Daimon Kaito (大門カイト, Daimon Kaito) is the main protagonist of the anime series Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle. A gifted solver of complex puzzles, he earns the nickname “Einstein” after successfully completing a “Philosopher’s Puzzle,” a feat that distinguishes him as one of the most talented puzzle solvers in the story.

This is a really nice puzzle but it pisses me off. What pisses me off more is that you are trying to use it for murder

Kaito Daimon’s Appearance in Anime

In the first season, Kaito Daimon is portrayed as a somewhat indifferent and carefree individual, often disregarding rules and advice. Examples include constructing a maze out of classroom desks and joining the school’s puzzle club despite Nonoha’s warnings that it would likely lead to conflict. He tends to be blunt in conversation, speaking his mind directly without hesitation.

Kaito is a natural-born Solver, with a deep passion for puzzles that surpasses all other interests. He demonstrates not only strong concentration and intuition but also the rare ability to perceive the intentions and emotions of the puzzle’s creator. The more difficult the challenge, the more his focus and insight come to the forefront, highlighting his unique talent and determination.

Appearance

Kaito Daimon is characterized by his messy brown hair, which is partly tied into a short ponytail, and his layered dark brown eyes. He often keeps a pair of sunglasses resting on his head as part of his signature look.

His usual attire consists of a red unzipped vest worn over a sleeveless black shirt, paired with loose green pants featuring long straps that extend to his knees. He completes the outfit with red shoes and black socks. In later seasons, Kaito’s design is slightly updated, with him wearing a sleeved shirt in place of his original sleeveless one.

Skills

Puzzle Solving
Kaito Daimon is recognized as a prodigious puzzle solver, often regarded as a genius by fellow solvers and rivals alike. His ability lies not only in logical deduction but also in intuitively grasping the creator’s intent behind a puzzle, giving him an edge in solving complex challenges.

After becoming a contractor of the Orpheus Ring, Kaito’s abilities are further amplified. The ring heightens his concentration, perception, and insight, allowing him to tackle puzzles with near-superhuman speed and accuracy, though at significant personal risk.

Relationships

Rook Banjou Crossfield
Rook is Kaito’s closest childhood friend, whom he met while attending Crossfield Academy in England. Kaito, ostracized at the academy due to his advanced solving skills and lack of English proficiency, bonded with Rook in the forest through puzzles, with Rook creating them and Kaito solving them. Both later encountered Jin Makata, who became their mentor. Rook eventually disappeared under mysterious circumstances and later resurfaced as the head of the P.O.G. in Japan. Under the influence of the Orpheus Armband, Rook became mentally unstable and obsessive toward Kaito. Despite this, Kaito sought to save him and remind him of the joy of puzzles. In subsequent seasons, Rook returns as an ally and informant, though he continues to carry guilt over his past actions toward Kaito.

Nonoha Itou
Nonoha is Kaito’s childhood best friend, known for looking after him by cooking and ensuring he attends school. She has been by his side since before the death of his parents, giving her an intuitive understanding of his thoughts and feelings. Though she harbors feelings for Kaito, she frequently denies them when confronted. Despite not sharing his enthusiasm for puzzles, Nonoha attempts to learn them to support him. Kaito, in turn, is deeply protective of her and shields her from danger, even concealing from her that her friend Madoka is secretly a P.O.G. Giver. Their relationship is often lightened by Kaito’s blunt criticism of her cooking, which he jokingly calls “weapons of mass destruction,” typically resulting in comedic punishment from Nonoha.

Jin Makata
Kaito first encountered Jin at Crossfield Academy, when Jin assisted him and Rook after they became lost in a maze. From that point, Kaito and Rook grew attached to him as a mentor, learning more about puzzles under his guidance. Throughout the first season, Kaito is motivated by his desire to find Jin, who has disappeared. When he later locates him at P.O.G. Headquarters, Kaito attempts to help Jin recover his lost memories.

Freecell
Kaito’s first encounter with Freecell is marked by mystery, as Freecell hints at a forgotten promise between them. Freecell eventually reveals that he blames Kaito for his mother’s broken heart and death, fueling a deep resentment. Despite his anger, Freecell is portrayed as caring about Kaito, ultimately desiring to enjoy solving puzzles together rather than seeking true revenge. By the third season, Freecell redeems himself, becoming a friend and ally to Kaito, much like Rook.

Ana Gram
Kaito initially found Ana Gram’s eccentric behavior frustrating, particularly his whimsical outlook and laid-back attitude during their first mission together. However, after successfully completing the mission, Kaito came to respect Ana’s talents and recognized that he could not have succeeded without him. Over time, Ana becomes one of Kaito’s valued friends, frequently offering advice and alternative perspectives that help Kaito face challenges.

Etymology

The given name Kaito (カイト) is written in katakana, which carries no inherent meaning. However, if rendered in kanji, it could take forms such as 海斗, combining kai (海, “sea” or “ocean”) and to (斗, “Dipper”), or 海翔, combining kai (海, “sea” or “ocean”) and to (翔, “soar,” “glide,” or “fly”). His surname, Daimon (大門), is composed of dai (大), meaning “big” or “great,” and mon (門), meaning “gate.” Together, the name may be interpreted as “great gate.”

Trivia

    • The eye Kaito pulls down is the same one that glows red when he uses the Orpheus Ring.
    • His name, Daimon Kaito, is a pun on the Japanese phrase mondai kaitō (問題解答), which translates to “problem/solution.”
    • He strongly dislikes Nonoha’s homemade sweets, which he often calls “weapons of mass destruction,” as well as green onions. However, by the second season, he gradually learns to tolerate Nonoha’s cooking.
