Appearance
Megumin’s full apperance.
Kazuma often describes Aqua as possessing an unparalleled beauty, one that transcends the limits of human standards. She is noted for her striking light blue hair and eyes, complemented by a slender yet curvaceous figure. Aqua has a pronounced bust, long legs, wide hips, and a waist-length mane of blue hair, which is elegantly tied into a loop with a spherical clip. Her measurements are 83 cm (bust), 56 cm (waist), and 83 cm (hips) (33/22/33 inches), and she stands at 5’2″ (157 cm), weighing 132 lbs (59.9 kg).
Her typical attire includes a sleeveless, dark-blue vest with white trim, paired with a short, dark-blue miniskirt. Aqua also wears a green bow across her chest, adorned with a blue gem at the center, and a translucent purple underskirt. She completes the ensemble with detached white sleeves, decorated with blue and gold trimmings, as well as thigh-high blue-heeled boots worn over white stockings with blue accents.
At times, Aqua dons a divine relic—a translucent pink hagoromo—which she can summon or dismiss at will. Her hair clip, uniquely designed, also takes the form of an H2O molecule, further emphasizing her connection to the water element.
Personality
At first glance, Aqua may seem like the epitome of divine grace, but in reality, she’s the complete opposite of what one might expect from a goddess. Far from dignified, Aqua is often sloppy, cocky, and ill-mannered. Though she has moments of motherly affection, her lack of tact and tendency to insult others frequently lands her in trouble, as she tends to speak without considering the consequences. Despite criticizing Kazuma for being a “shut-in NEET,” Aqua herself is hardly productive, often spending her days indulging in parties and excessive drinking—although she’s far more enthusiastic about socializing than Kazuma.
Aqua’s intellectual shortcomings are a constant source of trouble. Absent-minded, forgetful, and unable to comprehend complex situations, she regularly fails to read the room or grasp important details. This lack of intelligence, combined with her notoriously poor luck, ensures that many of her plans end in “critical failure.” However, she isn’t without some redeeming qualities—Aqua is occasionally intuitive and sharp when the situation demands it, often picking up on her party’s schemes or reacting quickly in moments of focus.
Despite her flaws, Aqua is a sensitive and emotional character, often prone to tears when scared, upset, or traumatized. Like a child, she sometimes fakes crying to manipulate situations in her favor, throwing tantrums when things don’t go her way. Her bohemian lifestyle is further evidenced by her wasteful habits, as she spends her earnings without regard for the future. Yet, as a goddess, Aqua is highly sensitive to comments about her age and will quickly react to any perceived insult regarding it.
In true divine fashion, Aqua shares some of the less virtuous traits of her followers. While in Heaven, she was known to deceive the newly deceased, hiding the realities of the Parallel World to encourage reincarnation there. She even supports her followers’ schemes, participating in scams like those during the Eris Festival and deceiving strangers for petty gains when it suits her. Despite her position, Aqua is self-centered and spoiled, often expecting praise and attention due to her status, though she rarely receives it. Her greed manifests in her constant attempts to claim a larger share of rewards, with the promise of treasure sometimes being her sole motivation to get moving.
Aqua’s disdain for demons and the undead is another defining aspect of her personality, and she frequently clashes with characters like Vanir and Zeeleschilt. However, unlike other gods, Aqua shows a surprising level of flexibility in her relationships with the undead, sympathizing with individuals like Keele and apologizing to the Succubi, even developing a bond with characters like Wiz and Anna, though she continues to bully Wiz. Nevertheless, Aqua takes her role as the goddess of guiding souls to the Afterlife seriously, fulfilling her duties with dedication.
Though Aqua’s actions can be selfish at times, she is fiercely loyal to those she cares about. She has risked her life for her followers and never considered abandoning Kazuma, even in the face of a more comfortable life promised by Mitsurugi. Her loyalty extends to her party as well, with Aqua willing to stand by Kazuma, even if it means living as a fugitive. As long as she’s enjoying herself, Aqua will stay by Kazuma’s side, no matter the circumstances.
History
Early Life
As the goddess worshipped by the Axis Order in the Parallel World, Aqua was entrusted with the responsibility of guiding deceased Japanese individuals to reincarnate there, a task that was deemed crucial for saving the world from the looming threat of the Devil King. However, rather than fully embracing her divine duties, Aqua spent much of her time in Heaven indulging in manga and video games, leaving the more serious aspects of her role to Eris, who often had to pick up the slack. When Aqua did engage in her duties, it was typically half-heartedly, leading to numerous oversights. For example, she forgot about many of the individuals she had sent to the Parallel World, such as Mitsurugi, and allowed unsuitable candidates, like the Head Researcher, to reincarnate with overwhelming abilities, undermining the balance she was supposed to maintain.
