Altair

Altair (アルタイル, Arutairu), also known as the Military Uniform Princess, is the primary antagonist of Re:Creators. She is the secondary and penultimate creation of Setsuna Shimazaki, inspired by Shirotsumekusa (シロツメクサ) from the social game Eternal Wars Megalosphere (悠久大戦メガロスフィア, Yūkyū Taisen Megarosufia). However, Altair was not born from a traditional story—she first appeared in an online music video titled Altair: World Étude, making her an independent existence without a defined narrative.

As the driving force behind the conflict in Re:Creators, Altair is responsible for summoning the “Created” characters into the real world. Her ultimate goal is to erase reality itself, bringing about total oblivion by collapsing the rationality of the real world through battle and destruction. Fueled by hatred, grief, and loss, she seeks revenge against the world that abandoned her creator, Setsuna Shimazaki, whose tragic death solidified Altair’s unwavering resolve to destroy everything.

Background

https://everipedia.io/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/shibuya.jpg

Appearance in anime

Altair was originally a fan creation, designed by Setsuna Shimazaki as an alternate version of Shirotsumekusa, a character from Eternal Wars Megalosphere. However, instead of existing within an official story, Altair gained popularity through online content, particularly music videos, fan edits, and various reinterpretations. Her infinite potential was fueled by the creativity of the internet, allowing her to become a limitless being without narrative constraints.

Tragically, Setsuna was bullied and ostracized by the online community, leading her to commit suicide before she could develop Altair into a full-fledged character. Devastated by her creator’s untimely death, Altair developed an intense hatred toward the real world, blaming it for Setsuna’s suffering. This fueled her desire for revenge, leading her to manipulate reality itself by bringing fictional characters into existence and orchestrating a collision between reality and fiction.

Unlike the other “Created” characters, who are bound by the rules of their original worlds, Altair is a unique anomaly because she was created through collective interpretation and viral popularity, her powers are limitless, as long as they are accepted by her audience. This makes her the most dangerous force in the series, capable of rewriting reality and defying logic with no restrictions.

Appearance

Altair is a tall, ethereal woman with long silver-white hair, deep red eyes, and an ornate military-style uniform adorned with gold embroidery, intricate braiding, and epaulettes. Her elegant yet imposing presence reflects both her regal status and her role as an unstoppable force.

She carries a massive, intricately designed musket, which she wields with grace and absolute control. The weapon is both symbolic and functional, representing her connection to warfare, destruction, and rebellion.

Altair’s flowing cape and confident posture make her appear like a tragic yet commanding figure, further emphasizing her role as both a vengeful deity and a sorrowful embodiment of loss.

Personality

Altair is cold, calculating, and deeply vengeful, driven by an all-consuming hatred toward the real world. She views existence itself as meaningless, believing that if reality caused Setsuna’s suffering, then reality must be erased. Her calm and composed demeanor makes her even more terrifying, as she rarely displays emotion beyond quiet determination and mild amusement.

Despite her godlike abilities, Altair is not a mindless force of destruction she is intelligent, manipulative, and highly strategic, carefully planning her assault on reality by gathering powerful “Created” characters to her side. She exploits their pain and desires, promising them a world where they are free from their creators’ control, all while using them to further her ultimate goal of annihilation.

However, beneath her merciless exterior, Altair harbors a deep sadness her actions are not born out of pure evil, but rather out of grief and longing. She genuinely loved her creator, and everything she does is, in her mind, a tribute to Setsuna. This makes her one of the most tragic antagonists in anime, as her destruction is fueled by love, loss, and the pain of being abandoned.

Role in the Story

  • Summoning the “Created” Characters
Altair is responsible for bringing fictional characters into the real world, manipulating them into fighting against their creators under the promise of freedom from their predetermined fates. However, her true goal is to use their conflict to shatter the barrier between reality and fiction, leading to the destruction of the real world itself.

  • Manipulating the War
Throughout the series, Altair remains several steps ahead of her enemies, using psychological manipulation and brute force to ensure her victory. She allows the “Created” characters to believe they have agency, while in reality, they are pawns in her grand scheme.

  • Final Confrontation and Resolution
As the final battle reaches its peak, Altair faces a critical moment of introspection when she is confronted with Setsuna’s memory. Instead of being defeated by brute force, Altair is ultimately overcome by the realization that her actions will not bring Setsuna back. This leads her to rewrite herself out of existence, choosing to join Setsuna in oblivion rather than continue her destructive rampage. Her departure from the world is poetic, as she embraces the one thing she fought against—acceptance of her creator’s fate.

Relationships

Setsuna Shimazaki (Her Creator)
Setsuna is the most important person in Altair’s existence. Everything Altair does is for Setsuna, believing that erasing reality is the only way to avenge her suffering. Her love for her creator is what makes her both powerful and tragic.

Sōta Mizushino
Sōta represents the world Altair hates, yet he also understands Setsuna’s pain. His final confrontation with Altair plays a crucial role in her resolution, as he offers her a different way to honor Setsuna’s memory.

Trivia

    • Her name, “Altair,” comes from the brightest star in the Aquila constellation, symbolizing her significance.
      • She is based on the fan-made reinterpretation of another character, making her the only “Created” without an official story.
      • Her Holopsicon ability makes her arguably one of the most overpowered anime antagonists ever.

    Legacy

      • Altair is one of Re:Creators’ most iconic and tragic antagonists, representing the boundless power of creation and the emotional impact of storytelling. Her journey from destruction to self-realization makes her one of anime’s most complex villains, proving that even a character without a story can shape the fate of an entire world.
