Background and Personality

Arba was once a trusted ally of Solomon, serving as one of his three wise magi in Alma Torran. Initially devoted to Solomon’s cause, she fought alongside the Resistance to overthrow the Orthodox Sorcerer Church. However, her deep-seated fanaticism and unwavering belief in Ill Ilah eventually led her to betray Solomon, aligning herself with the very forces she once opposed.

Arba’s devotion to Ill Ilah drove her to found Al-Thamen, a secretive organization dedicated to spreading chaos and black rukh to revive Ill Ilah. Her betrayal caused the destruction of Alma Torran, forcing Solomon and his allies to create a new world. Arba’s cunning, ambition, and fanatical dedication make her one of the most dangerous characters in the series.

A collection of Durkheim's courses on the origins of socialism (1896), edited and published by his nephew, Marcel Mauss, in 1928

With a chilling grin that exudes malice, Arba’s unsettling smile reflects her sinister nature and the ominous power she wields in the shadows.

Abilities

  • Divine Staff Mastery:As one of Solomon’s magi, Arba wielded a Divine Staff, allowing her to cast incredibly powerful spells and control rukh with precision.
  • Black Rukh Manipulation:After her fall from grace, Arba became a master of black rukh, using it to spread corruption, manipulate others, and summon powerful destructive magic.
  • Possession:Arba has the ability to transfer her soul into new hosts. She used this ability to take over the bodies of her descendants, first Kou Empress Gyokuen Ren and later her daughter, Hakuei Ren.
  • Magical Expertise:Second only to Solomon, Arba’s magical skills are unparalleled. She combines vast knowledge of magical arts with her ruthless intellect, making her a formidable opponent.

Role in the Story

Arba’s actions are pivotal to the central conflict of Magi. As the founder of Al-Thamen, she is responsible for much of the chaos and suffering in both Alma Torran and the new world. Her manipulation of the Kou Empire through her control of Gyokuen Ren allows her to wield significant political power, furthering Al-Thamen’s agenda to spread black rukh and revive Ill Ilah.

Her ultimate goal is to undo Solomon’s creation of the new world and restore the corrupted deity Ill Ilah to power. To this end, she orchestrates numerous schemes, manipulating events from behind the scenes and clashing directly with the series’ protagonists.

Relationships

  • Solomon Jehoahaz Abraham:Once a loyal follower, Arba betrayed Solomon, rejecting his ideals of freedom and peace in favor of worshiping Ill Ilah. Her betrayal marked the beginning of Alma Torran’s downfall.
  • Ugo:As another of Solomon’s trusted magi, Ugo viewed Arba’s betrayal as a personal failure, leading him to imprison her and Al-Thamen in an alternate dimension.
  • Gyokuen Ren:Arba possessed her descendant, Gyokuen Ren, to influence the Kou Empire and Al-Thamen’s goals. Gyokuen served as her primary vessel for many years.
  • Hakuei Ren:Arba later took control of Hakuei’s body, continuing her schemes through her younger descendant.

Legacy and Themes

Arba’s legacy is one of destruction and betrayal. Her fanaticism led to the fall of Alma Torran and shaped the conflict in the new world. As the founder of Al-Thamen, her influence persists throughout the series, making her one of the driving forces behind the chaos the protagonists face.

Her manipulative nature, magical prowess, and unyielding devotion to Ill Ilah establish her as a deeply complex and menacing antagonist. Through Arba, Magi explores themes of betrayal, fanaticism, and the consequences of blind faith.
