Anos Voldigoad (アノス・ヴォルディゴード, Anosu Vorudigōdo) is the main protagonist of The Misfit of Demon King Academy. Known in the Mythical Age as the Demon King of Tyranny (暴虐の魔王, Bōgyaku no Maō), Anos gained infamy for his overwhelming power and merciless treatment of his enemies. In order to end centuries of war and bring peace, he sacrificed his life to divide the world into four realms—human, spirit, god, and demon. Two thousand years later, he reincarnates into the Magical Age and enrolls at the Demon King Academy, where his immense power leads others to label him a “misfit.” Despite this, he seeks to reclaim his identity while confronting those who distorted history during his absence.

History

Anos Voldigoad’s Appearance in Anime
Two thousand years prior to the events of the series, Anos Voldigoad was born under tragic circumstances: his mother was killed by humans while pregnant, and he was delivered from her corpse, an event that left a lasting impression on him. At that time, the demon realm of Dilhade was fractured by rivalries among the Four Evil Kings, Sorcerer King Bomiras, and numerous other demon lords. Humans and spirits exploited this disunity, deliberately sowing discord to prevent the demons from uniting and upsetting the balance of war.
Following Bomiras’s disappearance, conflict engulfed the Midhaze territory. Anos emerged during this period, establishing Castle Delsgade as a symbol of power and fear. Gathering followers who wished to join him, he subdued rival demons and resisted human attacks, gradually consolidating control. Though he protected many, his ruthless methods and overwhelming strength earned him the title Demon King of Tyranny. Anos accepted this reputation, recognizing that fear discouraged opposition and allowed him to safeguard his people. Nevertheless, he faced continual resistance from rebellious demons, hostile humans, allied spirits, and even gods who sought to eliminate him as a threat to order.
During the Great War, Anos frequently clashed with the Hero Kanon. Although Kanon was able to wound Anos and withstand his immense strength, Anos destroyed six of Kanon’s seven sources, forcing him to retreat. Despite their repeated battles, both came to respect each other’s strength and conviction.
Eventually, Anos grew weary of the endless cycle of violence. To establish lasting peace, he proposed separating the four races—humans, demons, spirits, and gods into distinct realms. He forged an agreement with Kanon, the Great Spirit Reno, and the Goddess of Creation Militia, and offered his own life to supply the magic necessary for the plan. Before reincarnating, he vowed to return after two thousand years.
In the present era, Anos was reborn to Izabella and Gusta, though his reincarnation was nearly cut short. While still in the womb, his heartbeat stopped, and doctors were unable to intervene. Izabella, however, prayed daily for her child’s survival, her devotion eventually reviving the unborn child. Anos later believed that his mother’s unyielding willpower drew his reincarnated source to her, ensuring his rebirth into the Magical Age.
Appearance
Anos Voldigoad is portrayed as a tall, well-built young man with long black hair that frames his face and striking eyes that shift between black and red, reflecting his demonic heritage. He is often noted for his handsome features and imposing presence. His usual attire is the standard uniform of the Demon King Academy, consisting of a black shirt beneath a white jacket and matching trousers. The jacket bears a badge in the shape of a cross, marking him as the academy’s sole “misfit.” His outfit is completed with a black belt and a metal chain, further emphasizing his distinctive and authoritative appearance.
Personality
Anos Voldigoad is characterized by his resolute nature, unshakable confidence, and extraordinary perseverance. His overwhelming power instills a level of self-assurance often bordering on arrogance, though he typically carries himself with composure and ease. Even as a child in the Mythical Age, he demonstrated maturity far beyond his years, a trait that remains consistent after his reincarnation.
Although widely known as the Demon King of Tyranny, Anos adheres to a personal code of morality and shows compassion toward those he considers allies. He values loyalty and the development of his companions, often going out of his way to support their growth. Despite his reputation for cruelty, he avoids unnecessary killing and emphasizes the importance of strength not only in combat but also in character. His encouragement for his followers to embrace love and solidarity reflects his own experience as an orphan, having grown up without a family in his original life.
Anos’s ruthless and at times chaotic methods toward his enemies, combined with his unmatched might, cemented his title as the Demon King of Tyranny. Notably, he never declared himself by that name but accepted it once the world came to regard him as such. To his adversaries, he represents an almost incomprehensible force, while to his allies he is a protector whose actions are guided less by tyranny than by conviction. For Anos, acknowledgment as Demon King is inconsequential; his identity, as he often notes, rests in fact rather than belief.
Abilities
Source of Destruction
Anos possesses a unique source specializing in destruction. As a member of the Voldigoad bloodline, his blood is known as the “king of destruction.” The lineage is notable for its difficulty in producing offspring, as destructive sources oppose birth, with death and destruction serving as nourishment for fetuses. The death of Anos’s mother during childbirth contributed to his immense destructive power. He is described as a “Lion of Destruction,” capable of feats such as destroying the Silver Sea.
