Aoi Akane (蒼井 茜, Aoi Akane) is a first-year student at Kamome Academy’s High School Division and a classmate of Yashiro Nene. He serves as the Vice President of the Student Council while secretly being a supernatural entity. Akane holds the title of the Guardian of the Present, one of the Three Clock Keepers, alongside Kako, the Guardian of the Past, and Mirai, the Guardian of the Future. As the overseer of the present timeline, he possesses the ability to manipulate the flow of time in the current moment.
Personality

Appearance as Clock Keeper
Akane is deeply infatuated with Aoi, often allowing his feelings for her to cloud his judgment. As her childhood friend, he is highly protective of her and prioritizes her safety above all else. His devotion is so intense that he appears indifferent toward anyone or anything unrelated to Aoi, often displaying a cynical and sarcastic demeanor when interacting with others.
Outside of his unwavering focus on Aoi, Akane is a responsible and diligent student with a strong work ethic. He excels both academically and athletically and serves as the Vice President of the Student Council. His leadership abilities and composed demeanor make him a respected figure within the school.
Despite his calm exterior, Akane harbors a deep resentment toward supernaturals, believing that they lack an understanding of human life’s inherent value. He has openly expressed his desire to continue living as a normal student, even after becoming the Guardian of the Present and one of the Three Clock Keepers. His disdain for supernatural entities is evident in his interactions with Teru Minamoto, to whom he conveys his wish to maintain an ordinary life.
In Chapter 69, Akane reveals that he has always been aware of Aoi’s true motivations and her desire to assist No.6. Though he understands her actions, his feelings for her remain unchanged. He even goes so far as to lie about hating her to conceal his emotions. What he finds most difficult to accept is not her decision to help No.6, but rather her insistence on maintaining a cheerful facade while keeping her true intentions hidden from others.
Appearance
Akane has reddish-brown hair and eyes, with his pupils appearing teal-colored.
As a human, he wears the standard Kamome Academy high school uniform, consisting of a white shirt layered with a vest. Like Teru Minamoto, he sports the red-and-white Student Council armband on his left sleeve, securing it with a safety pin. A distinguishing feature of his everyday appearance is his rectangular glasses, which were enchanted by Teru. He did not wear glasses before enrolling at Kamome Academy and does not use them in his form as a Clock Keeper.
As the Guardian of the Present, Akane’s hairstyle remains mostly unchanged, except for a long, thin ponytail near the nape of his neck, adorned with a bead-like golden ornament. His attire differs significantly from his student uniform, featuring a black, long-sleeved collared shirt, paired with a cream-colored tie, white vest, white pants, and dark-colored shoes. His shirt cuffs are also white, and he wears thin armbands positioned between his elbows and shoulders.
Similar to the other Clock Keepers, Akane dons a long, dark blue cloak with a hood. The interior of the cloak is cream-colored with a pattern of small reddish triangles. It is fastened with a golden braided cord connecting two tassels at the lapels, with a similar braid-and-tassel design on his vest.
Akane’s supernatural form also includes a distinct owl-like mask with an asymmetrical design and a hooked nose, resembling that of Kako. However, he usually removes the mask shortly after transforming. Additionally, he frequently wears white gloves.
As a Clock Keeper, he carries a golden pocket watch with an attached chain and tassel, which he uses to manipulate time. He is also known to wield a bat with crooked nails, often using it to strike others, particularly in matters concerning Aoi.
Beginning in Chapter 64, Akane sustains a large, bloodied hole through his abdomen after being impaled by a giant centipede-like creature. By Chapter 69, Aoi patches the wound by tearing fabric from her kannagi dress, as she does not want to see the injury directly.
Background
Akane and Aoi have been childhood friends since their early years, having attended the same grade school before continuing on to Kamome Academy together. They live in adjacent apartments and frequently spent time studying, playing with toys, and reading books as children. On one occasion, Akane was seen explaining a civil rights book to Aoi, highlighting their close bond from a young age.
