Aki Adagaki

Aki Adagaki (安達垣 愛姫, Adagaki Aki), is the main female protagonist of the manga and anime series Masamune-kun no Revenge. A wealthy and prideful high school student, Aki is known throughout her school as the “Cruel Princess” for her habit of harshly rejecting any boy who confesses to her. Her cold demeanor and fierce personality hide a more complex emotional history, particularly involving her relationship with the story’s main male protagonist, Masamune Makabe.

Unbeknownst to Aki, she is the target of Masamune’s elaborate plan for revenge, stemming from a childhood incident in which she gave him the humiliating nickname “Pig’s Foot.” As Masamune attempts to make her fall in love with him to break her heart, Aki’s own vulnerabilities begin to surface, challenging both characters’ perceptions of love and identity.

Appearance in Anime

Aki is the only daughter of a prestigious and wealthy family, raised with high expectations and strict discipline. Despite her affluence, Aki’s upbringing was emotionally distant, leaving her with a hardened personality and a sharp tongue. Her reputation as the “Cruel Princess” stems from her tendency to brutally reject boys who pursue her often humiliating them in public.

In the past, Aki formed a close bond with a boy named Masamune, but their friendship ended abruptly when she seemingly rejected him cruelly. This event left a lasting impact on Masamune, who reenters her life years later with a transformed appearance and a mission to make her fall in love with him so he can enact revenge.

Unaware of Masamune’s true identity and motives, Aki finds herself caught between old feelings and new emotional confusion as their relationship evolves.

Appearance

Aki is a beautiful teenage girl with a slender build, long dark blue hair, and sharp navy blue eyes. She typically wears her school uniform neatly, giving her an elegant and composed appearance that reflects her status. Outside of school, she dresses in refined, modest fashion befitting her upper-class background.

Her expressions often range from stern and icy to subtly vulnerable, especially during moments when her emotional walls begin to crack.

Personality

Aki is known for her cold, haughty, and prideful personality. She rarely shows vulnerability and often lashes out to protect herself emotionally. Her moniker, the “Cruel Princess,” is well-earned due to her harsh treatment of boys and her public humiliation tactics.

However, Aki is not as heartless as she appears. Beneath her sharp exterior lies a girl who is lonely, emotionally guarded, and struggling to understand her own feelings. She has a soft side that occasionally peeks through, particularly when she’s caught off guard or when dealing with close friends and family.

As the story progresses, Aki becomes more introspective, gradually revealing her desire for genuine connection and her confusion over her growing feelings for Masamune.

Role in the Story

The Target of Revenge: Aki becomes the central focus of Masamune Makabe’s revenge plan, though she is unaware of his true identity or motive. As Masamune plays the role of the perfect gentleman, Aki’s reactions range from disdain to reluctant interest. Their constant back-and-forth becomes the emotional core of the story.

Reawakening of Past Feelings: Throughout the series, Aki finds herself confused by her emotional responses to Masamune’s presence, even while maintaining her proud persona. Memories of their childhood interactions resurface, and she begins to question whether she truly knew the boy she once rejected and if her feelings were misunderstood.

Emotional Growth: As Masamune’s plan unfolds, Aki undergoes significant emotional development, learning to trust, open up, and confront her past actions. Her journey challenges her to reconcile her pride with her desire for real connection and forces her to face the truth about both Masamune and herself.

Relationships

Masamune Makabe: The protagonist of the story and the boy she once rejected in childhood. Aki initially regards him with suspicion, but gradually develops conflicted romantic feelings toward him. Their evolving relationship is filled with misunderstandings, emotional tension, and growth.

Yoshino Koiwai: Aki’s loyal maid and confidante. Yoshino plays a complex role in the story, often manipulating events behind the scenes. Though Aki trusts her deeply, their relationship becomes more complicated as truths are revealed.

Kanetsugu Gasou: A suitor falsely posing as Aki’s childhood crush. His presence stirs jealousy in Masamune and contributes to the story’s romantic tension.

Trivia

    • Aki’s favorite food is high-calorie snacks, particularly rice and sweets, despite her elegant appearance.
      • She carries a “rejection diary” where she writes humiliating notes about boys who confess to her.
      • Her nickname, “Cruel Princess,” is feared by male students, but secretly she’s more naive and emotionally awkward than she lets on.
      • Aki struggles to express affection, often defaulting to insults or coldness even when she’s flustered.
      • Her emotional turning points are often triggered by nostalgia or moments of unexpected kindness.

    Legacy

      • Aki Adagaki stands out as a layered and evolving heroine in the romantic comedy genre. Her initial role as the proud, unapproachable beauty is slowly peeled back to reveal a character rich in insecurity, misunderstood emotion, and growth. Her journey challenges the assumptions of both the audience and Masamune, subverting the typical tsundere trope with more depth and vulnerability.
        • Aki’s role as both target and partner in Masamune’s revenge plot gives her character weight, making her more than a simple obstacle she is a mirror of the protagonist’s inner conflict and a person with regrets and hopes of her own. Ultimately, her story is one of redemption, self-awareness, and opening up to love, securing her place as one of the more compelling leads in modern rom-com anime.
