Arc Lalatoya

Arc (アーク, Āku), later known asArc Lalatoya (アーク・ララトイア, Āku Raratoia), is the main protagonist of the Skeleton Knight in Another World (Gaikotsu Kishi-sama, Tadaima Isekai e Odekake-chū) series. Originally a human player who fell asleep while playing an online game, he awakens in a fantasy world inhabiting the body of his in-game avatar, a powerful knight clad in full armor with a skeletal appearance beneath. As he navigates this unfamiliar world, Arc embarks on a journey of adventure, self-discovery, and justice while concealing his true form from those around him.

Appearance in Anime

Arc’s in-game avatar takes the form of a towering armored knight, clad in silver full-body armor accented with white and blue. He also wears a dark mantle that resembles a slice of the night sky, giving the impression of being woven from starlight. Standing at approximately two meters tall, Arc’s imposing figure exudes power and authority. Beneath the armor, however, lies his most distinctive feature, an animated skeleton with glowing blue lights in his eye sockets, a result of his unexplained transformation upon entering the fantasy world.

Later in the series, Arc discovers a mystical spring capable of temporarily restoring him to a living form. In this state, his original avatar is revealed to be that of a tall, muscular Dark Elf with brown skin. His elven appearance includes long, pointed ears, flowing curly black hair, a defined jawline, and dark red eyes traits that contribute to a striking and notably handsome appearance.

Arc’s real-world appearance prior to his reincarnation remains unknown, as it has never been depicted in the series.

Personality

Arc is a generally laid-back and practical individual with a love for travel and exploration. Though he can be opportunistic often seeking ways to earn money during his adventures, he is not motivated by greed. Instead, he maintains a strong moral compass and is quick to intervene when confronted with injustice or wrongdoing. His skeletal form appears to limit his ability to experience intense negative emotions, which contributes to his calm and collected behavior.

As an avid fan of video games, anime, and movies from his former life, Arc frequently references pop culture, often narrating his experiences with humorous comparisons. For example, he likens himself to Indiana Jones while navigating ancient ruins, quotes Star Wars during battle by exclaiming, “I will show you the power of the Force!”, and once humorously compared an enemy to a cook from the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece.

Despite his noble qualities and general sense of honor, Arc occasionally displays lecherous tendencies most notably showing a fixation on Ariane’s chest, much to her annoyance.

Background

Arc was originally a Japanese gamer who worked as a freelance artist in the real world. According to his own account, he spent most of his life living in the city. One day, after falling asleep while playing an online game, he awoke to find himself inexplicably transported into the game’s world fully inhabiting the body of his in-game avatar.

Now trapped in a fantasy realm and appearing as an armored skeletal knight, Arc sets out to explore this new world, seeking answers about his situation while adapting to life in a reality far removed from his own.

Abilities and Powers

Arc is an extraordinarily powerful individual, having reached the maximum level of 255 in his original game through extensive grinding. His equipment is of mythical grade quality, and his primary class is Heavenly Knight, with a subclass of Pope. Because he now resides in a world outside the game, Arc retains access to all the skills he acquired through the prerequisite job classes required to become a Heavenly Knight. These include Mage, Sorcerer, Summoner, Warrior, Knight, Holy Knight, Priest, Bishop, and Pope granting him a vast array of magical, healing, and combat abilities.

Physically, Arc possesses immense strength far beyond that of an ordinary human. He has demonstrated the ability to bend iron bars effortlessly, punch with enough force to create blasts of air pressure, and break through stone walls or even tear holes in ships with his bare hands. He is also capable of grappling and overpowering large monsters without relying on magic, showcasing the raw physical power of his avatar.

In addition to his strength, Arc has exceptional kinetic vision, enabling him to detect and respond to rapid movements during battle. Later in the series, when he temporarily regains his original avatar form as a Dark Elf, he is shown to have the ability to perceive spiritual magic, though not as acutely as a full-blooded elf like Ariane.

Equipment

Arc is equipped with a set of powerful, mythical-grade items that significantly enhance his combat capabilities. His primary armor is the Belenus Holy Armor, which provides exceptional defensive strength while also restoring a fixed amount of health over time. In addition to bolstering his attack power and resistance to curses, the armor reduces incoming fire and light-element damage by half, making it ideal for a variety of battle scenarios.

Draped over his armor is the Overcoat of the Night Sky, a mantle that not only reduces damage from darkness-based attacks but also passively restores Arc’s mana over time. It grants the additional benefit of regenerating magical energy at regular intervals, further supporting his ability to maintain prolonged combat engagements.

For defense, Arc wields the Holy Shield of Teutates, which offers high durability and protection. The shield nullifies knockback effects and increases resistance to all abnormal status conditions, making Arc highly resilient against both physical and magical disruptions.

His primary weapon is the Holy Thunder Sword of Caladbolg, a powerful blade that boosts both attack power and agility. The sword features a special attack capable of dealing devastating damage; however, its use comes with a drawback, temporarily lowering Arc’s overall power as a penalty.

