Appearance
Akari is a young woman with chin-length dark brown hair, featuring small curls framing her face and square-cut bangs that cover her eyebrows. Like other residents of Shioshishio, she has distinct ocean-blue eyes, a trait she shares with her brother Hikari Sakishima, as well as Manaka Mukaido, Chisaki Hiradaira, Kaname Isaki, and Miori Shiodome. A notable feature is the small beauty mark under her right eye. Her usual attire consists of a light pink top, short light-blue denim jeans, and light blue and white shoes, reflecting her cheerful and casual style.
Following the time skip, Akari’s hair has grown longer and is typically tied back in a small ponytail. Her clothing matures along with her character, as she is often seen wearing a dark pink sweater, long dark blue jeans, and light brown shoes. She also wears a seashell necklace, a handmade gift from Miuna Shiodome, symbolizing her bond with her stepdaughter and her life on the surface.
Personality
Akari is portrayed as a kind-hearted, cheerful, and nurturing individual. Her warm and empathetic nature allows her to connect easily with others, and she often acts as a source of emotional support for those around her. Following the death of her mother, Hokage Sakishima, Akari takes on a more mature role within her family, demonstrating increased responsibility and emotional resilience.
As the older sister of Hikari Sakishima, she plays a supportive and encouraging role in his life, often guiding him with gentle teasing particularly about his feelings for Manaka Mukaido. Despite the challenges she faces in bridging the gap between the sea and the surface, Akari remains steadfast in her beliefs and displays a strong sense of independence and compassion throughout the series.
History
As a child, Akari aspired to become a manga artist and dreamed of attending school on the surface to pursue that goal. However, the death of her mother, Hokage Sakishima, marked a turning point in her life. Despite her young age, Akari took on a more mature role within the family, suppressing her grief in an effort to support her younger brother, Hikari Sakishima.
To help provide for their household and to ensure Hikari would have the opportunity to attend college, Akari began working at Saya Mart, a convenience store on the surface. Her responsibilities and sacrifices reflect her growth into a dependable and selfless figure within the story.
Relationships
Itaru Shiodome
Akari was once close friends with Miori Shiodome, Itaru Shiodome’s first wife, who had left the sea to live on the surface and later gave birth to Miuna Shiodome. Following Miori’s passing, Akari began supporting Itaru and Miuna during their time of loss. Over time, Akari and Itaru developed a romantic relationship, eventually leading to their marriage. Upon marrying him, Akari adopted the surname Shiodome, becoming Miuna’s stepmother. The couple later had a child together, Akira Shiodome.
Etymology
The name Akari (あかり), written in hiragana, commonly means “light” or “brightness.” When rendered in kanji, it can carry various meanings depending on the characters used. For example, 明里 combines “bright, light, clear” (明) with “village” (里), while 朱里 uses “vermilion red” (朱) and “village” (里), and 朱莉 pairs “vermilion red” (朱) with “white jasmine” (莉). Her maiden surname, Sakishima (先島), consists of the characters “before, ahead, future, precedence” (先) and “island” (島), suggesting a meaning along the lines of “preceding island” or “island ahead.” After her marriage, her surname changes to Shiodome (潮留), which combines “tide, ebb, opportunity” (潮) with “detain, fasten, halt, stop” (留), resulting in a literal meaning of “halt the tides.”
