Appearance
Akira is a young man of average height with an athletic build. He has wispy black hair that was previously neat when he was still working but is left in its ruffled state after the plague started. He has wide circular black eyes that shine with optimism within them, framed by thin eyebrows. He is often seen with a wide grin when a ridiculous near suicidal yet effective idea worms into his head.
When he was still working, he wore professional attire consisting of a long sleeved button up shirt secured by a striped tie of varying colors, with an id hanging on his neck, a pair of office slacks, and socked feet slid into neat office shoes.
After the plague started, Akira began wearing more casual clothing. In his profile image, he is shown wearing a white shirt under a tracksuit jacket with white trimming, the jacket having a color blocked design of dark green and emerald. Paired with this are casual jogging pants and yellow green running shoes. He occasionally dons a yellow pair of goggles when he rides his motorcycle.
In episode 10, he had his hair styled in dreadlocks to accomplish one of the many things written on his bucket list. He wore attire more fitting for helping in the countryside, starting with a yellow bandanna securing his dreadlocks, green overalls over his typical white shirt, and a pair of white wellington boots.
Personality
Initially, Akira was very optimistic, with dreams and a bright outlook for the future. After years of working in the black company, the company’s exploitative nature drained him of his mental and emotional strength, to the point that he expressed near suicidal ideation in one instance of his life. When the zombie apocalypse started, he experienced a great sense of freedom and tried to experience everything life had to offer with childlike optimism.
History
Akira began as an enthusiastic new hire excited to work at a major company. He met his branch leader Gonzou and quickly became infatuated with Saori Ohtori after a brief encounter. However, he soon discovered the company was a black company, forcing employees to work endlessly. After his welcome party, Akira was immediately put to work for three days straight without sleep. Over time, the harsh environment broke him mentally, and seeing Saori involved with their boss pushed him further into despair. He became so drained that he even attempted suicide but failed in every attempt.
The next morning, Akira discovered the zombie outbreak when he found his landlord eating a tenant. Using his athletic skills, he escaped and chose to live freely. He decided to write a bucket list and set out to confess to Saori, only to find she had turned into a zombie. After confessing, he ran away and continued completing items on his list. He met neighbors Mikio and Sumire Kousaka before they fled, and later encountered Shizuka at a convenience store. She criticized his lack of survival sense before stealing his bike, while Akira narrowly escaped zombies.
Akira reunited with his best friend Kencho and saved him from a hotel full of zombies. They later teamed up to get a large TV in Akihabara, meeting other survivors, including Yukari, who was later bitten and died. The experience strengthened Akira’s resolve to keep living. Later, he decided he wanted to be a hero. At an aquarium, Akira used a diving suit to save a schoolgirl and fought a zombie shark with help from Kencho and Shizuka. Afterward, Shizuka revealed her name and Akira admitted she had become precious to him, flustering her.
