Michiru Kagemori

Michiru Kagemori (影森みちる) is the main protagonist of BNA: Brand New Animal, produced by Studio Trigger. She is a former 17-year-old high school student (turning 18 in Episode 4) who suddenly transforms into a Beastman. Along with her childhood friend Nazuna Hiwatashi, Michiru is the first known case of a human becoming a Beastman, an event that propels her into the hidden world of Beastmen and drives her search for the truth behind her transformation.

I don’t care if you’re human or beastman. You’re you.

Tanuki Beastman

Michiru is primarily a tanuki Beastman, though she shows traits resembling a blue jay (notably her blue color scheme) and a raccoon (the markings around her eyes). She has chin-length blue bob-cut hair with black tips, a matching blue tail with a black end, teal eyes, and black, pointed, cat-like ears. Her paws and a facial patch are dark brown, while the rest of her fur is light brown, similar to a real tanuki.

Her usual outfit consists of a loose gray tank top over a black undershirt, navy dolphin shorts with light green trim, a red sports jacket with white trim and an unfolded collar, and white sneakers with red soles. Her tail protrudes from her shorts. Before entering Anima City, she wears a red hooded cloak. She often removes her jacket during physical activity and carries a beige, crosshatched wallet.

In her human form, Michiru has pale skin, black hair and eyebrows, and brown eyes, with an asymmetric bob and a stray tuft on the left side. Her school uniform includes a white short-sleeved collared shirt, a baby blue bow tie, a teal high-waisted skirt, light gray knee-high socks, and black loafers. Her basketball uniform is a white jersey with orange accents, the word Reiwa in black, and the number 8. She carries a canvas backpack and her basketball in a yellow bag. While in hiding, she wore an oversized gray hoodie and sweatpants.

As a child, she had a similar complexion and haircut with centered bangs and large amber eyes, and was seen wearing a yellow T-shirt, pale blue overalls, a pink bow, and animal ears. When playing baseball with the Bears Baseball Team, she wears their white-and-yellow jersey, a yellow cap with bear ears, a black undershirt, and black athletic shoes.

Personality

Michiru is compassionate, brave, and energetic. She cares deeply for both humans and Beastmen and opposes violence, even toward those with malicious intent. She is willing to risk herself to protect others.

She is strong-willed, stubborn, and resistant to peer pressure. Once she sets a goal, she pursues it relentlessly, as shown when she continued searching for her lost wallet despite others discouraging her. However, this determination often turns into recklessness, causing her to neglect her own safety and sometimes dismiss others’ perspectives.

Initially, Michiru resented her Beastman form, but after living in Anima City and understanding Beastmen better, she chose to accept it, at least temporarily. This change stemmed from her growing awareness of Beastman life. In the manga, she is also shown becoming intoxicated after drinking a catnip-infused beverage.

History

Michiru Kagemori was an ordinary high school student who lived a normal life alongside her close friend Nazuna Hiwatashi. Her life abruptly changed when she was involved in an unexplained accident that caused her to suddenly transform into a Beastman. Fearing discrimination and confusion, Michiru fled to Anima City, a segregated metropolis built as a refuge for Beastmen. There, she struggled to survive as a newcomer while searching for answers about her mutation and hoping to return to her human life.

During her time in Anima City, Michiru became involved in various conflicts affecting Beastmen society, including criminal activity, political tension, and extremist movements. She formed bonds with Beastmen residents and gradually learned about their history, prejudice, and struggles. Through these experiences, Michiru’s initial rejection of her Beastman identity softened, and she began to empathize deeply with their plight.

As she continued investigating the truth behind human-to-Beastman transformations, Michiru uncovered conspiracies tied to Beastman discrimination and exploitation. Her journey forced her to confront her own impulsiveness and grow emotionally, shifting from a self-focused desire to return to normal to a broader resolve to protect others. By the end of the series, Michiru embraces her identity as a Beastman, choosing to remain in Anima City and fight for coexistence between humans and Beastmen.
