Akame

Akame (アカメ, Akame), known as Akame of the Demon Sword Murasame, serves as the titular heroine alongside Tatsumi in the manga series Akame ga Kill!. She is also the primary protagonist of its prequel,Akame ga Kill! Zero, and plays a significant role as a supporting character in Hinowa ga Yuku!, where she acts as Hinata’s personal swordsmanship tutor and a combat instructor for Elder’s Class.

Originally sold to the Empire with her sister, Kurome, to be trained as an assassin, Akame ultimately defected to the rebels. This pivotal decision came when she was assigned to assassinate General Najenda, the leader of Night Raid. Motivated by a desire to overthrow the corrupt monarchy, she joined the rebellion to fight for justice and freedom.

As the living, it is our responsibility to carry out the wishes of the ones who are gone.
— Akame

Appearance

Akame is a strikingly beautiful girl, distinguished by her red eyes and long, black hair that cascades down to her knees.

Akame’s full appearance.

Her attire consists of a dark, sleeveless top adorned with a white collar and a red tie. She wears a matching red belt that features a side skirt overlay, paired with a black pleated skirt. Completing her look are long black socks and black shoes, along with red gauntlets and black gloves. In battle, Akame sometimes dons a long dark coat. She is frequently seen wielding her Teigu, Murasame, and after activating its trump card, her body becomes marked with faded red scars.

In non-wartime settings, particularly in Soukai, Akame wears a short black yukata cinched with a white sash. However, during wartime, she reverts to her signature dark, sleeveless dress.

Personality

Akame’s cold look.

Akame initially presents herself as a serious and cold-hearted individual, a demeanor shaped by the grueling training imposed by the Empire on her and her sister. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that she is socially awkward rather than genuinely callous. Deeply caring for her comrades, Akame often worries about their survival, shaped by her firsthand experiences of the high mortality rates of war. For instance, after Tatsumi’s battle with Ogre, she hurriedly checked him for injuries, demonstrating her concern. She also rushed to Mt. Kageboshi to save Hinata from Yomihime’s lethal attack.

Akame often conceals her emotions in the wake of a comrade’s death. When Sheele dies, Tatsumi mistakenly believes she copes with loss easily, only for her to reveal the truth through tears, expressing that losing a friend is an unbearable experience. This moment of vulnerability leads Tatsumi to resolve to survive and protect her from such pain, bringing a smile to her face.

In battle, Akame shows no mercy toward her enemies, often using words like “eliminate” and “consign” to reinforce her determination to kill. However, after bearing Murasame’s curse, her demeanor shifts, and she speaks less about her intentions.

A notable aspect of Akame’s character is her love for food; she is known to be a big eater, with a particular fondness for meat from Danger Beasts and fish, much like her sister, Kurome. Her passion for food is so intense that Sheele once noted how Akame’s usually composed demeanor changed when she burned some meat. Akame often takes on the role of the cook in the base, ensuring her comrades are well-fed.

Despite her skills and capabilities, Akame is reluctant to take command and declines promotions unless absolutely necessary. She temporarily leads the Elite Seven in Najasho’s absence and oversees Night Raid’s operations when Najenda is away at the Revolutionary Army’s headquarters, fulfilling her duty as mandated. During the campaign in Soukai, she declines a promotion to Captain and Ninja from Maruge, preferring the freedom to operate as a Foot Soldier under Hinata’s command following the Battle of Shiranui Fortress.

History

Akame is a a skilled assassin and a member of the Night Raid organization. Born into a noble family, Akame was trained from a young age in the art of assassination by the Empire’s secret organization, the Jaegers. However, she quickly became disillusioned with the Empire’s corruption and the ruthless tactics employed by the Jaegers.

During her training, she formed a bond with her sister, Esdeath, who was fiercely loyal to the Empire and became one of its most powerful generals. Recognizing the cruelty of the system and the horrors committed by her comrades, Akame decided to defect and join Night Raid, a group dedicated to overthrowing the corrupt Empire and fighting for the oppressed.

As a member of Night Raid, Akame is known for her exceptional speed, combat skills, and the use of her Imperial Arms, Murasame, a sword that can kill with a single cut. She becomes one of the most feared and respected assassins in the group, using her abilities to take down high-ranking officials and soldiers of the Empire. Despite her cold and stoic demeanor, Akame cares deeply for her comrades and the innocent people they protect.

Throughout the series, Akame faces numerous challenges, including battles against her former allies in the Jaegers, particularly her sister Esdeath. Their confrontations highlight the emotional conflict between familial loyalty and her commitment to justice. Akame also struggles with the moral complexities of assassination and the weight of her choices.

In the anime, Akame ultimately fights against the Empire and faces Esdeath in a climactic battle. Despite her best efforts, she realizes the toll that the struggle has taken on her and her comrades. The series concludes with a sense of hope for the future as Akame continues her fight against injustice.

In the manga, Akame’s journey is slightly different, as she survives the final battle and eventually leaves the fighting behind to live a quieter life. She travels with her comrades, seeking to find a place where she can find peace after the long and arduous conflict.

Akame’s story embodies themes of sacrifice, the search for justice, and the complexity of human emotions in the face of war and corruption. Her evolution from a trained assassin to a dedicated fighter for the oppressed is central to the narrative of Akame ga Kill!.

