Personality

Andrew is an educated and well-mannered young man who treats others with politeness and restraint. Though reserved and often indifferent, he is capable of genuine kindness and compassion. He deeply respects his father and initially shared his belief that magic is an obsolete practice. However, unlike his father, Andrew admires witches for their passion and dedication.

After meeting Akko, Andrew begins to question his rigid upbringing, quietly rebelling by practicing piano despite his father’s disapproval. This marks his gradual growth toward independence, as he starts forming and expressing beliefs of his own rather than unquestioningly following his family’s views.

Trivia

  • Lucien Dodge(Andrew’s English voice actor) andErica Mendez(Akko’s English voice actress) are together in a relationship in real life.
    • Ironically, according to an interview withYoh Yoshinari,Naoko Tsutsumi, andShūhei Handaduring the talkshow that took place after the screenings for episode 22-25 in TOHO Cinemas in Shinjuku on June 23, 2017, Andrew was originally going to confess his feelings to Akko and the two of them would end up together. However, Yoshinari disliked this because it would have meant that Akko was working for Andrew’s sake and not for herself, so it was ultimately scrapped. Yoshinari instead sees their current relationship as a “sort of playful guy-guy relationship”, which Handa agrees with.[6][7][8].
  • InLittle Witch Academia: Chamber of Time’s 23rd Sub Event,“Andrew in the Rumor Mill”, Diana revealed Akko that, prior to Andrew being confirmed as the heir to the Hanbridge family, he was a normal average child.
  • Andrew is technically the second male major character introduced in the franchise, the first beingYūto MinazukifromTsukiyo no Ōkanmanga.
  • At least in terms of appearance and trademark suit, Andrew inspires the design of the intermediate master level hero, Plastic Superman, one of the minor characters from the 2020 Chinese manhuaCultivator vs Superhero, who first appears inthe 1st chapter of the series.
  • During the talkshow that took place after the screenings for episode 22-25 in TOHO Cinemas in Shinjuku on June 23, 2017,Shūhei Handaelaborated his challenge in drawing Andrew, notably maintaining small highlights in the eyes and keeping him consistently handsome. Nevertheless, such complications didn’t hinder the change of Andrew’s expression over the course of his character development in the series[9].
  • By trying to take a look at witches and magic community as whole in a perspective not marred by prejudice and cynicism thus learning that they still have a future, Andrew plays a crucial role in ensuring the revival of Yggdrasil; had he remained neutral when Nine New Witches intervened in stopping Noir Rod, the government of England would make things harder for them in ending such threat. Not to mention of diffusing the fiasco at Appleton Academy because of both Amanda and Akko infiltrating the school and Croix’s discreet machinations in “Amanda O’Neill and the Holy Grail”, revealing to Akko that Diana has her own share of struggles in two-parter episodes centered around Diana (“Cavendish” and “Intelligence and Sensibility”), and suggesting Akko to make her own approach in becoming an amazing witch like Shiny Chariot in her own way rather than living in her idol’s shadow in “Chariot and Croix”.
