Abe Amaaki

Abe Amaaki (安部 雨明) is the older, identical twin brother of Abe Haruaki in the Youkai Gakkou no Sensei Hajimemashita series. Unlike his brother, Amaaki has a mysterious and reserved demeanor, often finding himself at odds with Haruaki’s more timid and empathetic personality. Despite their differences, the two share a deep familial bond that becomes central to several story arcs.

Appearance in Manga

When Mame, Sano, Beniko, and Hijita first meet Amaaki, they immediately notice that he exudes a composed and confident aura, often contrasting with Haruaki’s more nervous and uncertain nature. Amaaki handles social interactions with ease, displaying a calm demeanor and tact that earns him admiration and respect from those he encounters.

Beneath his composed exterior, however, Amaaki harbors a deep-seated fear and disdain for youkai, particularly oni. This stems from a traumatic childhood incident where he and his father were attacked by youkai, leaving him wary and uneasy around non-humanoid beings from Hyakki Academy. Despite his fears, Amaaki is fiercely protective of Haruaki, driven by an almost obsessive need to shield his younger twin from harm. This brocon tendency has led Amaaki to attempt dragging Haruaki away from the academy on multiple occasions. However, over time, he comes to trust Haruaki’s ability to navigate his life among the youkai, allowing him to remain at the school.

Appearance

Amaaki and Haruaki are identical twins, sharing the same dark hair and red eyes. However, Amaaki’s demeanor often sets him apart. While his usual attire consists of casual clothing or ceremonial robes, depending on his duties, his expression changes depending on his environment. Around the youkai of Hyakki Academy, Amaaki frequently wears a visibly uneasy or scared look, betraying his discomfort. Outside of such situations, he maintains a calm, collected appearance that reflects his composed personality, further distinguishing him from Haruaki’s more nervous disposition.

Background

Amaaki and Haruaki were born into a family with deep roots in the youkai world. As the older twin, Amaaki often felt a sense of duty to guide and protect Haruaki, a role that shaped much of their sibling dynamic. The two share a complex relationship, defined by both a natural camaraderie and moments of rivalry as they navigate their identities and responsibilities within the youkai community.

While Haruaki embraces a more outgoing and carefree lifestyle, Amaaki’s focus on tradition and discipline highlights the duality of their personalities, creating a compelling contrast.

Role inYoukai Gakkou no Sensei Hajimemashita

Amaaki frequently takes on the role of protector and advisor to Haruaki, offering guidance and support when his younger brother faces challenges. His calm demeanor and strategic thinking often balance Haruaki’s impulsiveness, making them a complementary duo.

Throughout the series, Amaaki’s relationship with Haruaki is explored in depth, showcasing moments of both unity and conflict. Their differing viewpoints and approaches to life create tension at times, but these conflicts often lead to mutual growth and understanding.

Amaaki’s personality reflects a deep respect for tradition and the values of their family and community. His journey involves learning to adapt to change and finding a balance between honoring the past and embracing the future.

Relationships

Haruaki Abe
Amaaki and Haruaki are identical twins who were very close growing up. While Amaaki excelled in social interactions and handling introductions, Haruaki was adept at dealing with the supernatural, showing fearlessness toward ghosts and youkai. Haruaki viewed this ability as natural, something Amaaki could not relate to.

The twins did everything together as children, though Amaaki often progressed faster in most areas, except when it came to anything involving sailor uniforms, which seemed to slow him down in amusement. When Haruaki left for Hyakki Academy, Amaaki tried to mirror his twin’s mannerisms by acting like him in the mirror. However, this effort felt disappointing and unnatural, making Amaaki long for their close bond to be restored.

Mikoto Sano
Amaaki feels most comfortable around Sano compared to other students, as Sano’s humanlike appearance helps ease his discomfort with youkai. Despite their differences, both share a deep care for Haruaki. However, their perspectives on him vary significantly. Sano views Haruaki as a strong, capable person who simply needs a boost in confidence, while Amaaki sees him as weak and in need of constant protection, often clashing with Sano’s approach to helping Haruaki grow.

Izuna Hatanaka
Amaaki and Hatanaka have a contentious relationship. They frequently use each other’s fears to their advantage, with Amaaki’s fear of youkai and Hatanaka’s fear of doctors fueling their mutual dislike. Hatanaka finds Amaaki irritating and inconsiderate, while Amaaki views Hatanaka as brash and thoughtless. Their biggest source of tension stems from how they perceive Haruaki—Hatanaka respects Haruaki’s potential and ability, while Amaaki remains overprotective, unable to see him as anything other than someone who needs safeguarding. This fundamental disagreement causes friction between the two.

Etymology

The surname “Abe” is composed of the kanji 安 (a), meaning “peace” or “quiet,” and 部 (be), meaning “part,” “department,” or “category.” Together, the name implies “a peaceful division” or “a quiet category.”