Although centuries passed in the Parallel World before Aqua was eventually dragged there herself, the time dilation between Heaven and the Parallel World meant that Aqua experienced only a brief stretch of time compared to Kazuma, feeling as though her existence there was almost as short-lived as his.
Abilities
As a goddess, Aqua’s power is tied to the devotion of her followers. While her strength was significantly diminished after descending to the mortal realm, she remains the most powerful member of Kazuma’s party. Despite her impressive stats, including magical power that exceeds even Megumin’s, Aqua’s intellect and luck are low, with her stats already maxed out. She is highly specialized, with her abilities primarily effective against demons and undead.
Holy Magic
After descending into the mortal plane, Aqua took on the Arch Priest class, granting her access to a vast array of holy magic, including healing, support buffs, and demon- and undead-banishing spells.
- Heal: Instantly heals a person’s wounds.
- Sacred Highness Heal: A stronger healing spell capable of restoring erased memories.
- Turn Undead: Summons light to send undead beings to the afterlife.
- Sacred Turn Undead: A more powerful version of Turn Undead that can purify even a lich.
- Exorcism: Creates a pillar of light to repel demons, strong enough to stop a possessed Darkness.
- Sacred Exorcism: A potent version of Exorcism, fired as a beam from Aqua’s forehead, capable of potentially destroying an Archdemon like Vanir.
- Break Spell: Dispel magic and curses.
- Sacred Break Spell: A stronger version of Break Spell, able to break magical barriers.
- Cure Poison: Detoxifies a person’s body.
- Refresh: Lowers a person’s body temperature.
Supporting Buffs
Aqua can cast several support spells to greatly enhance the abilities of her allies:
- Blessing: Increases luck.
- Powered: Boosts strength.
- Haste: Increases speed.
- Protection: Increases physical resistance.
- Resistance: Increases magical resistance.
- Reflect: Reflects an opponent’s attack back at them.
- Force Fire: Draws the attention of nearby monsters.
- Eyes of Providence: Allows the user or target to see and communicate with ghosts, as well as detect invisible objects.
- Magic Seal: Seals the power of someone or something, even capable of containing an Archdemon’s strength.
- Divine Circle: Creates a magic circle to repel ghosts, undead, demons, and monsters, and can be used to set up protective barriers around an area.
- Resurrection: Revives a recently deceased person, with Aqua capable of bypassing the usual limits to resurrect the same individual multiple times, though not those whose bodies have been destroyed or those who died of natural causes.
Water Magic
As the goddess of water, Aqua possesses powerful water-based abilities, including the ability to manipulate water and breathe underwater.
- Create Water: Summons a jet of pure water from atmospheric moisture.
- Sacred Create Water: Summons a massive torrent of water capable of flooding an entire city and destroying buildings.
- Purification: Purifies contaminated liquids by touch, including water, hot springs, coffee, or tea. Aqua lacks control over this ability, as any liquid she touches becomes purified.
- Holy Water: Converts purified liquids into holy water, which is highly effective against undead and can enhance weapons or protect against illness. Aqua’s own bodily fluids, like tears, are especially potent against undead.
Party Tricks
Aqua has invested her points into the “Party Trick” skill tree, using her skills primarily for entertainment and amusement.
- Nature’s Beauty: Creates an effect where water spouts from fans in her hands and a flower blooms from a pot on her head.
- Versatile Entertainer: Enables Aqua to mimic anyone’s voice.
- Hundred Hazes: The ultimate party trick, taking half a day to complete.
- Master Artist: Aqua can create detailed art and crafts, from clay models to intricate sand and soap sculptures. She could make a living from her talents but refuses to do so due to her lazy and greedy nature.
- Construction Master: A skilled construction worker capable of repairing large structures, like a wall damaged by Explosion Magic, in a single day.
God Skills
As a goddess, Aqua possesses unique abilities tied to her divine nature, though her fall from Heaven has weakened some of these powers.
- God Blow: A powerful fist strike infused with a goddess’s rage, capable of purifying undead and dealing physical damage.
- God Requiem: A lethal hook attack that can also purify, used in a unique anime-exclusive skill.
- Holy Aura: Causes pain to undead and demons that touch Aqua, with prolonged exposure being lethal. It also disrupts the effectiveness of lie-detecting magic. Undead are drawn to Aqua’s aura, seeking “salvation.”
