Akane Aoi

Akane Aoi (赤根 葵) is a first-year student at Kamome Academy’s High School Division and the best friend of Yashiro Nene. She is known for her cheerful and popular personality, often serving as a central figure in school social circles. Initially, Aoi plays a key role in the story by introducing Nene to the supernatural rumors circulating within Kamome Academy, which ultimately leads to Nene’s encounter with Hanako and the mysteries of the school.

Appearance in Anime

Aoi is a sweet and cheerful individual who shares a close friendship with Yashiro Nene. Although she claims to dislike scary stories, she actively engages with them to cheer Nene up, knowing that her best friend enjoys them. Given her enthusiastic storytelling and continued curiosity about supernatural rumors, it is suggested that Aoi may have an interest in them herself, despite her claims otherwise. She is also a romantic at heart, eagerly supporting Nene’s romantic pursuits and enjoying discussions about crushes. However, despite rejecting his advances multiple times, Aoi displayed jealousy and frustration when her childhood friend, Akane, appeared to start dating someone else, hinting at her conflicted feelings toward him.

Aoi is also persuasive and adept with words, capable of convincing people to do what she wants with minimal effort. She maintains a cheerful and composed demeanor, even when harshly rejecting Akane’s repeated love confessions, always smiling while doing so. Due to her attractive appearance and charismatic personality, Aoi is widely considered the “queen of popularity” at Kamome Academy, serving as a female counterpart to Teru Minamoto. She is frequently confessed to by admirers, yet she rejects all of them with ease.

Despite her outward kindness, Aoi harbors a hidden side to her personality. As Akane points out, she tends to look down on others, though she does not see herself as superior either. She constantly masks her true self, maintaining an illusion of perfection in order to be liked. However, this effort backfires, as she becomes convinced that people will ultimately be disappointed when they discover her flaws. This self-imposed pressure results in bitterness and resentment toward her classmates, causing her to suppress her negative emotions out of fear of rejection.

Aoi believes that Akane’s love is directed toward the version of herself she pretends to be and that the real Aoi is not worthy of his affection. She feels isolated and distrustful, convinced that her loved ones deceive her and that no one truly cares for or understands her. Beneath her cheerful exterior, Aoi is a deeply lonely and unhappy person who struggles with her own identity.

As revealed in Chapter 64, Aoi has always longed to go “far away”, which is why she agreed to aid School Mystery No.6. Akane speculates that her desire to leave was rooted in her fear that others would one day discover her true nature and abandon her. Though she believed Akane was oblivious, he had always known about her inclination to look down on others and her reluctance to form genuine, deep connections. Even with Nene, Aoi kept up a carefully crafted persona, refusing to fully open up.

As the story progresses, Aoi abandons her cheerful façade but continues to display kindness, as shown when she tends to Akane’s wounds, despite cynically claiming she didn’t want to look at them. She later becomes emotionally overwhelmed after an argument with Akane, attempting to run away. When Akane reveals that he had always known her true personality and loved her anyway, Aoi breaks down in tears, finally accepting that someone cares for her unconditionally.

Ultimately, as she is trapped in the Far Shore, Aoi’s greatest regret is that she never told Akane “I like you too” before the end.

Appearance

Aoi is a petite and cute girl with indigo-colored hair and eyes. Her hair is styled into two circular sections tied at the back of her head, while her bangs are loosely parted to frame her face. Two thin, wavy locks of hair extend past her chest, giving her a distinctive appearance. She typically wears the Kamome Academy summer uniform, which consists of a cream-colored sailor dress with brown accents.

From Chapter 101 onward, Aoi begins wearing her hair down and switches to the Kamome Academy winter uniform, marking a visual change in her character’s development.

As a kannagi (shrine maiden), Aoi dons traditional attire for the sacrificial ceremony prepared by No.6’s assistants. Her outfit consists of a light teal coat, a black hakama tied with a large bow at the back, and two magenta flowers adorning her hair. In Chapter 69, she tore the hem of her dress to create bandages, which she used to tend to Akane’s wound, demonstrating her innate kindness despite her reserved nature.

Additionally, she was given a protective charm from Teru, which takes the form of a woven bracelet with a bell and tassel at the end. This charm is meant to shield her from supernatural threats, though its effectiveness remains uncertain.

Background

Aoi and Akane Aoi have been childhood friends since they were three years old, after Akane’s family moved in next door to hers. Initially, Aoi disliked Akane, feeling jealous of his ability to be well-liked by others. However, Akane developed deep feelings for Aoi at a young age, becoming infatuated with her despite her apparent indifference.

As revealed in Chapter 69, Aoi’s past was marked by bullying and deception. She was frequently picked on by her classmates in grade school, yet she never showed any signs of defiance or sadness, rendering her unable to respond to their cruelty. Additionally, she was often lied to by her father, further reinforcing her mistrust toward others.

Growing up with Akane, Aoi gradually constructed a cheerful façade to mask her true thoughts and emotions. However, despite these efforts, she was still perceived as “different” from everyone else. At Kamome Academy, she was either placed on a pedestal by her peers or falsely accused due to her reputation, making it difficult for her to form genuine connections.

Although Nene and Akane were the two people she trusted most, Aoi still avoided revealing her true thoughts or expressing an authentic personality, which was the aspect Akane disliked most about her. Despite his frustration, Akane never wavered in his feelings for Aoi, recalling a childhood memory of seeing her cry for the first time a rare moment in which he witnessed her true self beyond the mask she always wore.

Abilities

Aoi possesses the ability to see supernatural beings, a skill that was first revealed in Chapter 61 when she witnessed No.6 and Akane in his Clock Keeper form, much to Akane’s surprise. In Chapter 64, she was also able to see Hanako, and playfully teased Nene by assuming he was her crush, referencing the Confession Tree incident. Even after the severance between the Near Shore and the Far Shore was resolved and she was brought back to the Near Shore, Aoi retained her ability to perceive supernatural entities.

Hints of Aoi’s supernatural control abilities were first foreshadowed in Chapter 29, when she playfully threatened Nene with a small centipede. This ability became more pronounced later, when she was seen summoning and controlling a swarm of insects emerging from No.6’s boundary pit. While dressed in her kannagi attire, Aoi rode a gigantic centipede, which she commanded to stab Akane through the abdomen, demonstrating an impressive level of supernatural control over the creatures within the boundary.

Legacy

Akane Aoi starts as a background character, serving primarily as comic relief and a supportive friend. However, as the story unfolds, she becomes a key player in a significant supernatural event, altering not only her own fate but also the lives of those around her.

Her kind and gentle personality contrasts with the dangers of the supernatural world, making her a symbol of innocence amidst chaos. Her friendship with Nene and her entanglement with supernatural beings ensure that she remains one of the most important human characters in Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun.

Whether Aoi can maintain her normal life or if her fate is permanently tied to the supernatural world remains a mystery, solidifying her role as a character whose presence continues to impact the story’s direction.
