Yuri Briar

Yuri Briaris a recurring character and serves as the secondary antagonist in the SPY x FAMILY series. He is the younger brother of Yor Forger and a dedicated twenty-year-old agent working for Ostania’s State Security Service (SSS). Despite his high-stakes role, Yuri keeps his true occupation a secret from his sister, maintaining the facade of a typical civil servant working at the foreign ministry.

Unlike you, I would never do anything to cause my sister pain
— Yuri Briar

Appearance

Yuri is a very handsome, elegant, and fairly tall young man in his early twenties, with a slender and straight frame. His straight black hair features uneven bangs and a small, subtle cowlick at the top. Like his sister Yor, he has distinctive upturned red eyes. He was once described as “cute” by Millie Myers after Yor showed her a picture of him.

While on duty, Yuri wears the standard uniform of the SSS. For undercover missions, he switches to a more casual look—donning a blue bomber jacket over a white shirt, paired with black pants, brown lace-up boots, and a tan-colored cap. Off the clock, Yuri opts for a more refined style: a light brown trench coat layered over an all-black suit, complemented by a white long-sleeved shirt and a dark blue tie. He completes the look with black gloves, black shoes, and typically wears a black wristwatch on his left wrist during these occasions.

Personality

Yuri has a noticeable sister complex. Even from a young age, he did everything he could to earn Yor’s praise and affection. This attachment likely stems from the early loss of their mother, which led Yuri to see Yor as both a sister and a mother figure. The mere thought of Yor hating him or falling into despair causes him deep distress. As a child, he hated himself for being unable to help her while she worked hard to provide for them. That guilt drove him to study intensely, determined to become someone useful to her. Thanks to his intelligence and dedication, he eventually secured a job at the foreign ministry, and soon after, joined the Secret Police.

On the job, Yuri presents a calm and charming demeanor, even when interrogating suspects. He genuinely believes he is serving his country, but his motivation largely revolves around Yor—wanting to shield her from traitors and “scumbags” who, in his eyes, aren’t worthy of breathing the same air as her. His love for his sister is matched by his fierce patriotism. When discussing enemies like “Twilight,” Yuri quickly drops his cheerful façade, becoming irritable and intensely serious.

Background

Yuri Briar is a character from the Spy x Family anime. He grew up in poverty with his older sister Yor after their parents died in a war between Ostania and Westalis. Yor took on the role of caregiver, even becoming an assassin to support them. This difficult childhood created a strong emotional bond between them. Yuri deeply admired Yor and felt helpless being unable to help her, so he studied hard to repay her care. Over time, his feelings grew into a sister complex, where he constantly seeks her approval and attention.

As an adult, Yuri works as a diplomat in Berlint before secretly joining the State Security Service, SSS. He acts as a recurring antagonist in the story, obsessed with catching the spy known as Twilight, who is actually Loid Forger, Yor’s fake husband. Yuri distrusts Loid and sees him as unworthy of Yor, which fuels his hostility. His deep attachment to his sister drives many of his actions, including reckless behavior when drinking. His sister complex remains a key part of his character throughout the series.

Yuri and Yor

Yor Briar
Yor is Yuri’s older sister. After losing both of their parents at a young age, Yor took on the responsibility of raising Yuri during their childhood, despite the hardships of living in poverty. Because of this, Yuri developed a strong sister complex and is fiercely protective of her, even to the point of suspecting her husband of being an enemy spy. He is highly possessive, always wanting to spend time with Yor whenever possible and becoming irritated when others are around, especially Loid and Anya. Yuri’s attachment goes as far as keeping pictures of Yor in his workplace locker and having them framed on the walls of his apartment. Yor, who has visited his apartment, doesn’t seem to mind and simply views his obsession as part of his eccentric personality.

Yuri also learns that Yor felt lonely after he moved away, but she no longer feels that way thanks to the new friends and family in her life. In contrast, Yuri admits to feeling lonely and suggests returning to their hometown. Yor declines, explaining that she has moved on and is happy where she is now. After they part ways, Yuri begins to reflect on their past and his deep desire to always see his sister smile. He starts to feel distant from her and initially blames the Forgers. Eventually, he realizes the distance is also caused by the secrets he keeps from her.

Yuri is unaware of Yor’s secret life as an assassin. Similarly, he hides his own job in the Secret Police, telling her instead that he works as a diplomat for the Foreign Ministry of Affairs.

Etymology

The name “Yuri” is an alternate spelling of the name Yury, which is a Slavic form of the name “George.”

Trivia

    • In early design concepts, Yuri was originally just Yor’s brother. He was not intended to be in the SSS, as the aspect of a Secret Police officer pursuing Twilight was a separate character. However, due to not wanting to introduce too many characters, Tatsuya Endo combined the two characters when working on Chapter 10.
    • Yuri is popular with girls because of his appearance, but they tend to lose interest once they get to know his personality. As a government employee, he is officially only required to work eight to nine hours a day, with the occasional stakeout. However, when he is on a mission, Yuri sometimes works without taking any time off. It is noted that, since he occasionally has time to visit the Forgers, he does not appear to be as overworked as Loid.
    • In terms of combat ability, Yuri has a tougher defense than Loid, though his overall combat skills are considered to be roughly on par with Nightfall.
