Kazuma

Kazuma (兆麻, Kazuma), originally known as Kiyotsugu Hirano (平野の清次, Hirano Kiyotsugu), serves as Bishamonten’s Shinki and guidepost. In addition to his role with Bishamon, he is also a Shinki of Yato, where he goes by the name Kazune (暦音, Kazune).

People don’t always wish for good things. There are evil wishes, too.
— Kazuma

Appearance

Kazuma presents a youthful visage, appearing no older than 19 years. He has short, neatly styled brown hair and vibrant green eyes, standing at a height of 174 cm. Kazuma is frequently seen wearing thick-rimmed glasses and is typically attired in the standard uniform of Bishamon’s battle Shinki, which features a black suit accented with red details and a purple tie. In the period before the Ma Clan’s extinction, he wore a green kimono, with his hair tied back in a low bun.

As Bishamon’s Shinki, Kazuma’s vessel form is represented by a cherry blossom-shaped earring; prior to becoming a blessed regalia, he appeared as a nail. When he serves as Yato’s Shinki, his divine attire transforms into a black tracksuit, complete with gloves, a scarf, and boots. His divine weapon is a katana, which can also be transformed into a bow and arrow, highlighting his adaptability and skill in combat.

Personality

Kazuma is a composed and serious individual who embodies loyalty and responsibility. He deeply cares for Vaisravana/Bishamonten, affectionately calling her “Veena,” and is dedicated to supporting his fellow Shinki. His unwavering loyalty extends to Yato, to whom he pleaded for assistance in eliminating corrupt Shinki to save Bishamonten, highlighting his sense of duty.

Despite initially lacking talent as a Shinki, Kazuma’s hard work and commitment have transformed him into a blessed Shinki. He is known for his kindness and serves as a supportive teacher to others, including Yukine. His serious demeanor is occasionally tempered by a playful side, particularly in his interactions with friends. Kazuma enjoys teasing Yukine and Yato, engaging in light-hearted antics, such as writing on Yukine’s face during practice and humorously presenting Yato with a carrier pigeon instead of a promised phone.

However, Kazuma is haunted by his past actions, particularly his role in the destruction of Bishamonten’s Shinki clan. He grapples with guilt for not revealing the truth to her and for feeling a sense of validation in her dependence on him. Kazuma is knowledgeable about his duties and adept in blessed Shinki techniques, using his analytical skills to guide others in battle, believing that “to be in total control of a situation, you must have confidence in yourself.”

He strives for self-improvement, driven by his desire to honor Bishamonten. In an effort to prevent blighting her, Kazuma suppresses his emotions and justifies his actions, claiming that if he does not feel guilt, they cannot be sins. He acknowledges his imperfections and regrets but insists that he acted correctly, a perspective that Yukine finds extreme.

Kazuma’s loyalty can lead to extreme measures; he was willing to sacrifice fellow Shinki to save Bishamonten, including committing murder against Tsuguha. His decision to use Bind on Yukine to extract information about a sorcerer further illustrates his willingness to jeopardize relationships and Yato’s well-being, ultimately alienating Yukine, who now views him as an adversary.

History

In his human life, Kazuma was known as Kiyotsugu Hirano, the second son of a wealthy salt merchant. Chosen by his father to inherit the family business, his life took a tragic turn when he was murdered by his elder brother just a day before his wedding, at the tender age of 19. It is speculated that his intended bride was named Oyone.

Following his death, Kazuma became a Shinki of Bishamonten. Under the guidance of Touma, a trusted mentor within Bishamon’s ranks, Kazuma initially struggled to master the creation of borderlines and lacked motivation. However, during a patrol with Bishamon and her other battle Shinki to hunt for ayakashi, he discovered his unique ability to accurately pinpoint their locations. This revelation marked a turning point in his journey as Bishamon’s vessel.

When Bishamon fell ill from blight, the Ma clan’s guidepost sought the source of her affliction and conducted multiple Ablutions. Tragically, during this process, Touma was cast into a vent for objecting to the guidepost’s methods. As fear and suspicion spread among the clan, the situation escalated into violence, with Shinki attacking one another using borderlines. In a moment of despair, Kazuma rushed to Bishamon and revealed the betrayal within the clan. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Bishamon asked Kazuma if he would be her Shinki once she reincarnated. He vowed that he would not let her die.

Determined to save Bishamon, Kazuma sought out Yato and the Stray, requesting them to eliminate his clansmen to save his master. Although he offered to relinquish his name in exchange for this favor, Yato opted to let Kazuma repay the debt later. Following Kazuma’s plea, Yato confronted the ayakashi, ensuring Bishamon’s survival.

As the sole survivor of the Ma clan, Kazuma carried immense guilt, considering himself a traitor. He longed to confess the truth to Bishamon and urged her to take in other Shinki, believing he could not protect her as a mere nail. However, he hesitated, fearing her grief over losing others. Alongside this guilt, Kazuma felt a deep sense of indebtedness to Yato for saving Bishamon’s life. In the years that followed the Ma clan’s extinction, he frequently visited Yato, bringing him food or purchasing items from his sales.

