Akira Renbokoji

Akira Renbokoji (連坊小路 アキラ, Renbōkouji Akira), is a major supporting character in the anime and manga series Valvrave the Liberator. As the sibling of Satomi Renbokoji, Akira initially lives in a makeshift cardboard dwelling within the academy. She is highly intelligent and possesses exceptional hacking skills, which she uses to gather and disseminate information. Akira becomes involved in the larger events of the series when she uses her hacking abilities to spread video footage of Haruto Tokishima’s actions against the Dorssian forces to the wider world, playing a crucial role in exposing the truth.

Akira starts off as a reserved and apprehensive individual, often reluctant to interact with others. However, her character gradually opens up over the course of the series, with Shoko Sashinami being the first person outside of her family with whom she truly communicates. Beyond her technical expertise, Akira also becomes the pilot of the RM-069 Valvrave VI Hiasobi, further establishing her importance to the story.

Appearance in Anime

Akira Renbokoji’s early life is marked by her reclusive nature and a strong focus on technology and hacking. She resides in a modest and humble environment, living in a cardboard dwelling at the academy, which reflects her frugality and resourcefulness. Despite the lack of luxuries, Akira’s life is centered around her passion for hacking and her familial bond with her sibling, Satomi.

Her hacking skills are exceptional, and she is able to manipulate Wired technology with great proficiency. This ability becomes central to her involvement in the larger political and military conflicts that unfold in Valvrave the Liberator. Akira’s early hesitance to interact with others stems from her introverted personality, but over time, her character becomes more connected with the rest of the main cast, particularly as she takes on the responsibility of piloting a Valvrave.

Appearance

Akira has a youthful, slender build, and her appearance reflects her more introverted nature. She has dark hair, which she typically keeps short and somewhat messy, adding to her unassuming and utilitarian appearance. Akira’s eyes are sharp and observant, reflecting her intellect and her tendency to analyze situations from a technical perspective. Her attire is typically simple and functional, often consisting of clothing suitable for her hacking work and her time spent in the academy.

As the pilot of the RM-069 Valvrave VI Hiasobi, Akira’s overall appearance changes when she dons the pilot suit, where she takes on a more heroic and battle-ready look, though her personality remains more reserved. Her transformation from a quiet, isolated figure to an active participant in the battle for freedom marks a significant aspect of her character’s journey.

Personality

Akira Renbokoji is initially characterized by her introversion, shyness, and reluctance to engage with others. She is a brilliant hacker with an intense focus on her work, often preferring to immerse herself in her technical skills rather than socialize. This makes her an enigmatic and somewhat distant character, especially at the beginning of the series.

However, as the series progresses, Akira begins to open up, showing a more vulnerable side to her character. Shoko Sashinami becomes a key figure in her emotional growth, as Akira forms a bond with her and begins to trust people outside of her family. Akira’s willingness to take on the role of the Valvrave VI Hiasobi’s pilot marks a significant change in her character, as she steps out of her comfort zone and becomes an active player in the war.

Akira’s loyalty to her friends and her desire to protect others become driving forces in her development. Her personal growth involves finding a balance between her technical prowess and her emotional capacity to connect with others, ultimately making her a more rounded character.

Role in the Story

Hacker in the Shadows: At the onset of the conflict, Akira plays a vital role by broadcasting Haruto’s fight against the Dorssian forces, helping spread awareness of the Valvrave pilots. Her technical expertise keeps the student resistance informed and connected, even if she remains hidden.

Gradual Integration: Through persistent efforts by Shoko Sashinami, Akira begins to leave her cardboard shelter and participate in limited social interactions. Her early steps out of isolation are marked by fear and awkwardness, but also moments of bravery.

Pilot of Valvrave VI: Akira’s turning point comes when she volunteers to pilot Valvrave VI. The mecha, named Hiasobi, reflects her inner creativity and curiosity. Despite her lack of formal training, Akira displays incredible adaptability, proving instrumental in key battles. Her piloting symbolizes her reclaiming control over her life and stepping out of the shadows.

Relationships

Shoko Sashinami: Shoko is the first person outside of Akira’s family to earn her trust. Their relationship is a symbol of healing and acceptance, with Shoko’s warmth and persistence helping Akira rediscover human connection. Akira even risks her life in battle to protect her.

Satomi Renbokoji: Akira’s older brother and president of the student council. Their relationship is strained due to Satomi’s overprotectiveness and Akira’s need for independence. However, they share deep familial concern for one another, and Satomi’s support becomes more meaningful as Akira begins piloting a Valvrave.

Haruto Tokishima & The Valvrave Pilots: Initially distant from the main pilot team, Akira later becomes an indispensable ally and trusted comrade. Her teamwork improves drastically, and she comes to care deeply about the group’s survival.
