Mary Kikakujou (亀鶴城 メアリ, Kikakujō Meari) is a French–Japanese student and one of the members of the Supreme Five Swords (Tenka Goken) in the anime and manga series Armed Girl’s Machiavellism. Known for her refined upbringing and sharp swordsmanship, she upholds the academy’s strict code of discipline alongside her fellow leaders.

As a character, Mary is distinguished by her blend of elegance and intensity. Her encounters with Fudou Nomura challenge her views on men and discipline, leading to a complicated mix of rivalry, respect, and budding affection.

Appearance in Anime

Mary Kikakujou presents herself as a refined and disciplined young lady, embodying the grace expected of her noble background. She is strict about following the rules of both the academy and the traditions of fencing, refusing to exploit unfair advantages even when it would benefit her in combat. Her composure, however, sometimes falters; when flustered or emotionally stirred, she unconsciously lapses into speaking French, highlighting her mixed heritage.

Over the course of the series, Mary’s relationship with Fudou Nomura brings out different sides of her character. Initially dismissive of him, she grows to respect him after their duel, impressed by his refusal to exploit her vulnerabilities. This respect gradually develops into romantic interest, evident in her jealousy whenever other girls interact with him or when she conspires with Rin to keep watch over him.

Mary also reveals a more playful and provocative side, occasionally displaying suggestive behavior toward Nomura. She openly requests that he indulge her whims, such as asking him to touch her, though he consistently refuses or shows indifference. These moments underscore both her mischievous tendencies and her struggle to reconcile her strict upbringing with her more personal desires.

Appearance

Mary Kikakujou is portrayed as a beautiful young woman of average height, with long, wavy blonde hair, striking blue eyes, and a notably fair complexion. She is often admired at the academy for both her elegance and her well-endowed figure, which contributes to her reputation as one of the most attractive members of the Supreme Five Swords.

Her beauty, combined with her refined mannerisms, reinforces her image as a proper young lady, though her expressive reactions especially when flustered contrast with her otherwise composed appearance.

Background

Mary Kikakujou is of mixed French–Japanese heritage and spent much of her childhood in Spain. Her upbringing there influenced her fighting style, leading her to specialize in the rapier and incorporate elements of Spanish culture, such as references to bullfighting, into her combat approach and mannerisms.

It is mentioned that she has a younger sister named Choka U. Baragasaki, though it is uncertain whether this connection is intentional or merely coincidental.

Abilities and Powers

Master Swordswoman
Mary is an expert in Western fencing, wielding her rapier with remarkable precision and dexterity. Her thrusts are accurate enough to target central nerves, making her attacks both swift and highly effective. According to Tsukuyo Inaba, Mary’s style blends elements of traditional Jigen-ryū swordsmanship with Western fencing techniques, resulting in a hybrid approach that emphasizes both speed and precision. This unique fusion allows her to unleash consecutive thrusts at a pace that can overwhelm even highly skilled opponents such as Fudou Nomura.

Sword Techniques

  • Flick: A technique in which Mary diverts her thrust at the last moment, slipping past an opponent’s guard to inflict shallow cuts.
    • Redoublement: Mary unpredictably redirects her sword movements, making the trajectory of her attacks difficult to anticipate.
      • Touché par Touché: A downward thrust executed with controlled force.
        • Touché par Dessous: An upward thrust aimed at penetrating an opponent’s guard.
          • Jetage: A rapid offensive maneuver that uses momentum to increase striking power.
            • Flèche: A fencing technique where Mary lunges explosively forward, delivering a thrust while closing distance quickly.
              • Enhanced Speed
Mary possesses exceptional agility, enabling her to launch thrusts with incredible quickness and maintain seamless footwork. Her speed allows her to compete evenly with Nomura in combat and to swiftly overwhelm multiple opponents, such as the Hanasaka Musketeers, with ease.

                Relationships

                Fudou Nomura
Mary initially disliked Nomura, resenting his rebellious attitude and lack of respect toward authority. After he defeated her subordinate Chouka, she challenged him directly but was ultimately defeated. Despite her loss, she began to develop feelings for him, impressed by his integrity and refusal to take advantage of her.

Following their duel, Mary occasionally attempted to attract Nomura’s attention, such as by changing her perfume, and she often blushes when he notices or compliments her. At the same time, she expresses disappointment when he consistently rejects or ignores her more provocative advances. Her feelings for him are shown through jealousy, particularly when he appears to favor Rin Onigawara or shows indifference to Mary’s efforts.

                Rin Onigawara
Mary and Rin share a professional relationship as members of the Supreme Five Swords, united by their strict enforcement of the academy’s rules and their early disdain for men. While they respect each other’s skills, their dynamic is complicated by their mutual romantic interest in Nomura. This rivalry often leads to competition for his attention, with Mary expressing frustration when Nomura treats Rin with special regard.

Despite this tension, the two are capable of cooperation in times of crisis. They have joined forces in battles, including their confrontation with Kirukiru Amou, demonstrating that their loyalty as allies can outweigh their rivalry when necessary.

                Trivia

                  • Mary’s birthday is November 25, and her blood type is O.
                    • When flustered, she sometimes forgets certain Japanese words such as the word for “kiss” and relies on a book to recall them.