Immense Magical Power
Anos wields unparalleled magical strength that surpasses nearly all beings he encounters. His magic is so great that it shatters measurement crystals, rendering them incapable of gauging his power. He has overwhelmed opponents such as Ivis Necron, even when the latter was fused with the Keeper of Time Eugo La Raviaz and Anos’s own magic was reduced to less than one-third of its capacity. Despite simultaneously supplying magic to allies and defending others, he remained dominant in combat. It is later revealed that many of his feats in early battles were accomplished using less than a tenth of his full strength, as he had yet to fully adapt to his reincarnated body. Unlike Graham, who releases all his magic at once, Anos deliberately suppresses and offsets his own power to prevent the world from being destroyed.
Overcoming Destruction
Anos’s source grows stronger as it approaches destruction, a trait common to many beings but magnified by his specialization in destructive magic. He has theorized that if his source were ever to perish, the infinitely expanded magic power might remain. However, his source is ineffective against Evansmana, the legendary holy sword created specifically to destroy him.
Demon King’s Blood
When Anos’s source is damaged, it releases a black substance known as the Demon King’s Blood. The substance is highly corrosive, capable of affecting even the powers of the gods. If an opponent cannot withstand its potency, the damage may extend to the world itself. While only powerful attacks can trigger such a release, accumulation of the substance carries the potential to overwhelm the world’s regenerative abilities, gradually leading to large-scale destruction.
Immense Strength
Anos exhibits physical strength of extraordinary magnitude. During a team examination, he lifted and spun Sasha’s magical castle with one hand and opened massive gates that sealed his scepter beneath Castle Delsgade. He has also demonstrated the ability to move the moon with his bare hands to induce a solar eclipse, though he required magic to grasp it, and to support the collapsing sky dome of the Underground World with his raw strength alone.
Immense Speed
Anos possesses speed surpassing even opponents who transform into light. He easily outpaced Gazel Apt Ageila, who had achieved literal lightspeed in an effort to intercept him.
High Intelligence and Spellcraft Mastery
Anos is highly intelligent and strategically adept, often defeating adversaries through both overwhelming force and cunning. He has mastered nearly every known form of magic, though he acknowledges Kanon’s superiority in source magic. He also concedes that while he is unrivaled in destruction magic, Misha Necron could potentially surpass him in creation magic.
Relationships
Gusta
Anos maintains a strong bond with his father, Gusta, despite having been reborn as his son only shortly before the story begins. Gusta demonstrates his devotion when he forges a sword for Anos during the Demon Sword Tournament, exhausting himself in the process. When Anos proudly defended the weapon against mockery, Gusta was moved to tears. Aware that Gusta is the reincarnation of his father from his previous life, Anos makes a deliberate effort to be a dutiful son to heal the strained relationship they once shared.
Izabella
Anos shows deep affection for his mother, Izabella, cherishing her in a way tied to his loss of his original mother, Luna Voldigoad, in his past life. His bond with Izabella is highlighted when the Fan Union nearly sacrifices themselves to protect her from Emilia Ludwell, prompting Anos to vow never to forget their names and declaring himself indebted to them. His wrath toward Emilia at that moment is described as the first time in his existence that he felt genuine rage. When Ramon and his followers attempted to murder Izabella, Anos inflicted a fate worse than death upon them, demonstrating his uncompromising protectiveness. Izabella’s mushroom gratin is noted as Anos’s favorite food. While it is unclear whether Anos consciously knows that Izabella is the reincarnation of his former mother, the connection is suggested through her ties to the Arzenon family.
Misha Necron
Misha is the first person Anos meets upon entering the Demon King Academy. He frequently supports her, encouraging her to grow stronger in her mastery of creation magic. He reassures her that she can one day surpass him, despite her feelings of inadequacy. Their relationship is marked by mutual trust and Anos’s protectiveness. This is most evident when he heals her after she is nearly killed by Diego, before brutally executing Diego multiple times in retaliation.
Sasha Necron
Initially befriended through her connection to Misha, Sasha gradually earns Anos’s trust and affection. Their early interactions are marked by tension, as Anos critiques her understanding of magic and intervenes after she attempts to sever ties with Misha. Ultimately, he forgives her once her true motives are revealed and helps both sisters stabilize their existence. Anos repeatedly praises Sasha’s Magic Eyes of Destruction, even entrusting her with the role of safeguarding others should his own powers fail. Their bond deepens over time, highlighted during their time together in Gairadite and reinforced through several affectionate gestures, including multiple kisses.
Anos Fan Union
The Anos Fan Union, composed of eight devoted followers, plays a pivotal role in protecting Izabella during Emilia Ludwell’s attempt on her life. Anos memorizes each of their names in gratitude and acknowledges his debt to them. He places great faith in their devotion, employing their united prayers through the spell Aske to counter Ledriano Azeschen’s attack, which had been magnified by the prayers of millions.
