrassing behavior often flusters Asa. Ama tended to Asa during her frequent illnesses and would trim her hair whenever it grew long, small gestures that highlight their familial warmth.
Kaede Fuyou
Kaede Fuyou is Asa’s junior and fellow member of the cooking club. The two became friends after Kaede joined the club during middle school. However, their friendship was temporarily strained when Kaede, during a mental breakdown triggered by jealousy over Rin, attacked Asa in a fit of rage. The assault caused Asa to collapse and suffer a heart attack. Deeply remorseful afterward, Kaede later apologized, and Asa forgave her, understanding the emotional turmoil behind the incident. They eventually reconciled and continued their friendship.
Kareha
Kareha is Asa’s best friend and classmate. The two are frequently seen together, and Kareha often becomes excited over Asa’s interactions with Rin, enthusiastically supporting the idea of their relationship.
Primula
Primula is a close friend of Asa’s and a member of Rin’s circle. Although their interactions are limited compared to others, Asa treats her kindly and supports her as part of their shared group of friends.
Etymology
The given name Asa (亜沙) is composed of the kanji a (亜), meaning “second” or “Asia,” and sa (沙), meaning “sand.” Together, the name can be interpreted as “Asian sand” or “second sand,” though it carries no explicit meaning within the series.
The surname Shigure (時雨) translates to “drizzle” or “late autumn rain,” often referring to light, fleeting showers that occur during the changing seasons in Japan. Symbolically, the name “Shigure” evokes a sense of transience and melancholy, qualities that subtly align with Asa’s delicate health and emotional resilience throughout the story.
