Did You Know?

Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Yūki Yoshino

Hisako Arato (新戸緋沙子, Arato Hisako) is a 92nd Tōtsuki Generation student and serves as the secretary and close aide to Erina Nakiri, the former 10th seat of the Elite Ten Council and current director of Tōtsuki Culinary Academy.

In ancient Chinese imperial courts, the emperor had a dietician who provided him with medicinal cooking. In my case, the Emperor is Erina-sama.

Appearance

Yūki is a petite girl with teal eyes and amber hair, which she ties into two neat buns on either side of her head. When her hair is down, it reaches just below her neck, with bangs that frame her eyes. Four months later, her hair grows noticeably longer.

She typically wears the standard Tōtsuki Academy uniform suited to the season, and when cooking, she dons a white chef’s outfit with black trimmings. During the 43rd Annual Tōtsuki Autumn Election Semifinals, Yūki showed her school spirit by wearing a happi coat over her summer uniform while cheering enthusiastically for Megumi.

Yuki in Anime

Yūki is a lively, cheerful, and mischievous girl known for her bright and contagious smile. Though she often comes across as playful and innocent, she’s highly competitive and eager to prove her skills when challenged. She enjoys teasing others and gossiping, especially when it involves romance, and has a habit of affectionately adding “cchi” to the names of people she likes, such as “Nikumi cchi” or “Erina cchi.” Yūki is highly expressive and emotional, easily shifting between moods whether it’s excitement, anger, or sadness.

Despite her playful personality, Yūki is deeply loyal and cares greatly for her friends. Her main goal is to keep the 92nd Generation residents of the Polar Star Dormitory close throughout their time at Tōtsuki. Her strong sense of camaraderie shows in moments like when she slapped Sōma for risking expulsion in a reckless Shokugeki to save Megumi, expressing both anger and worry. Though she’s confident and energetic, Yūki is also somewhat self-conscious about her petite figure and often feels envious of her more well-developed female classmates.

Plot

At the 92nd Tōtsuki Generation Orientation Ceremony, Yūki Yoshino attends alongside her dormmates Ryōko Sakaki and Megumi Tadokoro. Inspired by Senzaemon Nakiri’s speech and the enthusiasm of transfer student Sōma Yukihira, Yūki vows to give her best at the academy. Later, she and Ryōko join Sōma in the Polar Star Dormitory, where his unexpected cooking skills quickly earn him a place among them. Despite her playful personality, Yūki shows great admiration for Sōma’s talent and is inspired to improve her own cooking.

Yūki’s determination is tested during the grueling Tōtsuki Friendship and Rapport Training Camp. Along with her fellow Polar Star residents, she faces exhausting challenges under strict judges and professional chefs. Although she struggles with the workload, Yūki pushes through every obstacle, motivated by her desire to keep the Polar Star group together. When Sōma risks expulsion to defend Megumi, Yūki’s worry and frustration show her deep loyalty to her friends.

As the semester progresses, Yūki competes in the prestigious 43rd Annual Tōtsuki Autumn Election. Despite intense competition, she impresses the judges with her Duck Cutlet Curry and earns praise for her creativity, though she falls short of qualifying for the main tournament. Though disappointed, Yūki celebrates her friends’ victories and remains a cheerful presence, supporting Megumi, Sōma, and the others with unwavering enthusiasm.

When the tournament reaches its final stages, Yūki and the Polar Star residents rally together to cheer for their friends in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals. She watches anxiously as Sōma faces formidable opponents, showing both courage and skill. Through every victory and setback, Yūki’s optimism and sense of camaraderie highlight her role as the heart of Polar Star.

Etymology

  • The name Yūki means “permanence” (悠) () and “princess, young lady of noble birth” (姫) (ki).
  • Yūki’s surname Yoshino means “lucky, good” (吉) (yoshi) and “field, wilderness” (野) (no), which can be roughly translated as “good fortune of the plains” and it is a reference to her specialty in wild game.
