Ai Ohto (大戸 アイ, Ōto Ai) is the main protagonist of the anime series Wonder Egg Priority. A 14-year-old girl with heterochromia, Ai becomes a recluse and stops attending school after enduring persistent bullying. Her life takes a drastic turn when she encounters a mysterious entity that offers her a way to save her only friend by entering a dream world and fighting to protect the lives of girls represented by “Wonder Eggs.” Through these experiences, Ai confronts her trauma, forms new bonds, and begins to understand the complexities of pain, friendship, and self-worth.
Appearance

Appearance in Anime
Ai Ohto is a petite, short-statured girl whose most distinguishing trait is her heterochromia: her left eye is a yellowish amber, while her right eye is a deeper ocean blue, often obscured by her bangs. She has dark blue hair styled into a fluffy bob cut with a prominent ahoge that curves to her right. A small yellow triangular hair clip sits above her left eye.
Her typical outfit consists of a bright yellow hoodie featuring sunflower motifs near the pockets, paired with black volleyball shorts. At home, she wears a light pink and purple striped tank top. During school scenes, Ai is shown in her middle school uniform, a white blouse, a dark navy pinafore, and a green tie. She usually wears white and blue platform sneakers.
Ai is often portrayed with a neutral or distant expression, though she becomes visibly emotional in intense or stressful situations. Around her friends, however, she tends to soften, frequently showing a gentle smile as she opens up to them.
Personality
Ai Ohto is an introverted and soft-spoken girl who tends to keep to herself, often avoiding social interaction due to past trauma and bullying. Though reserved, she exhibits strong protective instincts toward those she cares about and is willing to face danger for their sake. Initially indifferent to forming friendships, Ai’s outlook begins to change after befriending Koito Nagase, a fellow outcast.
Following Koito’s suicide, Ai develops a deep sense of guilt and blame, believing herself responsible for what happened. This becomes the driving force behind her decision to participate in the Wonder Egg battles, where she resolves to save others in hopes of one day reviving Koito. Her determination and perseverance grow stronger with each person she helps, gradually revealing a compassionate and selfless core.
Despite her inner strength, Ai struggles with low self-esteem and emotional vulnerability, often reminiscing about Koito and wrestling with feelings of loss. However, through her interactions with others such as helping Minami Suzuhara confront her trauma and supporting Neiru Aonuma Ai slowly emerges from her shell. She displays sincere kindness and empathy, and although she is naive about certain subjects, her idealistic and caring nature becomes a source of hope to those around her.
Background
Ai Ohto spent much of her early adolescence isolated, suffering from bullying due to her heterochromia. Lacking friends and support, her world changed when Koito Nagase transferred into her class. Koito immediately took an interest in Ai and persistently sought her out, even following her home. The two became close, with Koito becoming Ai’s first and only friend.
Ai believed Koito was being bullied out of jealousy. In an effort to protect her, Ai attempted to record the bullying as evidence but froze during the incident, unable to help. Shortly afterward, Koito took her own life, an event that devastated Ai and led her to withdraw from school and society altogether. She refused to speak even to her teacher, Mr. Sawaki, who visited her at home.
Haunted by guilt and longing to see Koito again, Ai encountered the mysterious beings Acca and Ura-Acca. They offered her a chance to resurrect Koito by participating in a dangerous game involving “Wonder Eggs.” By purchasing these eggs and entering dream worlds, Ai was tasked with protecting the girls inside from manifestations of their trauma, such as Seeno Evils, Haters, and Wonder Killers.
During her journey, Ai met other Egg Fighters Neiru Aonuma, Rika Kawai, and Momoe Sawaki. Though initially distant, Neiru eventually accepted Ai’s friendship after Ai visited her in the hospital. Over time, the four girls developed a deep bond as they continued to fight together.
In her final mission, Ai’s Wonder Egg contained an alternate version of herself from another universe, one in which she had never met Koito and had been manipulated by Mr. Sawaki. Together, the two Ais confronted a monstrous version of Sawaki. Though they succeeded in defeating it, the other Ai lost an eye in the process. She sacrificed herself, allowing Ai to finally bring Koito back to life.
However, the reunion was not as Ai had hoped. When she approached Koito at school, Koito failed to recognize her and referred to her only as the girl Mr. Sawaki used as a painting model. Heartbroken, Ai ran away. Though she remained in school for a time, she eventually transferred.
On her way home one day, Ai saw a gacha machine and was reminded of Neiru. Holding onto hope, she decided to reenter the world of Wonder Eggs in a bid to bring Neiru back.
Abilities
Weapons
Ai’s primary weapon is a multi-colored ballpoint pen that transforms into a large, ornate mace-like weapon. Though her skill with it is still developing, the weapon delivers immensely powerful strikes capable of defeating multiple enemies in the dream world.
She has also demonstrated creativity and adaptability in combat. For instance, when battling Minami’s coach, Ai fashioned a whip-like weapon from Minami’s gymnastics ribbon. This improvised weapon could extend, retract, and even slice through solid stone pillars, showing its sharpness and flexibility.
Additionally, Ai has used pen-lights given to her by Mako and Miko, which expanded into saber-like weapons about two-thirds her height. These lightsabers proved useful in close combat.
She also briefly wielded Yae Yoshida’s prayer beads, which gave her the ability to see Yae’s Wonder Killer highlighting that some weapons grant specific supernatural enhancements or perceptions.
Pomander
Ai possesses a pomander, a magical object given to her by Acca and Ura-Acca. Upon activation, it hatches a creature that resembles a chameleon, which Ai names Leon. While Leon’s full capabilities are not entirely clear, pomanders generally serve as support companions in the Wonder Egg battles, often offering emotional and possibly tactical assistance.
Etymology
Ai’s full name is rich in meaning and wordplay, especially in relation to her defining trait—heterochromia.
Her name “Ai Ohto” is a homophone for the English phrase “odd eye” (オッドアイ, oddoai), a term used in Japan to describe someone with differently colored eyes.
Her surname Ohto (大戸) combines the kanji 大 (ō) – “big” or “great” and 戸 (to) – “door”
Despite its kanji form, the pronunciation of her surname mimics the English word “odd” (オ = o, ド = do) when transcribed phonetically, completing the pun “odd eye.”
