Did You Know?

Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Ursula Callistis

Atsuko Kagari (アツコ・カガリ, Kagari Atsuko), more commonly known by her nickname Akko (アッコ), is the titular main protagonist of Little Witch Academia. She is a 16-year-old first-generation witch from Japan and an admirer of Shiny Chariot.

A witch who was once popular for her extravagant magic show. Her magic exaggerations were able to draw immense audiences. However, her fellow witches ostracized her and condemned her actions, stating that she was giving normal humans the wrong idea about witches.

Appearance

Ursula is an adult woman with fair skin, red eyes, and back-length dark blue hair tied near the end into a small ponytail over her right shoulder. She wears Luna Nova’s standard staff uniform: a dark violet hooded dress with long sleeves and a red flame-like hem design, a black choker, and a matching witch hat decorated with a red feather and a golden crescent. Her outfit is completed by dark blue knee-high boots with red tips. Ursula also wears oval black-framed glasses, which often obscure her eyes and help conceal her resemblance to Shiny Chariot, though she does not actually need them. She appears noticeably younger than the other teachers, a fact frequently remarked upon.

As Shiny Chariot, her hair was shorter, red-toned, and styled to keep it mostly away from her eyes. She wore a striking stage costume consisting of a white stylized tailcoat vest, blue skirt, brown belt, blue thigh-high stockings, white boots with red accents, and a white witch hat adorned with a blue band and star emblem, along with a red cape.

Ursula’s true appearance is revealed during moments of serious combat. Without her hat, glasses, or hair tie, her naturally red hair falls freely and her eyes are fully visible. She modifies her uniform for mobility, giving it the appearance of a fitted black bodysuit. After her identity is exposed, she continues teaching at Luna Nova dressed as Ursula, retaining her glasses but no longer disguising her red hair.

Personality

From early childhood, Chariot aspired to become a witch who could make people smile. Her natural charm and radiant personality drew others to her, though her enthusiasm for magic often exceeded her technical skill, resulting in frequent mistakes. Her steadfast belief that magic should bring happiness led her to obtain the staff of seven stars, Claiomh Solais, which she named the Shiny Rod. Seeking greater power, she visited the Fountain of Polaris, which initially rejected her as unworthy. Through renewed dedication and hard work, she eventually earned the power of the stars and awakened the first six Words of Arcturus. Despite her immense power, Chariot never sought strength for its own sake, wishing only to use magic for others. Highly sensitive to her audience, she was deeply affected when her performances failed to make people smile, a pressure that grew overwhelming as her fame increased and ultimately contributed to her downfall.

After leaving the stage, Chariot assumed the identity of Ursula Callistis and became an astronomy teacher at Luna Nova. Though she never fully lost her passion for magic, years spent as a humble teacher weighed heavily on her, and reminders of her past often left her discouraged. Meeting Akko, her devoted fan and the new bearer of the Shiny Rod, gave Ursula hope for redemption. Her guidance of Akko reflects deep compassion, selflessness, and wisdom shaped by experience rather than youthful idealism. Their bond, along with her discoveries about her past failures, allowed Ursula to understand what she once lacked and ultimately become the hero her student believed her to be. By the end of the series, she continues teaching at Luna Nova, embracing her true self without disguising her natural hair.

Abilities and Equipment

Chariot is an exceptionally powerful witch who earned the Magic of Stars through perseverance and dedication. As Shiny Chariot, she performed some of the greatest magical feats in the series, though as Ursula she limits her magic to conceal her identity. When using powerful spells, her hair reverts to its natural red. She is highly skilled in magical astrology, spirit communication, and advanced spellcasting, capable of projecting destructive energy beams, barriers, large energy constructs, levitating objects or people, repairing and enhancing items, and casting spells without incantations. She is fluent in several magical languages and can transmit her voice and project images through magic. Her once-great broom flying ability was permanently lost after exposure to Wagandea pollen.

From childhood, Chariot excelled in creation and transformation magic, beginning with conjured butterflies and later producing complex constructs such as animals, wings, centaur-like forms, and fireworks, as well as reversing transformation magic. Beyond magic, Ursula possesses extraordinary physical strength, agility, and endurance, capable of shattering stone, overpowering large foes, and surviving extreme injuries, even fighting effectively without magic.

The Shiny Rod is a legendary staff embodying the power of the seven stars of the Big Dipper, responding to its wielder’s heart. It can transform into a broom or bow, manifest arrows through the Seven Words of Arcturus, and greatly amplify spells. After causing a disastrous performance that damaged the moon and drained her audience’s magic, Chariot stopped wielding it, and the Rod ultimately returned to the stars after later fading from Akko’s hands.
