Appearance

Wataru Sajo has black hair, which he currently dyes dark brown, styled with bangs swept to the left, and purple eyes. Overall, his appearance is considered fairly average.
In the Light Novel, Kaede and Aika rate his looks as a “49,” highlighting his ordinary appearance. Before his change in perspective, Wataru dressed more stylishly and had a hairstyle that did not suit his face, all in an effort to impress Aika.
Personality
At the beginning of the story, Wataru comes across as pushy, devoted, and clingy toward Aika. However, after gaining a clearer perspective on reality, he develops a more laid-back and mature demeanor. He stops being the center of amusement in his class and tries to avoid unwanted attention. Despite this, his love and devotion to Aika sometimes lead him to make assertive decisions to support her.
Wataru also displays notable social insight and experience. Throughout the series, he assists classmates with personal problems, offering guidance and perspective that help them navigate their issues. This ability earns him respect from peers such as Rin Shinomiya and the other members of the Disciplinary Committee.
History
Since middle school, Wataru had always admired Aika. He confessed his love to her countless times, only to be rejected each time. Determined to be closer to her, he studied hard so he could enter the same high school, Kōetsu High. This continued until one day, while chasing after her on the way to school, he was nearly hit by a soccer ball. The close call jolted him out of his fantasy, making him realize his feelings were one-sided and that he wasn’t worthy of her, leading him to finally decide to give up on her.
Abilities
Before the start of the series, Wataru maintained strong academic performance, ranking near the top thirty in his first-year grades. However, after giving up on Aika, his confidence and motivation declined, which caused his ranking to drop below sixty. Despite not being part of any school clubs, Kaede and Rin often try to persuade him to join the Student Council or the Disciplinary Committee due to his competence, reliability, and trustworthiness.
Wataru gained work experience early on, secretly holding a part-time job in middle school to earn money and create opportunities to impress Aika. This experience honed his management skills and gave him exposure to customer service, as seen when he assisted Ichinose Mina with a difficult client. He also demonstrates teaching ability, helping Mina and first-year students prepare for the Cultural Festival, and shows proficiency with computers, surprising Aika with his skill.
Physically, Wataru does not appear athletic at first, though he practiced muscle training and jogging to impress Aika. She and Kei notice his toned back and subtle muscularity when hugging him, indicating that he has a robust physique despite his otherwise average appearance. His greatest display of physical ability is during the Cultural Festival, where he assists the Disciplinary Committee with manual labor tasks.
