Did You Know?

Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Hatsuharu Sohma

Hatsuharu Sohma (草摩 溌春, Sōma Hatsuharu, “Hatsuharu Soma”) more commonly known by his nickname Haru (春), is one of the recurring characters of the anime Fruits Basket and manga series. He is the Ox of the Chinese Zodiac and is known for his calm, easygoing demeanor that sharply contrasts with his wild, rebellious alter ego, “Black Haru.” Despite his unpredictable nature, Haru is deeply loyal, compassionate, and protective toward those he cares about, especially Yuki Sohma and Isuzu “Rin” Sohma.

Appearance

Haru is a handsome, tall, and slender young man with shaggy, two-toned snowy white hair with black roots that stick out in all directions. He has sharp yet slightly droopy dark brown eyes that give him a calm but cool appearance.

He wears the standard Kaibara High male uniform, consisting of a blue sweater (white during summer) with a yellow shirt underneath and a white collar and edges. Unlike most students, Haru wears his uniform unbuttoned and without a necktie, giving him a laid-back, rebellious look.

He accessorizes with chokers, spikes, small hoops or studs, and has a green tattoo on his right arm along with three piercings in each ear. Outside of school, influenced by Rin, Haru’s style leans toward punk fashion, favoring mostly black clothing, tight jeans, tank tops, chains, and white socks.

Personality

Haru has two contrasting personalities, “White” and “Black.” When he is in his “White” state, he is calm, kind, and laid-back, often speaking in a gentle and respectful tone. He typically maintains a straight-faced, composed demeanor and handles most situations with quiet maturity. However, when he switches to “Black Haru,” he becomes the complete opposite: violent, rude, foul-mouthed, loud, and short-tempered, often acting recklessly or teasingly perverted.

Despite his split personality, Haru is deeply loyal and caring toward those he loves, especially Yuki, Rin, Kisa, Hiro, and even Tohru. He often takes on an older brother role among the younger Zodiac members, offering them comfort and support when needed. While usually mature and observant, Haru has a playful side as well, shown when he whispered to Tohru in a way that embarrassed her and Yuki, though his intention was simply to help Yuki open up.

Haru’s “Black” side tends to surface when he is provoked or emotionally overwhelmed, such as when Kyo refuses to fight him or when Rin leaves him. It is revealed that “Black Haru” was born as a defense mechanism to cope with the ridicule and insults he endured as a child, allowing him to release his pent-up frustration while protecting his softer, more gentle self.

History

Ever since he was young, Haru had been ridiculed by the adults in the Sohma “inside” for being stupid, largely because of the story of how the Rat took advantage of the Ox to become first in the Zodiac. As a result, Haru subconsciously saw Yuki as an enemy and developed a deep-seated hatred toward him. Constantly being insulted and demeaned by the adults made Haru extremely irritable, eventually bringing out his black persona, which caused his parents great concern. They encouraged him to take up martial arts to relieve his stress. Although Haru enjoyed the practice and became friends with Kyo Sohma, it failed to ease his frustrations, as he still faced ridicule there.

Two years before the start of the series, Haru and Rin fell in love and consummated their relationship. Haru knew the potential consequences but pursued Rin nonetheless. When Akito discovered their relationship, Rin convinced Akito that she had seduced Haru. In retaliation, Akito pushed Rin from a second-story window, leaving her hospitalized. Haru, unaware of the full circumstances, was distressed. During this time, Haru grew increasingly concerned about Yuki’s suffering while living in the Sohma main house. He pleaded with Shigure Sohma to let Yuki live in his own home. Shigure agreed, on the condition that Haru address him as “sensei.”

Trivia

  • According to the officialFruits Basket Character Book:
    • Haru used to dress like Kyo, but Rin’s influence made him adopt a flashier look. Now he dresses the way he does because he likes it.
    • Haru has a lot of clothes and spends money on his wardrobe “shamelessly”. He is especially fond of leather, so he enjoys winter.
    • Haru has no sense of direction, as he once became lost for three days in another town while looking for Kyo in order to challenge him. And when he was young, he managed to get lost on the way to the bathroom and needed Kyo’s help to find it.
    • Apparently, Haru annoys Kyo as much as Momiji does.
  • Hatsuharu’s appearance differs between the manga and the anime adaptions:
    • The manga and 2019 anime depict Hatsuharu with brown eyes. The 2001 anime depicts him with grey eyes.
  • The manga and 2019 anime depict Hatsuharu with three piercings on each ear. The 2001 anime depict him with two piercings on each ear.
  • In an author’s note,Natsuki Takayamentions that the various jewelry and leather accessories he very often wears are made by himself.
  • Natsuki Takaya derived his name from the first month, hatsuharu meaning “new year” or “early spring,” which is the month of the Ox, of the traditional Japanese calendar, though his name is written with different kanji than the month.
  • In an author’s note, it is mentioned that Haru is caught up by strange things, which is proven when it is mentioned that Haru was going to confess his love to Rin when his height surpassed hers.
    • This is also proven when he is talking to Rin about how the teachers in his middle school didn’t like his attitude or his hair, so he had no choice but to pierce his ears.
  • When questioned, Haru shows the student council president that his hair color is indeed natural. The exact method of how he does this is never truly revealed, but it’s implied that it was highly lewd. There are some implications in the manga that he revealed his pubic hair to prove his hair was natural.
  • Momiji mentions that Haru used to get bullied over his unnatural hair color, but occasionally, he would turn black and beat up the people who make fun of his hair.
  • Yuki mentions that Black Haru is “much worse than Kagura”.
  • Haru appears to have some strange habits, such as sticking out his arms in a “T-pose” and grabbing on to Yuki whenever he sees him.
  • In the 2019 dub of the Fruits Basket anime, everyone refers to the angry version of him as “Dark Haru” instead of “Black Haru.”