Equipment and Skills

Physical Abilities

Raised and trained by Gozuki, one of the Four Rakshasa Demons and a notorious assassin, Akame possesses superhuman physical attributes, including strength, speed, reflexes, senses, and durability. This remarkable physical prowess stems from her rigorous training in the perilous wilderness, which has significantly shaped her combat skills and overall capabilities.

Akame is recognized as one of the strongest members of Night Raid, effortlessly defeating even the most formidable foes. Her extensive training allows her combat prowess to rival that of General-ranked soldiers in the Empire, with Esdeath acknowledging her strength. A highly skilled master swordswoman, Akame wields her Teigu,Murasame, with incredible dexterity, capable of slaying numerous enemies, including highly skilled opponents, with ease.

In combat, Akame effortlessly defeated Izou, a fellow master swordsman, and would have killed Tatsumi if not for a protective statue gifted by his chief villager. At her peak, Akame held her own against Esdeath, a powerful master swordswoman, ultimately delivering a fatal blow with a precise thrust ofMurasameinto Esdeath’s heart.

Despite her immense capabilities, Akame possesses a peculiar ability to consume large quantities of food without adverse effects. Her high metabolism allows her to metabolize everything she eats without gaining weight.

Her incredible speed, agility, and reflexes enable her to dodge and counter-attack with lethal effectiveness. Akame also excels in hand-to-hand combat and emits no killing intent, making it difficult for enemies to sense her presence. Wave has noted that she can run at Mach 1 (approximately 340 meters per second).

Like the other members of the Elite Seven, Akame is immune to most poisons.

Current Physical Abilities

After being affected byMurasame’scurse and the aftereffects of a pill, Akame’s body became sluggish, impairing her speed, finesse, and accuracy. Despite this, she maintained her ability to keep up with Hinata and Tobari during training. Even in her weakened state, she fought on equal ground against Yomihime, though she acknowledged that her heaviness prevented her from overpowering her opponent. Nevertheless, she demonstrated her strength by keeping pace with Hinata and Saiha underwater to thwart Waniba’s men during groom selection at Soukai.

To combat the effects of the curse, Akame later received four medicinal pills that temporarily suppressed her curse, allowing her to fight at her full strength. Using these pills, she managed to defeat Moegi with minimal resistance.

Hand-To-Hand Combatant

Trained by Gozuki and Grand General Budo during her time as an assassin, Akame possesses exceptional hand-to-hand combat skills. Further training under Leone and Bulat has enhanced her lethality, enabling her to eliminate several enemies without needing a weapon. Her powerful punches and kicks are sufficient to take down even highly skilled opponents effortlessly.

Drug Doping

After defeating the Dark Squad led by Kylie, Akame obtained drugs prescribed by the Empire. The lead doctor of the Revolutionary Army synthesized these into a single pill that greatly enhanced her physical abilities, allowing her to pressure Esdeath. However, the doctor cautioned that the pill could lead to significant physical damage and potentially compromise her honed senses.

Another type of drug, obtained from Enji, curbs her curse for a limited time. By taking a pill, she nullifies the effects ofMurasame’scurse and can utilize her full strength.

Teigu

Akame wields the Teigu, One-Cut Killer:Murasame, a katana coated in a potent poison that kills those cut by it within seconds, with no known antidote. The Teigu’s Trump Card grants its user a temporary boost in strength through its poisonous curse, which she utilizes in the final battles against the Empire. Notably,Murasame’spoison can target only one life at a time; Akame exploited this ability to kill Tyrant without harming Tatsumi.

AfterMurasamewas destroyed, Akame acquiredThe Complete Book of the World: Rongo Rongoduring her journey east, though she later lost it at sea when her ship was ambushed by a Sea Danger Beast.

Shingu

Before obtaining her Teigu, Akame wielded the katana-based Shingu,Kiriichimonji, known for creating permanent wounds that could not be healed or closed. She used this weapon effectively during her missions with the Empire, defeating several powerful opponents, including members of the Sabatini Show, the Oarburgh Clan, the Gravekeepers, the Revolutionary Army, and the Retribution Group. She ultimately lost it after defeating her mentor and father figure, Gozuki.

Meihou

After her first weapon was broken during a battle with Yomihime at Mt. Kageboshi, Akame received a new Meihou sword as a reward for saving Elder’s Class. This weapon proved more durable than her previous sword, though it lacks any special abilities.

Other Abilities

Akame’s extensive training in the wilderness equips her with various miscellaneous skills essential for an assassin:

  • Wilderness Survival Skills:Highly self-sufficient, Akame can survive alone in the wilderness, having learned to hunt, forage, identify poisonous plants, fish, cook, and camp from Gozuki. She excels in these skills.

  • Firearms:Akame is trained to handle, clean, and shoot firearms, demonstrating sufficient skill in using them effectively.

  • Limited Medical Training:She has basic first aid training to treat injuries sustained during missions.

  • Gifted Intelligence:Highly intelligent, analytical, and cunning, Akame calmly analyzes her opponents in battle, gathering information to efficiently dispatch enemies. During her travels to Wakoku, she demonstrated her intelligence by studying the local language usingRongo Rongo, gaining enough literacy to communicate fluently within one sea voyage.