- Night Vision: Allows Aqua to see clearly in the dark, a lesser form of her previous omniscience.
- Undead/Demon Detection: Aqua can detect the presence of undead and demons by scent, as well as communicate with ghosts and poltergeists, even if they are invisible.
- Multilingual: Aqua speaks several languages, including Japanese, the Parallel World language, the language of spirits, and the elemental tongue.
- Divine Protection: Protects Aqua from mind-reading and attempts to manipulate her, causing anyone who tries to detect her location or intentions to be blinded by a bright light.
Relationships
Kazuma Satou
Kazuma was the first person Aqua met in the Parallel World, though she initially dismissed him as a pitiable, laughable figure. However, after being forced to accompany him into the Parallel World, Aqua develops a complex mix of contempt and dependence toward him. Despite their constant bickering and Aqua’s often useless contributions, the two share an inseparable bond and are almost always seen together. Aqua frequently mocks Kazuma by calling him a “Shut-in NEET,” and Kazuma, in turn, finds Aqua an annoyance.
Although they regularly argue and highlight each other’s flaws—often ending with Aqua in tears—their mutual care for one another is undeniable. Aqua has shown concern for Kazuma on several occasions, such as when Wiz uses Drain Touch on him or when she tried to break him out of jail after his wrongful arrest. Despite Aqua’s insistence on being treated with more respect due to her goddess status—especially for repeatedly resurrecting him—she addresses Kazuma with honorifics like “-san” or “-sama” in more serious situations. Although their relationship is deeply rooted in mutual dependence and care, it remains strictly platonic, with no romantic tension between them.
Megumin
Aqua and Megumin share a strong bond as fellow party members. Their personalities align in many ways, leading to mutual understanding and camaraderie, both on and off the battlefield. When Kazuma refuses to accompany Megumin to cast Explosion at Verdia’s castle, Aqua secretly joins her, suggesting a deeper, supportive friendship between the two. Their relationship is marked by unspoken sympathy and shared experiences within the party.
Darkness
Aqua and Darkness share a friendly relationship, though their interactions are relatively limited. Darkness seems to trust Aqua’s intuition and often shares her concerns, especially when they encounter the formidable Mitsurugi. Aqua is largely unfazed by Darkness’s masochistic tendencies, showing tolerance and a lack of judgment towards her eccentricities.
Wiz
While Aqua often makes life difficult for Wiz, her playful bullying comes from a place of fondness. Aqua frequently visits Wiz’s shop to purify items, even going so far as to rub holy water on the shop’s door handles, causing Wiz to suffer the painful effects. Despite Aqua’s teasing, she genuinely cares for Wiz and doesn’t want to harm Vanir, fearing it would upset her friend. Aqua often finds herself visiting the lich’s shop when bored, further cementing their odd but affectionate bond.
Eris
Aqua and Eris share a complex, often teasing relationship. As a senior goddess, Aqua is aware of Eris’ insecurities and secret practices, such as her use of breast pads and her occasional trips to the Parallel World. Aqua feels a sense of envy toward Eris, who is more widely worshiped, despite being considered a lower-class goddess. Aqua frequently teases Eris, viewing her as somewhat immature. Despite their rivalry, Aqua does demonstrate care for Eris, helping her out when she struggles with her divine duties. She often ribs her junior goddess, calling her “hopeless,” yet there is a level of protective affection beneath Aqua’s teasing.
Cecily
Cecily’s loyalty to Aqua runs deep, as she is fully aware of Aqua’s true identity as a goddess. She acts as a humble servant, following Aqua’s commands with admiration. However, Cecily’s influence over Aqua can be somewhat detrimental, as she inadvertently spoils Aqua, inflating her ego and encouraging some of her more indulgent behaviors. Cecily, being more level-headed and pragmatic, often acts as the voice of reason, guiding Aqua when she loses focus or gets caught up in her whims.
Equipment
-
Feather Cloak: A divine treasure imbued with powerful magic, the Feather Cloak provides Aqua with exceptional protection. It prevents all status ailments and is highly resistant to damage. Additionally, the cloak has the unique ability to inflate with air at her command, allowing for short-range flight and serving as a mode of transportation for Aqua and her party.
-
Scepter: Aqua wields a magical scepter that responds to her summons, flying to her side when called. When casting spells, the closed flower at the scepter’s tip blooms, enhancing the potency of her magic and providing a boost to any spells she casts.