Throughout their childhood, Akane primarily played the role of an observer, often witnessing Aoi being picked on by classmates. His protective instincts led him to swear that he would always safeguard her from harm. As they grew older, Aoi became a target for older delinquent children, who cornered her at a local playground. In these moments, Akane always intervened, using his bat to fend off the aggressors.
The two regularly commuted together, walking home along the same neighborhood sidewalk every day. It was on this path that Akane once saw a rare moment of Aoi crying after he had told her he hated her, a scene that left a lasting impression on him.
During Kamome Academy’s middle school orientation, Akane and Aoi were walking home when Mirai, one of the Three Clock Keepers orchestrated a near-fatal accident. Aoi was put in danger by an aging truck with a shattered glass window, threatening her life. Desperate to save her, Akane rushed forward but arrived too late—only to realize that time had suddenly stopped.
In exchange for rewinding time and saving Aoi, Akane agreed to become one of the Clock Keepers. As part of the deal, he received a ticking handheld clock, a significant artifact tied to his role. Later, when Akane was unconscious in his Clock Keeper form, Aoi discovered the pocket watch, unknowingly uncovering his new identity.
Despite his frustration with Aoi’s reserved nature, he remains deeply devoted to her. However, he harbors resentment toward the false persona she presents to others, feeling that her outward cheerfulness is disingenuous. This frustration comes to a head when he momentarily loses control and briefly chokes her, expressing his inner turmoil.
Abilities and Powers
As the Guardian of the Present, Akane possesses the ability to manipulate time, serving as the second of the Three Clock Keepers. He was tricked into a six-year contract on his first day at Kamome Academy, binding him to this role until he graduates. His power is channeled through a pocket watch, which he received upon accepting his position. This watch allows him to stop time, signified by the appearance of a clock face above his target when activated. However, his abilities have several limitations, he can only stop time three times per day, for a maximum of five minutes per use, and his powers are restricted to the school grounds. Despite these constraints, Akane can freeze multiple people or objects simultaneously, as demonstrated when he stopped both a chandelier and Kou at the same time. Additionally, he has the ability to protect individuals from time-reversal effects, preventing them from being affected when Kako, the Guardian of the Past, rewinds time. However, his powers do not work on Mirai, the Guardian of the Future, leaving him unable to influence her temporal control.
Beyond his time-stopping abilities, Akane also exhibits enhanced physical strength, particularly in moments of emotional agitation. While already strong in his human form, his strength increases significantly as a Clock Keeper. He has displayed the ability to crack a wall with a single punch, shatter a teacup simply by squeezing it, and catch Hanako off-guard by grabbing his arm while he was holding a knife. However, despite these enhancements, he cannot match Mirai’s speed, putting him at a disadvantage in confrontations. When transforming into his Clock Keeper form, his attire changes accordingly, as he dons a dark blue cloak with a hood and an owl-like mask, further emphasizing his supernatural nature.
To suppress his supernatural presence, Akane wears a pair of enchanted glasses, created by Teru Minamoto. These glasses allow him to function as a normal human, reducing his spiritual energy and making it possible for him to live an ordinary life. However, the enchantment is not entirely flawless, as he was still able to physically punch Hanako out of Nene’s body, despite wearing them. Additionally, while wearing the glasses, Akane cannot see supernatural beings, making him vulnerable to their influence. This has led him to fall under the effect of the Confession Tree, alongside Lemon, due to his inability to perceive supernatural threats. He was also unable to see the Mokke, even when they were actively attacking him. Furthermore, Teru’s exorcist abilities still work on Akane while he wears the glasses, though it remains unclear if this would be the case without them.
Although the glasses significantly reduce his supernatural presence, they do not completely conceal him from powerful entities. Hanako was able to deduce that the Clock Keeper was in Nene’s class, despite Akane still wearing the glasses at the time.
Legacy
Aoi Akane is one of the most intriguing characters in Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, balancing a carefree school life with his heavy supernatural responsibilities. Though he tries to live normally, his duty as the Guardian of the Present constantly pulls him back into supernatural conflicts. His deep devotion to Aoi, combined with his struggle between human emotions and supernatural duty, makes him one of the most complex and relatable figures in the series.
