Åbyhøj Church

Åbyhøj Church

Åbyhøj Church (Danish: Skt. Åbyhøj Kirke) is located in Aarhus, Denmark, situated in the western Åbyhøj neighborhood on Silkeborgvej. As a parish church within the Church of Denmark, the Danish state church, it falls under the Diocese of Aarhus. Åbyhøj Church is part of the Åby Parish along with Åby Church, serving approximately 11,000 parish members.[1][2][3]

The Åbyhøj Church, designed by Danish architect Harald Lønborg-Jensen, was inaugurated in 1945. Lønborg-Jensen drew inspiration from a church in Løgumkloster, resulting in architectural similarities between the two. Originally, the church spire was intended to feature a flèche, but due to material shortages during the Second World War, it could not be completed properly. In 1973, the spire was replaced with a new, slimmer version due to rot. Inside, the altar, made of grey and yellow travertine, faces north and is embellished with a gilded crucifix. The color scheme throughout the church is subdued, and the floor is paved with red brick. In 1994, the church received a new organ and new windows in the choir.[4]In 1994 the church got a new organ and new windows in the choir.[5]

The church features a cemetery that was officially inaugurated on November 16, 1927, with the first burial occurring on December 23 of the same year. The cemetery is structured around a network of paths, dividing it into smaller units. The main axis of the cemetery runs from north to south, with the church serving as the central focal point. Primary paths are paved, while secondary paths are composed of gravel, facilitating navigation throughout the cemetery grounds.[6][7]