Four years after the clan’s demise, Kazuma’s first visit to Yato involved sharing a meal and drinks. During this encounter, a drunken Yato expressed his desire for a loyal Shinki like Kazuma, and he attempted to give Kazuma a second name, which would have turned him into a Stray. However, Kazuma successfully created a powerful borderline to prevent this, shattering the wooden deck between them in the process. Grateful for this newfound strength, he thanked Yato and returned to Bishamon to share his progress, excited to possess a skill that could protect her from ayakashi.

From that moment forward, Kazuma took it upon himself to manage all matters concerning the Shinki Bishamon would take in, ultimately leading to the establishment of the current Ha clan.

Relationships

Bishamon
Kazuma has a profound care for his master, Bishamon, displaying immense loyalty and a desire to protect her at all costs. While he is willing to confront her when necessary, whether for her own well-being or that of his fellow Shinki, Bishamon reciprocates this respect by treating him as an equal rather than merely a subordinate. She seeks his advice and values his opinions, recognizing him as one of her precious blessed Shinki.

Hints of romantic feelings from Kazuma toward Bishamon are subtly woven throughout the manga, evidenced by the personal background he has set on his cellphone and his extreme emotional response should anything happen to her. His protectiveness is exemplified by his willingness to kill another Shinki to preserve her health. In Chapter 38, when Yato steals Kazuma’s phone, he discovers a collection of photos of Bishamon, which further illustrates Kazuma’s deep affection for her.

Their relationship experiences a strain when Bishamon feels betrayed upon discovering Kazuma’s involvement with Yato. Despite this, she does not excommunicate him but instead exiles him. Kazuma eventually returns, confronting Bishamon and revealing the truth: he had asked Yato to eliminate his Shinki clan to protect her. He expresses his guilt over his actions, admitting that he felt a sense of worthlessness and happiness when she claimed she only needed him, leading him to withhold the truth. After learning that Kazuma had sought Yato’s help to save her from blight, Bishamon forgives him, ending his exile and welcoming him back by her side.

Kazuma shares a common sentiment with Bishamon regarding their disdain forNora, which complicates his feelings towards Yato, whose only Shinki at the time was Nora. Kazuma has stated that Bishamon is the only one who can hold his name, and his extensive collection of photos of her suggests that his feelings extend beyond mere servitude, though he refrains from acting on them, likely due to the constraints of their master-servant relationship and the societal expectations placed upon Shinki.

Yato
Kazuma regards Yato as his “benefactor,” feeling a strong sense of indebtedness toward him. He cares for Yato deeply, even going so far as to askHiyorito keep an eye on him. Kazuma had previously requested Yato to eliminate Bishamon’s old Shinki, who were corrupt and posed a threat to her safety. His bond with Yato is reinforced through Kazuma’s involvement in Yato’s Purification Ceremony, despite being Bishamon’s greatest adversary.

The relationship between Kazuma and Yato evolves after Kazuma learns that Kuguha orchestrated the blight affecting Bishamon and her Shinki, aiming to kill her and resurrect her in order to seize control. This revelation leads Bishamon to mend her relationship with Kazuma, releasing him from exile and asking him to be her guidepost.

Despite their past conflicts, Kazuma and Yato maintain a friendly relationship. Kazuma frequently teaches Yukine and often sees Yato visiting Bishamon’s residence to observe their practice. Even when Yukine labels Kazuma an enemy, Yato defends him, acknowledging that Kazuma views Yato as a benefactor, just as Yato feels the same. After Yato defeated the Ma clan, Kazuma protected him from Bishamon’s wrath, bringing him food and offering companionship.

In Chapter 78 of the manga, Kazuma ultimately becomes Yato’s Shinki, thus taking on the title of Nora.

Hiyori Iki
Kazuma trusts Hiyori, asking her to look after Yato, reflecting his concern for his benefactor’s well-being. Hiyori recognizes Kazuma as one of the few Shinki willing to assist Yato during his Purification Ceremony, showcasing her trust in him. During a harrowing event when both of them are kidnapped by Kuguha, Kazuma worries about Hiyori’s health, understanding the grave consequences of her soul being away from her body for too long.

Although their interactions become less frequent afterward, there is a mutual understanding between them as friends. When Yukine declares Kazuma an enemy, Hiyori is saddened by the rift in their relationship and hopes for reconciliation between the two.

Yukine
Kazuma plays a pivotal role in assisting Yukine with his Ablution, earning the latter’s gratitude. However, Yukine feels guilty for inadvertently exposing Kazuma’s involvement in saving Yato, which led to Yato’s blight. Following Yato and Bishamon’s reconciliation, Yukine asks Kazuma to become his teacher, a request Kazuma accepts, fostering a mentor-student relationship between them. Kazuma teases Yukine but also respects him as an ally and friend.

However, tensions rise when Yato’s father threatens the heavens, leading to a confrontation where Kazuma implicitly pressures Yukine for information about a sorcerer. Yukine refuses, fearing Yato’s health would be endangered if the sorcerer is harmed. Despite initially respecting Yukine’s decision, Kazuma resorts to using Resound on him to forcefully extract information, resulting in Yukine viewing him as an enemy. This conflict escalates further, with Kazuma contemplating similar actions against Kuguha in Chapter 57, but is ultimately stopped byTsuyu.

In Chapter 59, amid a frantic search for Bishamon, Kazuma seeks information regarding the sorcerer, revealing his desperation and determination to protect his master.
