All For One

All For One (オール・フォー・ワン, Ōru Fō Wan), born Zen Shigaraki (死柄木全, Shigaraki Zen), serves as the central and most enduring antagonist of My Hero Academia. A figure shrouded in power and mystery, he was the founder and shadowy benefactor of the League of Villains, as well as the archenemy of All Might, Japan’s former Symbol of Peace.

Once feared as the most dominant villain in Japan’s history, All For One sought to seize One For All, the only Quirk capable of opposing his own, and in doing so, complete the dark legacy that began with his younger twin brother, the Quirk’s original bearer. He raised Tomura Shigaraki as both his protégé and eventual vessel, molding him through manipulation and cruelty to inherit not just his power but his very consciousness, in a grand design to remake the world under his reign as a self-styled “demon lord.”

After suffering defeat and imprisonment in Tartarus, All For One escaped to resume his long pursuit of domination, aiming to annihilate One For All’s ninth successor, Izuku Midoriya. In the climactic Final War, he resorted to using a Rewind Drug to restore his body to its prime, even as it doomed him to gradual erasure. Though his physical form ultimately vanished, his will lingered through Tomura until both were finally destroyed, marking the true end of All For One’s century-spanning tyranny.

If it’s freedom you desire, then submit to me, my brethren. And bear witness, by my side. This impending void era will give rise to a more perfect demon lord. This will be the story of how I became the greatest demon lord of all!

Appearance

After being gravely wounded by All Might years earlier, All For One’s face became a mass of thick scar tissue that stretched from above his upper lip and covered his entire head and the back of his neck. As a result, he lacked visible facial features such as a nose, ears, hair, and eyes, though the faint outlines of his eye sockets remained. Rendered blind, he relied on an Infrared Quirk to perceive his surroundings, detecting vibrations and movements in a manner similar to echolocation. Each of his palms had a small hole through which he could steal and transfer Quirks, the core of his terrifying power.

His usual attire consisted of a dark suit over a white dress shirt. During the Kamino Incident, when he emerged from hiding, he wore a navy blue, skull shaped gas mask with sharp, angular tubing, along with a wide, collar like life support device around his neck connected by several pipes that helped him breathe.

In his earlier years, All For One was an imposing figure, tall, broad shouldered, and powerfully built, with short white hair and pale, emotionless eyes. When interacting with the Shimura family, however, he appeared in a more refined form, dressed in a formal suit and hat. His face was rounder and softer, with a seemingly kind expression and closed eyes, suggesting he altered his appearance with a Quirk to appear more approachable.

Personality

All For One was a subtle and sadistic manipulator who ruled from the shadows, taking pleasure in using others before discarding them. In the early days of Quirks, he exploited the chaos by offering people anything they desired, power, purpose, or even peace, in exchange for loyalty. He claimed to bring order to a crumbling world, but his true intent was domination. All For One took Quirks from those who did not want them and granted them to those who did, building an army of followers bound by greed and dependence. Once they outlived their usefulness, he cast them aside without hesitation, ensuring absolute control through fear and deception.

Driven by megalomania, All For One viewed himself as a godlike being, likening his existence to that of a Demon Lord from childhood comic books. He saw others as inferior, mere tools to further his ambition. Despite claiming to care only for his younger brother Yoichi, he treated him as a possession rather than family, abusing him for his weakness and rejecting his ideals of justice. All For One’s ultimate goal was to rule over humanity as an all powerful evil, a living embodiment of the darkness he once admired in fiction. Yet, in his pursuit of control, he created his greatest rival, the One For All Quirk, born from the brother he sought to dominate, and with it, generations of heroes dedicated to ending his reign.

His cruelty extended to those he mentored. When he found the young and broken Tomura Shigaraki, All For One appeared as a benevolent savior, nurturing him and even giving him his surname. But beneath the facade of care, he saw Tomura only as a vessel, a future body to inherit his power. He manipulated the boy’s trauma, fueling his hatred and molding him into a weapon to destroy the legacy of One For All. All For One’s twisted sense of pride showed through his delight in Tomura’s progress, even as he stripped away his protege’s free will. His influence was so deep that he could control Tomura’s body during battle, proving that every act of kindness was merely a step in his plan for immortality.

