Akihiro Altland

Akihiro Altland (昭弘・アルトランド, Akihiro Arutorando), is a major supporting character in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans. A former Human Debris a term for enslaved child soldiers Akihiro was initially the leader of CGS’s Human Debris unit before joining Tekkadan, where he serves as a loyal and battle hardened Mobile Suit pilot.

Throughout the series, he struggles with the trauma of his past, his identity as a Human Debris, and the loss of his loved ones, but ultimately becomes one of Tekkadan’s strongest and most steadfast warriors.

Background

Appearance in anime

Akihiro was born into poverty and later sold as Human Debris, essentially making him a disposable laborer and soldier. He was separated from his younger brother, Masahiro, and was forced to fight in brutal conflicts, leading to his hardened and pragmatic nature.

Before the events of the series, he was part of Chryse Guard Security (CGS) as the leader of their Human Debris unit, serving as a foot soldier with little agency over his own life. However, his fate changes when Orga Itsuka and Mikazuki Augus overthrow CGS, forming Tekkadan. Akihiro is given a chance at true freedom, and he soon becomes one of Orga’s most loyal and skilled warriors.

Despite gaining independence, Akihiro continues to struggle with survivor’s guilt, especially after tragic reunions with those from his past, such as his long-lost brother, Masahiro. His arc is one of self-discovery, redemption, and the fight to create a world where no one has to suffer the way he did.

Appearance

Akihiro is a tall, muscular young man with tan skin, dark eyes, and spiky black hair. His strong physique reflects his extensive combat experience and harsh upbringing as a Human Debris soldier.

Unlike many other characters, Akihiro rarely wears formal or elaborate clothing, often seen in Tekkadan’s standard uniform or combat gear, further reinforcing his practical and no-nonsense nature.

Personality

Akihiro is a stoic, serious, and pragmatic individual, shaped by the harsh realities of his past. He rarely displays emotion, often keeping his feelings buried beneath his tough exterior. Despite this, he is fiercely loyal, compassionate, and protective of those he considers family, especially his comrades in Tekkadan.

While initially detached and resigned to his fate, Akihiro gradually embraces the idea of fighting for a future worth living for. His bond with Tekkadan gives him a sense of purpose, and he fights not just for himself, but for the dream of a better world.

However, he remains haunted by his past, particularly his failure to protect those he cared about, making him one of the most tragic yet compelling characters in the series.

Role in the Story

  • Joining Tekkadan
At the start of the series, Akihiro is just another disposable soldier, but after Orga takes control of CGS and forms Tekkadan, he is given the chance to fight as an equal rather than a slave. Recognizing Orga’s leadership and the strength of his vision, Akihiro pledges loyalty to Tekkadan, becoming one of its most dependable fighters.

  • Reunion with Masahiro
Akihiro’s most heart-wrenching moment comes when he is reunited with his younger brother, Masahiro, whom he had lost years earlier. However, Masahiro is still enslaved and fighting for a group called the Brewers. Tragically, Masahiro chooses to sacrifice himself to protect Akihiro, leaving his older brother devastated and fueling his desire to eradicate the Human Debris system. This event hardens Akihiro’s resolve and solidifies his transformation into a true warrior.

  • The McGillis Fareed Incident
As Tekkadan becomes embroiled in McGillis Fareed’s rebellion against Gjallarhorn, Akihiro continues to prove himself as one of their strongest pilots. He pilots the Gundam Gusion Rebake Full City, displaying exceptional combat skills and unwavering loyalty to Orga and Tekkadan.

  • Final Battle and Legacy
During the final battle against Gjallarhorn’s forces, Akihiro refuses to retreat, choosing to fight until the very end. Despite being gravely injured, he manages to take down countless enemies, ultimately dying as a true warrior, fighting for the only family he ever had. Though his story ends in tragedy, Akihiro’s strength and loyalty leave a lasting impact, and he is remembered as one of Tekkadan’s bravest fighters.

Relationships

Orga Itsuka
Orga is Akihiro’s commander and closest ally. Akihiro deeply respects Orga’s vision and is one of the most loyal members of Tekkadan, willing to fight and die for the family that Orga created.

Mikazuki Augus
Akihiro and Mikazuki share a strong bond as warriors, often fighting side by side in battle. Though Mikazuki is more emotionally detached, Akihiro respects his strength and unwavering loyalty.

Masahiro Altland
Akihiro’s younger brother, Masahiro, represents his greatest regret and tragedy. Their brief reunion and Masahiro’s death are pivotal moments in Akihiro’s character development, solidifying his resolve to fight against the exploitation of child soldiers.

Lafter Frankland
Lafter, a member of the Turbines, develops feelings for Akihiro, and though he is initially oblivious, he eventually starts warming up to her affection. However, before anything can happen, Lafter is assassinated, leaving Akihiro once again mourning someone he cared about.