Relationships

Ariane
Ariane is one of the first allies Arc makes after awakening in the game world. Their initial meeting occurs when Ariane mistakes him for a slaver while trying to rescue elven children. Their second encounter sees Arc using teleportation magic to protect the same children, earning Ariane’s reluctant trust. Though she is initially wary of him due to her negative experiences with humans, her opinion changes after witnessing Arc’s kindness especially his bond with the spirit creature Ponta and his use of anti-curse and healing magic on the enslaved elves. Recognizing his strength and good intentions, Ariane hires him as a mercenary, and their collaboration leads her to bring him to her village for continued work. Arc deeply trusts Ariane and values their partnership, though he occasionally feels hurt by her blunt remarks, such as being called a “walking disaster” or “battle maniac.” Still, Ariane clearly cares about him, staying by his side when he falls into a coma after experiencing his repressed emotions. Their interactions, along with reactions from Ariane’s family and others, suggest that she harbors romantic feelings for Arc. Although Arc shows signs of reciprocation, he remains largely oblivious to her affections and often receives intimidating glares from her when interacting with other women.

Ponta
Ponta is Arc’s loyal spirit companion. After rescuing and healing her from a trap, Ponta immediately becomes attached to him. She is rarely seen far from Arc, usually resting atop his helmet or curled around his neck. Her presence is not only a source of comfort for Arc but also serves as a symbol of his kind nature.

Chiyome
Chiyome meets Arc while he is freeing elven children in Diento. Initially mistaking him for an enemy, she changes her opinion upon seeing Ponta and hearing Arc refer to her as a “ninja.” Realizing he shares her goals, she entrusts him with key information and later seeks his help in freeing beastmen slaves. Arc reveals his teleportation magic to her, allowing for a more efficient and safer rescue operation. Chiyome is impressed by his outrage at the inhumane treatment of the slaves and watches as he destroys the slavers’ base in seconds. Their alliance grows stronger during their time in the East Revlon Empire, where she joins Arc and Ariane’s group. Chiyome admires Arc’s cooking, tolerates his eccentric behavior more than Ariane does, and views him with deep respect and affection, even seeing him as an older brother figure. Her trust in Arc is strong enough that she introduces him to Hanzo Hattori and continues to support his efforts.

Dillan
Dillan, Ariane’s father and one of the elven elders, is someone Arc holds in high regard. Upon learning of Arc’s role in rescuing elven slaves, Dillan permits him to enter the hidden elven village of Lalatoya even before knowing Arc’s true race. Although initially believed to be a human cursed into a skeletal form, Arc later discovers he is actually a Dark Elf. Dillan recognizes Arc’s potential as a powerful ally and values his efforts in strengthening relations between elves and humans. After Arc returns from the Dragon’s Crown and confirms his Dark Elf heritage, he is formally welcomed as a member of Lalatoya. Dillan expresses deep gratitude for Arc’s protection of Ariane and his contributions to the elven community.

Trivia

    • Arc has a fondness for tomatoes and is an exceptionally skilled cook, a talent he developed during his years of living alone. He is also a talented artist; one of his past creations was featured in multiple art exhibits prior to his arrival in the other world. His birthday is listed as June 29.
      • Due to his skeletal condition, Arc lacks the capacity to feel strong negative emotions and is seemingly immune to the effects of alcohol. He also admits to having a poor sense of direction, a trait that has occasionally earned him cold glares or teasing remarks from Ariane. Despite these quirks, Arc is thoughtful and often wonders whether his actions might alter the course of fate though he typically dismisses the concern. Ironically, his interference has significantly changed the destinies of numerous individuals and even entire nations, such as the Rhoden Kingdom, the Nozhan Kingdom, and the Great Canada Forest. In the anime, Ariane herself states that meeting Arc changed her fate (as seen in Episode 3).
      • Arc typically travels disguised in full body armor, leading most people to assume he is a traditional knight. In the light novel, he stores water from a curse-purging hot spring in a leather flask, which allows him to temporarily return to his original Dark Elf form. He uses this transformation particularly when meeting nobles or those who might be alarmed by his skeletal appearance.
      • In different adaptations of the series, Arc’s first meeting with Ariane varies. In the anime, they cross paths after he emerges from defeating a bandit group, prompting Ariane to mistake him for a kidnapper. In contrast, the manga and light novel depict their meeting during Ariane’s ambush on a convoy transporting enslaved elven children. Additionally, in the web novel version, Arc becomes an adventurer rather than a mercenary.
      • Felfi Visrotte, a character in the series, notes that Arc reminds her of Evangeline the first founder of the Great Canada Forest though she remarks that Arc is far more respectful in comparison. A recurring gag in the manga involves Eevin, Ariane’s older sister, displaying jealousy toward Arc. During these moments, Arc often shivers and wonders if a skeleton can catch a cold, much to the confusion of those around him.
