Akira Fudo

Akira Fudō (不動明, Fudō Akira), is the main protagonist of Devilman Crybaby, a modern adaptation of the Devilman franchise by Go Nagai. Originally an ordinary, kind-hearted teenager, Akira undergoes a dramatic transformation after merging with the powerful demon Amon during a demonic ritual orchestrated by his best friend, Ryo Asuka. Retaining his human conscience but gaining demonic strength, Akira becomes Devilman, a being who fights against both demons and humans consumed by hatred.

As the series progresses, Akira is caught in an increasingly tragic struggle, balancing his human emotions and demonic instincts while trying to protect the people he loves from a world spiraling into chaos. His journey explores themes of identity, morality, love, and the nature of good and evil.

Background

Appearance in anime

Before becoming Devilman, Akira was a timid and overly compassionate boy, often crying when witnessing the pain of others. He lived an ordinary life with his parents and was childhood friends with Ryo Asuka, who he deeply admired. Unlike Ryo, who was more intellectual and manipulative, Akira was more emotional, often following Ryo’s lead.

His life takes a drastic turn when Ryo brings him to a Sabbath, a violent demonic gathering where humans are possessed by demons. To save Akira from being killed, Ryo forces him to merge with Amon, a powerful demon. However, instead of losing his humanity, Akira overpowers Amon’s will, maintaining his human mind while gaining superhuman abilities.

Following his transformation, Akira is no longer physically or emotionally the same. While he retains his kind-hearted nature, he also struggles with his new demonic urges and the violent world he has been thrown into.

Appearance

Satoshi has a slim build and stands at an average height. He has short, wavy brown hair and light brown eyes, giving him a warm and approachable look. His expressions are animated, often reflecting his cheerful personality.

At school, he wears the Kamiyama High School uniform, consisting of a white dress shirt, dark slacks, and a blazer. Outside of school, he opts for casual clothing, including hoodies, sweaters, and T-shirts. He is frequently seen carrying a bag, where he keeps his smartphone and digital camera, highlighting his interest in gadgets and information gathering.

Personality

Satoshi is outgoing, cheerful, and playful, often acting as the mood-maker of the Classic Literature Club. He enjoys teasing his friends and engaging in lighthearted banter, particularly with Oreki. He takes pride in his strong memory and broad knowledge, referring to himself as a “database” capable of recalling extensive facts. However, he acknowledges his limitations, admitting that he cannot draw conclusions the way Oreki can.

While he appears confident and carefree, Satoshi harbors insecurities regarding his own abilities. He avoids serious competition, believing that striving for excellence would only lead to disappointment or failure. This internal conflict is especially evident in his interactions with Oreki, whom he both respects and resents for possessing the critical thinking skills he lacks.

Satoshi also has a fear of commitment, particularly in his relationship with Mayaka Ibara. Though he is aware of her feelings for him, he remains hesitant to reciprocate fully, fearing the emotional weight of a romantic relationship.

Role in the Story

  • The Birth of Devilman
Akira Fudō begins as an ordinary teenager until he is drawn into a world of demons by Ryo Asuka, his enigmatic childhood friend. Ryo takes Akira to a Sabbath ritual, a hedonistic and violent gathering where demons possess humans. In the ensuing chaos, Akira is merged with Amon, a powerful demon, but retains his human consciousness. This transformation grants him superhuman strength, speed, and demonic abilities, but most importantly, it allows him to fight demons while keeping his empathetic heart. Now as Devilman, Akira embarks on a journey to protect humanity from demons, even as he struggles with his own monstrous instincts. He embraces his new identity, balancing his compassion with his growing power, and begins fighting the hidden demonic threats that lurk in society.

  • The War Against Demons and Society
As Akira grows stronger, he realizes that demons are not the only enemy—fear and paranoia are just as dangerous. While he fights against monstrous creatures that prey on humans, society itself begins to crumble under the growing hysteria. Demons infiltrate human civilization, manipulating the weaknesses of human nature, leading to chaos and division. His deepening bond with Miki Makimura serves as a beacon of hope, reminding him of the humanity he desperately clings to. However, his relationship with Ryo Asuka becomes increasingly strained as Akira begins to question Ryo’s true motives. Unbeknownst to Akira, Ryo is hiding a world-shattering secret that will change everything. As society collapses, Akira’s once heroic efforts are twisted against him. Humans turn on each other, believing that anyone could be a demon in disguise. Even Akira, despite his attempts to save people, is labeled as a monster. As his battles intensify, he is forced to face betrayal, loss, and unimaginable grief, leading him down a tragic path.

  • The Final Battle Against Satan
In the climax of the story, Akira finally learns the horrifying truth Ryo Asuka is actually Satan. Ryo orchestrated everything from the beginning, using Akira to test humanity’s worthiness. Believing that humans were inherently cruel and unworthy of existence, Ryo triggered the war between demons and humans as an experiment to see if there was any hope left in mankind. Devastated by the betrayal and fueled by righteous fury, Akira leads the remaining Devilmen into battle against Satan’s forces. Despite his incredible strength, the war is unwinnable. One by one, Akira’s allies fall, leaving him to stand alone against Satan. In their final confrontation, Akira fights with everything he has, but ultimately, he is defeated and killed. In the aftermath, Ryo sits beside Akira’s lifeless body, realizing too late that Akira was the only person who truly loved and understood him. With the world reduced to ruins and Akira gone, Ryo is left utterly alone, marking the tragic end of Devilman’s fight.

Relationships

Ryo Asuka
Akira’s best friend and ultimate nemesis. Initially, he trusts Ryo deeply, but their relationship fractures as Ryo’s true identity as Satan is revealed. Their brotherly bond turns into one of heartbreaking betrayal and conflict.

Miki Makimura
The person Akira loves most and his moral center. She represents his humanity, and her tragic fate is a turning point in his story.

Miki “Miko” Kuroda
Initially resentful of Miki and jealous of Akira’s strength, she later grows to admire him, realizing his struggle.

The Demon Amon
The ferocious demon Akira merges with. While Akira maintains control, Amon’s primal instincts remain within him, influencing his fighting style and moments of rage.
