Aoi Hyōdō (兵藤 葵, Hyōdō Aoi) is a supporting character in Kaichou wa Maid-sama!. He is the nephew of Satsuki, the owner of Maid Latte, the café where Misaki Ayuzawa works. Aoi is known for his past as a child net idol and professional cross-dresser, gaining popularity for his striking appearance and online presence. Despite his initial success in the entertainment world, he later pursues a career as a fashion designer.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Aoi Hyōdō has a strong affinity for cute, pretty, and fashionable things and enjoys being the center of attention. He takes pleasure in toying with the feelings of men to validate his perceived cuteness but is ultimately exposed as a boy by Misaki Ayuzawa. Aoi harbors a deep dislike for mundane knowledge, adults, children, school, and academic-related activities, including his classmates and teachers. His temperament is notably short, and he exhibits little patience in frustrating situations.
Aoi is also prone to embarrassment when displaying acts of kindness or affection, often reacting with sudden bursts of anger to conceal his emotions. He frequently faces conflict at home, as his father, Satsuki’s brother, disapproves of his cross-dressing and often expels him from the house. Due to past bullying for his interest in feminine aesthetics, Aoi chooses to express himself through dressing as a girl rather than openly embracing his preferences as a boy.
Despite frequently criticizing Misaki for her unfeminine strength and poor fashion sense, Aoi plays a crucial role in prompting her emotional growth. He scolds her for being indecisive about her relationship with Takumi Usui and for unintentionally leading Hinata Shintani on. His words ultimately push Misaki to acknowledge and admit her feelings for Takumi. Though Aoi develops a form of admiration or affection for Misaki, he refrains from confessing, recognizing that her heart belongs to Takumi.
Appearance
Aoi Hyōdō possesses distinctly androgynous features, characterized by large blue eyes framed with long eyelashes and dark purple hair styled in a bowl cut. His appearance is widely regarded as cute, both when presenting as a man and as a woman. When cross-dressing, Aoi wears a curly blonde wig and often dons Satsuki’s old dresses, adopting a feminine and elegant style.
As he grows older, Aoi’s voice begins to deepen, developing a more masculine tone, a change that initially frustrates him. However, with encouragement from Honoka, he gradually learns to embrace fashion in a way that aligns with his identity, transitioning from Lolita-style dresses to more tailored and stylish suits. By chapter 81, Aoi appears to have experienced a growth spurt, reaching approximately 165 cm, making him the same height as Misaki.
Background
Aoi Hyōdō is the son of Satsuki and Nagisa’s older brother. During his childhood, he was trained in beach volleyball by his aunt Nagisa. However, Aoi’s naturally feminine features and preference for dressing in traditionally feminine clothing led to frequent bullying and ridicule at school. As a response to this, he began using his androgynous appearance to toy with men’s feelings while cross-dressing, enjoying the attention and validation it provided.
Despite his success in deceiving many, Takumi Usui remains one of the few men who never falls for Aoi’s charms, having quickly discerned his true gender. This frustrates Aoi, as he is accustomed to manipulating others through his appearance. Over time, Aoi navigates his struggles with self-identity and societal expectations, eventually finding confidence in embracing his love for fashion without relying solely on cross-dressing.
