Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury)

Ami Mizuno (水野 亜美, Mizuno Ami) is the everyday persona of Sailor Mercury (セーラーマーキュリー, Seeraa Maakyurii), her reincarnation in present-day. As one of the Inner Sailor Guardians, she was the second to join the team after being recruited by Luna in the 1990s anime series.

I am the Pretty Guardian who fights for love and intelligence! I am Sailor Mercury! Douse yourself in water, and repent!
— Sailor Mercury

Appearance

Civilian Form
Ami Mizuno is a teenage girl with short, dark blue hair that frames her neck and matches her blue eyes. She occasionally wears reading glasses, adding to her studious look.

Her school attire consists of the standard uniform of Juban Public Middle School, and during summer, she switches to a seasonal version of it. Ami’s primary casual look includes a pink long-sleeved sweater jacket, layered over a white button-up shirt with a dark blue ribbon at the collar. She pairs this with a cream-yellow skirt, white socks, and black shoes.

In Sailor Stars, she joins Usagi, Minako, and Makoto in wearing the Juban High School uniform.

Sailor Mercury Form
As Sailor Mercury, Ami retains her civilian features with a few key transformations. She wears a golden tiara adorned with a blue gem, and her overall Sailor uniform is various shades of blue. Her outfit includes a blue sailor collar with two white stripes, a matching blue skirt, and knee-length blue boots. Her bows—front and back—are light blue, with a blue brooch centered on the front bow. Additionally, she wears blue stud earrings in both ears. When using her computer skills, she also dons blue goggles for enhanced focus.

Super Sailor Mercury Form
In her Super Sailor form, Sailor Mercury’s look evolves: her choker now features a yellow star, and a large blue heart appears on her front bow. Her shoulder pads are accented with short, translucent sleeves, and she adds two extra blue studs on her left ear. Her back bow is enlarged and lengthened for a more dynamic appearance.

Personality

Before forming close friendships with Usagi and the other Sailor Senshi, Ami was a reserved and introverted girl, often keeping to herself with books and studies. Her academic success, always scoring at the top of national exams, made some classmates see her as distant or even arrogant. However, her friendship with Usagi helped shift those perceptions, revealing her true nature.

Ami is inherently kind, gentle, and supportive, though she struggles with slight insecurity. Initially, she is sensitive to the opinions of her mother, classmates, and teachers, but over time she grows more self-assured. As the series progresses, Ami takes on the role of strategist for the Sailor Senshi, using her analytical mind to anticipate and respond to the enemy’s moves. Known for her sensible and calm demeanor, she often mediates during conflicts, especially when tensions arise between Usagi and Rei.

Ami’s family life has its challenges, as her parents are divorced, and she lives with her mother, a dedicated doctor. With her mother often away for work, Ami learns to manage on her own, aspiring to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a doctor herself.

Her academic strengths lie in math and science, though she secretly enjoys romance novels and pop culture—a passion she keeps mostly to herself out of embarrassment.

Information

Ami Mizuno, an only child, was raised by her mother, Saeko, a highly respected doctor, following her parents’ divorce. Her father, a painter, pursued a freelance career, while Ami remained under her mother’s care, living in a condominium. Inspired by her mother’s dedication, Ami aspired to become a doctor herself, developing into a highly intelligent student. However, her shyness and academic excellence often led her classmates to misinterpret her as aloof or conceited, resulting in a somewhat lonely life.

Sailor Moon

Ami’s introduction in the anime comes in Episode 8, where Luna, suspecting her of being an enemy due to her unique aura, follows her. In school, Ami is known for her top-ranking scores in national exams, which makes some classmates envious. When Usagi befriends her at the arcade, she discovers Ami’s impressive skills as she breaks the record in the Sailor V game. Later, after Ami drops a “Crystal Disk” given to her for studies, Luna and Usagi investigate it, revealing its brainwashing properties. When a Youma named Garoben attacks Ami, Luna realizes Ami’s energy stems from her identity as Sailor Mercury. Using her transformation pen, Ami transforms into Sailor Mercury, joining Sailor Moon in battle and using her Shabon Spray attack to help defeat Garoben. From then on, Ami fights alongside the other Sailor Guardians.

During her missions as Sailor Mercury, Ami forms a bond with Ryo Urama, who first catches her attention by surpassing her in a school exam through his psychic powers. Though he was linked to the Seven Great Youma, Ami protects him as Sailor Mercury, and they spend time together after the Dark Kingdom is defeated. Ami is the second Guardian to fall to the DD Girls, sacrificing herself to help the team.

Sailor Moon R (Makai Tree Arc)

In the Makai Tree arc, while the anime creators waited for the next manga arc, Ami and the others audition for a movie, only to be interrupted by the Cardian Minotauron, summoned by Ail. Their memories are restored by Luna, and the girls transform, with Sailor Mercury using her Shabon Spray mist to shield Sailor Moon. Later, she displays her full strength in battle, especially when protecting the innocent from harm.

Sailor Moon R (Black Moon Arc)

In the Black Moon arc, Ami contemplates leaving for Germany to study medicine, but her commitment to her friends and their safety keeps her grounded. She faces Berthier, her rival among the Spectre Sisters, who manipulates dark water. Ami’s intelligence and compassion lead her to participate in a chess tournament where she confronts Berthier. Ultimately, with Tuxedo Mask’s intervention, she rescues Berthier, convincing her to change. Ami plays a crucial role throughout the arc, lending her power to Chibiusa in the final showdown against Wiseman, and proving her loyalty to Sailor Moon and the Senshi.

Sailor Moon S

In Sailor Moon S, Ami often leads the others in study sessions. In Episode 97, she competes with Michiru in swimming and becomes the third victim of the Daimons, who target her Pure Heart crystal. Throughout the series, she continues to support Sailor Moon against the Death Busters. In the pivotal battle with Pharaoh 90, Ami joins the other Senshi in creating a defensive barrier to help Super Sailor Moon confront the powerful entity.

Sailor Moon SuperS

Ami continues her studies and helps Usagi and the others during their battles. She remains focused on her goal of becoming a doctor but never hesitates to support her friends and protect the world as Sailor Mercury.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars

In this final season, Ami dedicates herself to defending her friends alongside the other Guardians. Her interactions with the Sailor Starlights, particularly Taiki, stand out. Although initially aligned with Taiki’s belief in science over personal bonds, Ami’s perspective eventually influences him, showcasing one of her most powerful moments of connection and insight.

Etymology

  • Ami (亜美) combines the kanji “A” (亜), which can mean “Asia,” “rank next,” or “come after,” with “mi” (美), meaning “beauty.” Her first name could translate to “Asian Beauty” or “Second Beauty,” a nod to her being the second Sailor Guardian to join the team.
  • Mizuno (水野) breaks down into “Mizu” (水), meaning “water,” and “no” (野), which can translate to “plains,” “field,” “rustic,” or “civilian life.” Additionally, “no” (の) serves as a possessive particle in Japanese, so her surname could mean “of the water,” “water field,” or “water plains.”

When combined, Ami Mizuno can be interpreted as “Second Beauty of the Water,” reflecting her elemental connection and her role within the Sailor Guardians.