In the end, the so called Demon Lord’s arrogance led to his downfall. As the Final War unfolded, the cracks in his composure began to show. The endless resistance of heroes, the influence of Tomura’s will, and the effects of the Rewind Drug left him desperate and unstable. He raged at those who defied him, unable to accept that his control was slipping away. When death finally came, All For One was reduced to fear and tears, realizing that his desire to be remembered stemmed from loneliness, not strength. Even in his vestige’s final moments, he admitted that ruling the world without Yoichi was meaningless. For all his power, cruelty, and pride, All For One died not as a Demon Lord, but as a hollow man chasing the love of a brother he could never truly possess.

Abilities and Skills

All For One was an ancient and powerful villain who ruled Japan from the shadows for over a century. He possessed the Quirk All For One, which allowed him to steal and use the powers of others. Despite his unmatched might, he could never take the Quirk One For All, a power he accidentally created. Generations of heroes inherited One For All to oppose him, culminating in his long and brutal rivalry with All Might. Their climactic battle left All For One critically injured and reliant on a life-support system, marking the first major blow to his reign of terror.

Even after his defeat, All For One remained a formidable threat. From his prison cell, he continued to manipulate events, nurturing Tomura Shigaraki as his successor. His intellect and vast knowledge of Quirks made him nearly unstoppable, allowing him to predict and counter his enemies with terrifying precision. When he escaped from Tartarus Prison, he led a renewed assault against the heroes, proving that even age and injury could not diminish his influence or power.

In the Final War, All For One’s power surged once again after using a reverse-engineered Rewind drug that restored his youth. He overwhelmed top heroes like Endeavor, Hawks, and Best Jeanist, combining his stolen Quirks into devastating attacks. However, the Rewind effect also accelerated his regression, gradually reverting his body to that of a child, then an infant, and finally nothingness. His arrogance and obsession with control ultimately brought about his end.

Though feared as the Symbol of Evil, All For One was defined by his loneliness and desire for dominance. His cruelty, manipulation, and lust for power left behind a legacy of destruction. In the end, he was undone not by weakness, but by the will of those who stood against him. The heroes he sought to crush proved that unity and hope could triumph over even the darkest evil.

