Raphtalia

Raphtalia (ラフタリア, Rafutaria) is the main heroine and deuteragonist of The Rising of the Shield Hero series.

She is the first true companion of the Shield Hero, Naofumi Iwatani. Though she was initially purchased as a slave, Naofumi treated her with kindness and respect, allowing her to heal both physically and emotionally. Over time, their bond deepened, and Raphtalia grew into a brave and loyal warrior who fights alongside him.

Later in the story, Raphtalia travels to another world, where she is chosen as the wielder of the Vassal Katana, earning the title of Katana Hero (刀の勇者, Katana no Yuusha). Her strength, compassion, and leadership eventually lead her to become the Heavenly Emperor of Q’ten Lo after she overthrows the corrupt ruler, symbolizing her rise from a frightened child to a noble and powerful hero.

“Please, believe me… You are the great Shield Hero, and I am your sword.”

Appearance

Raphtalia is a young demi-human girl with auburn hair and pinkish-red eyes that reflect her gentle yet determined nature. Two long strands of her hair frame her face, while her fluffy tanuki ears and bushy tail show her raccoon-like ancestry. She inherited her father’s lean build, though years of traveling and fighting have made her slightly muscular and athletic.

When she first appeared, Raphtalia was a frail and sickly child wearing tattered clothes, her body weakened by illness and hardship. After being rescued and cared for by the Shield Hero, Naofumi, her health improved, and she began training as his companion. As she leveled up, her demi-human nature caused her to grow rapidly into a young woman with a graceful figure. Her outfit changed to practical adventurer gear, a leather breastplate, pauldron, and a red-and-black dress layered over a white frilled one.

Raphtalia and Naofumi

When Raphtalia is first introduced, she is a timid and frail young girl who has suffered immense trauma. After her village was destroyed and her family killed during the Waves, she was captured by Melromarc’s knights and sold to a cruel noble. Abused and neglected, she fell gravely ill and was eventually sold again, this time expected to die soon. Her nights were plagued with nightmares, and by the time Naofumi Iwatani purchased her, she was emotionally broken and physically weak, barely holding on to life.

To her surprise, Naofumi did not treat her as a slave, but as a companion. He nursed her back to health, fed her, and gave her proper clothes and protection despite his own misfortune. Through his kindness, Raphtalia slowly regained her confidence and sense of self-worth. Her turning point came when she faced the Two-Headed Dog, a monster that reminded her of the creature that killed her parents. Though paralyzed by fear, Naofumi’s encouragement gave her the strength to overcome her trauma and defeat the beast. From that day on, she swore loyalty to Naofumi, vowing to become his sword and protect others from suffering the same pain she once endured.

Raphtalia’s growth continued as she matured into a skilled and dependable warrior. When she was separated from Naofumi in Glass’s World after a trap set by Kyo, she showed her independence by leading a group of imprisoned heroes in a daring escape. During this time, she was chosen as the wielder of the Vassal Katana, which removed her slave crest permanently. Though she initially worried that losing the crest meant losing her connection to Naofumi, their reunion proved that their bond was far deeper than any mark. Upon returning to her world, Raphtalia faced her homeland of Q’ten Lo, eventually becoming its new leader after standing up to its corrupt rulers. Her courage and sense of justice made her a symbol of strength and compassion to those around her.

Despite her painful past, Raphtalia remains warm-hearted and selfless. She supports Naofumi through his darkest moments and risks her life to protect him and their allies. Though she hides her romantic feelings for Naofumi out of respect for his focus on the Waves, her love for him is evident in her loyalty and care. Even when she disagrees with his actions or feels jealous of his affection toward others, she continues to stand by his side, hoping he will someday see himself as the hero she believes him to be. Through her kindness, bravery, and unwavering faith, Raphtalia embodies the heart and spirit of the Shield Hero’s journey.

Raphtalia talking to her father

Raphtalia was born and raised in a small coastal village in Melromarc, where she lived peacefully with her parents until the age of ten. Her childhood came to a tragic end when the First Wave of Calamity struck, destroying her home and killing many of its residents. With their protector, Sadeena, away at sea, Raphtalia’s family was left defenseless. In a desperate attempt to survive, her parents tried to flee toward the ocean, but they were cornered by the Wave’s monstrous boss, Cerberus. In a final act of love and sacrifice, they pushed Raphtalia into the sea to save her while they distracted the beast, dying moments later. Helpless, Raphtalia could only watch as her parents were devoured, leaving her traumatized and alone.

When Raphtalia washed ashore, the Wave had already passed. She searched for her parents, only to confirm their deaths. Heartbroken, she buried them and built their graves in the village. Determined to carry on, she gathered the remaining survivors and tried to rebuild their home. For a brief time, they found a fragile peace as they worked together to restore their lives. That peace, however, was shattered when Melromarc knights arrived. Viewing demi-humans as inferior, they slaughtered the remaining adults and captured the children to sell them into slavery. Raphtalia’s home was once protected by the Governor of Seaetto, a noble who believed in equality between humans and demi-humans and who served as the Queen’s right hand. But after his death during the First Wave, human supremacists rose to power, bringing ruin to Seaetto and ending its brief era of coexistence.

Enslaved and stripped of her freedom, Raphtalia was sold alongside her friends to Idol Rabier, a sadistic noble who delighted in torturing demi-human children. Under his cruelty, she witnessed unimaginable horrors, including the death of her closest friend, Rifana. The loss broke her completely, leaving her emotionally shattered and haunted by nightmares. As her health deteriorated and her trauma deepened, she was deemed worthless and sold multiple times. Her constant crying and the same illness that had claimed Rifana’s life eventually brought her to the brink of death.

At last, Raphtalia was brought to the slave market in Melromarc’s capital, where she was purchased by Naofumi Iwatani, the Shield Hero. Unlike her previous masters, Naofumi treated her with kindness and care, nursing her back to health and restoring her sense of dignity. Through their journey together, she grew stronger, both physically and emotionally, and eventually rose beyond her past to become the Vassal Katana Hero. What began as a life of suffering and despair transformed into one of courage, loyalty, and hope—all because of the bond she formed with Naofumi.
