Flare Arlgrande Jioral

Flare Arlgrande Jioral (フレア・アールグランデ・ジオラル, Furea Ārugurande Jioraru), later known as Freia (フレイア), is a central character in Redo of Healer (Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi). She is introduced as the princess of the Jioral Kingdom and the designated Magic Hero. Over the course of the story, she becomes the companion, lover, and slave of the protagonist, Keyaruga. As the series’ main heroine, she plays a pivotal role in both the political and emotional developments of the narrative.

Flare Arlgrande Jioral’s Appearance in Anime

Publicly, Flare presents herself as a graceful, kind, and honest woman, admired for her beauty and charm. In truth, she is self-centered, arrogant, and sadistic, regarding herself as superior to others. She openly belittles Keyaru, dismissing him as a mere tool with little value beyond his healing abilities. Flare subjects him to physical abuse, humiliation, and forced dependence on addictive drugs, using cruelty as a means of control.

Her arrogance masks a cowardly nature. When overpowered by Keyaru, she attempts to bargain for her life with offers of wealth, status, or companionship. Even at her most vulnerable, she continues to insult his low birth, reinforcing her elitism. Despite her talent for manipulation and her ability to maintain a benevolent façade before the kingdom, she is regarded by her own sister as useful only as a weapon of mass destruction.

Following Keyaru’s erasure of her memories, Flare takes on the new identity of Freia. In this state, she becomes wholly devoted to him, displaying loyalty, affection, and genuine kindness absent from her former self. Freia is depicted as compassionate, treating Setsuna with friendship and showing empathy toward the oppressed, particularly demi-humans mistreated by her kingdom. She expresses a strong sense of justice, often urging intervention against abuses of power, though Keyaru views this as hypocritical given her former nature.

Freia retains her magical knowledge but, due to memory loss, loses the practical experience needed to wield it effectively, requiring Keyaru’s guidance. Despite her apparent naivety, remnants of her manipulative skills remain. She is capable of deception and impersonation, convincingly reverting to her former Flare persona when necessary. Through this, she has successfully swayed individuals such as Kureha Clyret and village communities against the Jioral Kingdom by exposing its corruption.

Appearance

Flare is depicted as a beautiful young woman with long, peach-pink hair that reaches her hips, styled with bangs swept to the left. Prior to Keyaru’s intervention, her eyes were green; following the alteration of her appearance, they became blue. Her striking looks, combined with her outwardly graceful demeanor, often attract admiration and infatuation from those around her.

As Freia, she maintains the same general features but with a softer, more approachable presence that reflects her altered personality.

In various adaptations, her portrayal differs. The light novel and manga include depictions of her under degrading circumstances, such as wearing a collar and canine accessories as part of her enslavement to Keyaru. The anime adaptation presents an even more explicit version of this imagery, showing her with a collar, leash, and stylized animal features. These scenes emphasize the transformation of her status from royal princess to submissive companion under Keyaru’s control.

Background

Flare Arlgrande Jioral was born as the illegitimate daughter of the King of Jioral and a prostitute. At the age of ten, she and her mother were brought into the royal household, where they faced harassment and mistreatment from the king’s other wives and children. Her mother later died, leaving Flare to endure life in the palace alone.

At the age of fourteen, Flare awakened as the Magic Hero, dramatically altering her status within the royal family. Her succession rights shifted from the lowest to the highest, granting her authority and power she had previously lacked. In response to her mother’s mistreatment, she exiled the other royal children, acting out of resentment and fear of losing her elevated position. This fear of returning to a commoner’s life fueled her obsession with maintaining royal privileges and distancing herself from her past.

Despite her attachment to her late mother, Flare discarded her mother’s harp, a symbol of happier memories, as part of her rejection of her former life. This act reflects both her determination to preserve her royal identity and the emotional cost of severing ties with her origins.

Relationships

Norn Clatalissa Jioral
Flare initially shared a close relationship with her younger sister Norn, but this bond weakened after Flare gained recognition as a hero. She grew resentful of Norn’s sarcastic and condescending behavior, though occasional moments of care are shown in flashbacks. Norn, in turn, sought validation and attention from her older sister, but her efforts were often dismissed.

Keyaru
Upon discovering the extent of Keyaru’s healing powers, Flare exploited him, drugging him into submission and using him as a tool for both practical and sadistic purposes. This mistreatment became the catalyst for Keyaru’s eventual transformation and desire for revenge. Once Keyaru gained the strength to retaliate, Flare became the first target of his vengeance. He erased her memory, altered her appearance, and renamed her Freia, convincing her that she was both his companion and lover, while binding her to him as a slave. As Freia, she demonstrates loyalty and affection toward Keyaru, often displaying jealousy toward others, particularly Setsuna. Despite the nature of their relationship, she now follows him devotedly.

Setsuna
While Flare had previously looked down on demi-humans, Freia befriends Setsuna following her memory alteration. The two occasionally compete for Keyaru’s affection, reflecting Setsuna’s clear attachment to him. Outside of this rivalry, they work effectively together, with Setsuna acting as Freia’s combat partner and bodyguard. Setsuna also instructs Freia in physical training, though Freia often complains about the harshness of her methods and seeks comfort from Keyaru afterward.

Etymology

The name Flare (フレア) is written identically to the powerful offensive spell “Flare” featured in the Final Fantasy video game series, contrasting with the protagonist Keyaru, whose name is associated with healing magic.

Her alternate name, Freia (フレイア), may derive from Freyja, the Norse goddess of love, beauty, and war. This mythological connection extends to her weapon and techniques: her staff Vanargand references one of the alternative names of Fenrir, the wolf destined to slay Odin, while her ultimate attack Mjolnir takes its name from the hammer wielded by the Norse god Thor.