Trivia

    • All For One’s given name, Zen, contains the kanji for “all” ( zen?), which fits both his Quirk and his ambitious personality.
      • His surname, Shigaraki, contains the kanji for “death” ( shi?), “handle, grip” ( gara?), and “tree” ( ki?).
        • All For One came up with his last name after hearing a story about the “Shigaraki Tanuki”, a prostitute working in a redlight district who resembled the animal due to her body shape from her ongoing pregnancy and the fact that she always stood completely still waiting for customers. Because of this, passerbys described her as a shigaraki yaki tanuki (信楽焼,?), a pottery statue made to look like the namesake animal, and she would later be found dead by a river. All For One grew fond of the story from how monster-like the woman’s description and treatment was, which motivated him to make it part of his full name, though spelled with different kanji.[8] Ironically, his birth mother was a prostitute who matched this description, unbeknownst to him.
          • The real-life Japanese town of Shigaraki is well known for its production of clay tanuki statues, with a giant one located at its very own Shigaraki Station.
    • All For One’s rankings in the Popularity Polls are as following:
      • Ranked 49th in the second Popularity Poll.
      • Ranked 69th in the fourth Popularity Poll.
      • Ranked 40th in the fifth Popularity Poll.
    • All For One’s black, ornate mask and life-support system were possibly inspired by the character of Darth Vader, the antagonist of the first Star Wars trilogy and recurring element of the franchise as a whole, who is known for wearing an iconic life-support armor.
      • The black skull-like shape resembles that of the Batman villain Black Mask.
      • He also resembled the Superman villain Ultra-Humanite, one of the first recurring villains in comics with a genius intellect and the ability to transfer his mind into other beings, as he does when his Quirk was transferred into Tomura.
      • His status as All Might’s arch nemesis, genius intellect, baldness, and wearing of a suit also made him similar to Lex Luthor, Superman’s arch-enemy.
    • All For One was one of the oldest known individuals in the series, being born in the era when Quirks first manifested, though it is unclear whether or not he was older than Doctor Garaki.
    • All For One and Tomura have possessed the most Quirks of any character in the series, as Tomura was able to use all of the Quirks that All For One had stolen after gaining access to the All For One Quirk. However, between Tomura losing several Quirks after they were destroyed by New Order, and All For One transferring some of his to others, it’s unknown who had the most by the time of their deaths.
      • However, All For One has used the most Quirks on-screen (counting only those that he has been shown using himself), with at least 42 known.
    • All For One was a dark parallel to All Might.
      • All For One had once been Japan’s worst villain, just like All Might was Japan’s greatest hero. This was further emphasized by All For One bearing the epithet “Symbol of Evil”, contrasting with All Might’s epithet “Symbol of Peace”.
      • Both also passed on their respective Quirks All For One and One For All to their successors, with the intention of them improving their usage and taking up their former titles as the “Symbol of Peace” and “Symbol of Evil”, though All For One still has a copy of his Quirk.
    • All For One’s relationship with Tomura was a dark mirror to All Might’s relationship with Izuku. Like All Might, All For One believed that Tomura will not only become a great successor of the League of Villains, but a great villain in general. He also acknowledged Tomura’s childish nature, leaving room for him to teach him how to become a villain. He also showed a caring side for him, as he assured that Tomura would always be able to learn from his failures.
      • Because of this, Tomura looked up to All For One as his ideal mentor and inspirational figure, like how Izuku looks up to All Might.
      • Despite his childlike behavior, it’s implied that All For One admired Tomura’s personality in an odd way, similar to All Might’s own admiration of Izuku’s personality. When he defeated Best Jeanist, he refused to take away his Quirk, as he believed that “it wouldn’t fit Tomura’s personality”.
      • The biggest difference between the two is that while All Might truly wants Izuku Midoriya to be his successor, All For One had selfish reasons for grooming Tomura as his successor. Over the decades, All For One found it increasingly burdensome to store Quirks due to the Quirk Singularity and his body was extremely damaged following his first battle with All Might, and thus needed a more superior and healthy body to properly contain advanced Quirks and regain his strength. That was the reason he had Tomura undergo the body augmentation surgery and transplanted the original All For One Quirk onto him, so that he could take over the younger villain’s body. The other reason was that Tomura’s hatred would allow All For One to steal One For All, which would have otherwise been impossible.
      • Ironically, while Tomura grew to be the strongest villain in the world with strength exceeding even that of his master, All For One became more reckless and insecure upon using the Rewind Drug, causing his behavior to resemble Tomura’s in the latter’s early stages.
    • While he was imprisoned in Tartarus, his prisoner number was 1541.
    • According to All For One’s Ultra Analysis profile:
      • The prison staff at Tartarus occasionally saw All For One smiling in his cell, as though he was recalling something.
      • His personality is described as “unsettling”.
    • All For One was the first known villain to name himself after his Quirk: the latters are Kai Chisaki and Hari Kurono, and the thirds are Chojuro Kon and Kiruka Hasaki.
    • All For One’s background and history with Yoichi seem to have been inspired by the mythological story of the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, with the two fulfilling these respective roles as brothers and the “founders” of superhuman society, analogous with the founding of the famous city. While no wolf or shepherd came to care for the twins like in the story, All For One did suck the remaining Quirk and nutrients from his mother’s fresh corpse by a river as a reference to the famous portion where the Roman twins suckled from a she-wolf after being rescued from the Tiber. Romulus eventually wound up ruling Rome as its first king after murdering Remus (in some versions of the story at least). This matches the events where All For One kills Yoichi and goes on to reign over the chaotic century of super-powered society that formed, only forced to retreat into the shadows after his first defeat at All Might’s hands.
      • All For One’s own short-cropped hair seems similar to the initial Roman emperor, Augustus, compared to the more stylish/shaggy hairstyles Horikoshi normally draws for his characters.
    • As of the Volume 40 cover sketch:
      • The young form depicted in the cover is between the ages of 15 and 16.
      • He grew up in the slums.
      • His eye color is white.
    • All For One’s English voice actor as a teenager, Ryan Negrón, also voices Master Driller.
