Personality

Amidamaru is a wise, humble, and honorable man who upholds traditional values with a straightforward approach to life. His worldview is deeply influenced by his time as a samurai, where strength and valor were essential for survival in the war-torn era he lived in. Amidamaru’s sense of duty, loyalty, and commitment to justice make him a figure of great moral integrity, even as he grapples with the violent legacy of his past.

Upon meeting Yoh as a ghost, Amidamaru experiences a significant culture shock, as the modern world’s peaceful state contrasts sharply with the chaos of his era. Over time, Yoh’s laid-back and optimistic outlook begins to influence Amidamaru, softening his traditional rigidity and allowing him to adopt a more relaxed perspective. Inspired by Yoh’s ideals, Amidamaru takes on a personal mission to help Yoh protect the peace of their world, determined to prevent a repeat of the strife and suffering that defined his own lifetime.

History

Amidamaru grew up during a tumultuous era when yokai roamed freely in the Living World, causing immense suffering among the people. Orphaned at a young age, he adopted a warrior’s mentality to survive and protect his home, as well as the other orphans who lived alongside him. Despite his harsh circumstances, Amidamaru refused to dishonor the fallen samurai who gave their lives protecting others from the yokai, choosing never to take their swords. Instead, his best friend, Mosuke, who was an aspiring blacksmith, forged a weapon for him. Mosuke poured his very soul into creating his first sword, a blade of unmatched quality. Touched by his friend’s dedication, Amidamaru shed a tear upon receiving the sword, which Mosuke decided to name Harusame (春雨, Spring Rain), symbolizing its purity and their bond.

As adults, Amidamaru and Mosuke were recruited by their Daimyo to join a military force tasked with fighting back against the invading yokai. Unbeknownst to them, they had become part of the first Great Spirit War. The Samurai army, despite their courage and skill, was hopelessly outmatched by the powerful Oni. Amidamaru and Mosuke eventually became the last surviving members of their faction. In their final stand, Amidamaru fought valiantly, cutting down more Oni than any human before him, allowing Mosuke and the Daimyo to escape. Amidamaru’s sacrifice paved the way for the Daimyo to rebuild Japanese society and its infrastructure in the years to come.

After the war, Mosuke returned to the site of Amidamaru’s death, only to discover that Amidamaru’s spirit was beginning to morph into a yokai. The relentless violence and bloodshed Amidamaru had endured had tainted his soul with the malevolent energy emitted by yokai. However, Amidamaru had foreseen this possibility and learned a soul-binding ritual from an early Shaman he encountered during his journey. Fearing that Amidamaru would transform into an uncontrollable yokai, Mosuke used the ritual to seal Amidamaru’s soul within the Harusame. This ensured Amidamaru’s spirit would remain safe from yokai corruption, preserving his honor and legacy for centuries to come.

Powers and Abilities

Amidamaru is celebrated as one of the most exceptional swordsmen in history, earning his place as a legendary samurai and formidable yokai slayer. His unparalleled skills and resilience allowed him to survive the First Great Spirit War, where he became the last samurai standing from his faction. Amidamaru’s mastery of swordsmanship and valor in combat earned him recognition even in the Land of Ogres, where he is revered as one of the few non-shaman warriors capable of challenging the Oni. His ability to cut through powerful yokai with precision and skill is a testament to his strength and determination.

Through his extensive experience in battle, Amidamaru developed a sharp sense of perception and strategy, making him a highly effective combatant. He has an innate ability to assess an opponent’s strength with just a glance and predict their capabilities in combat. This expertise allows him to guide Yoh effectively, offering advice and support in critical situations. Despite not being inherently spiritually sensitive, Amidamaru possesses an extraordinarily powerful soul. His sheer willpower protected his spirit from corruption and enabled him to channel his spiritual energy, or Wavelength, into his swords. This natural ability made his weapons exceptionally potent against yokai, further solidifying his legendary status.

As a shikigami, Amidamaru enhances Yoh’s capabilities through unique abilities such as Soul Merge and Soul Equip. By using the Soul Merge technique, Amidamaru can possess Yoh’s body, granting him agility, balance, and precision akin to that of a seasoned samurai. This allows Yoh to perform Amidamaru’s swordsmanship techniques with skill and efficiency. Amidamaru’s release command, “Rise,” activates the Soul Equip ability, merging his spirit with the Harusame and empowering the blade with his Soul Flame. This fusion enhances Yoh’s cutting power, enabling him to unleash devastating long-ranged vacuum blade attacks by channeling their combined soul energy. Amidamaru’s contributions as a spirit ally are indispensable, elevating Yoh’s strength and cementing their bond as a powerful team in battle.
