Appearance

Anju has the long, silvery-blue hair typical of the Adularia, though she also inherits pale blue eyes from a distant Celesta ancestor. Unfortunately, these eyes mark her as different and contributed to her discrimination as an Eighty-Six. Standing at 170 cm tall, Anju wears the standard scavenged desert camouflage fatigues like the rest of the Spearhead Squadron. Later, she switches to the Federacy’s steel-colored panzer jacket uniform.

Due to her mixed Adularia and Celesta heritage, Anju faced physical abuse in the concentration camps from other Eighty-Six. During a conversation with Kurena in the showers, she reveals a derogatory inscription—”Whore’s daughter”—carved into her back by her abusers. To conceal the scars, she keeps her hair long.

Personality

Anju is typically graceful and modest, but she reveals a ruthlessness on the battlefield that rivals any of her squadron members. Despite her calm exterior, she has a mischievous side, often conspiring with Kaie to tease Kurena about her feelings for Shin.

Anju tends to conceal her emotions, as noted by Shin when she broke down in tears during the fireworks display. She also tries to keep her past traumas hidden, growing her hair long and avoiding revealing her body to the other girls in Spearhead to cover the scars left by her past abuse.

Background

Anju was born on October 2nd, RY 351 / SY 2132, to two Alba Republic citizens in a small eastern city in the Republic of San Magnolia. Following the issuance of the Special Wartime Peace Preservation Act, Anju and her mother were sent to the Eighty-Sixth Sector due to their blue eyes, inherited from a distant ancestor.

In the internment camps, Anju was physically abused by other Eighty-Six. Her Alba heritage made her an easy target for their frustration, and she endured cruel treatment. One of her abusers carved a derogatory inscription into her back, which is why she began growing her hair long to hide the scar.

After enlisting, Anju was placed in a squadron with Daiya Irma. The two formed a close bond over their time together, eventually developing romantic feelings for each other.

After some time, Anju and Daiya joined the Claymore Squadron, alongside Shin, Raiden, Theo, and Kurena. Four years into Anju’s service, they were transferred to the First Ward’s Spearhead Squadron in RY 367.

Abilities

Combat Skill
Anju specializes in area suppression and crowd control. Rather than using the traditional 88mm bore gun of her unit, she opted for a multiple-launch rocket pad, which provides greater area-of-effect power. Anju is particularly skilled at predicting enemy movements and positioning, allowing her to strike with precision and deal maximum damage in a single blow.

    Trivia

    • Anju’s personal name, Snow Witch, is thematically linked to Daiya’s personal name, Black Dog. In European mythology, the black dog is often seen as a familiar to witches. The close bond between Anju and Daiya is reflected in their relationship, which mirrors the connection between a magician and their familiar. This is highlighted by Anju’s reaction to Daiya’s death and the lasting impact it had on her.
    • Her associated flower in the Blu-Ray & DVD Bonus Box Art is the Sweet Pea Flower.
    • Anju’s default expression when angry is to smile widely, which is described as “terrifying.”
    • Anju’s internment number is E165-42744.
