Appearance in Anime

Mikoto is a tall and muscular man distinguished by his red hair and amber eyes. His hair is kept short, spiked, and ruffled, with two longer strands falling across either side of his face, accompanied by prominent sideburns. From his teenage years onward, faint creases have appeared beneath his eyes, a feature that has remained with him into adulthood.

His usual attire consists of a black leather jacket with a fur collar worn over a white V-neck shirt, paired with dark blue jeans fastened with a simple brown belt. A silver chain hangs from his belt to his back pocket, and he completes the look with black shoes. Mikoto accessorizes with silver jewelry, including a ring, a star-shaped necklace, and a piercing in his left ear, the latter originally belonging to Tatara Totsuka.

In the past, he has been seen in alternate outfits. On one occasion, he wore a long-sleeved brown sweater beneath a high-collared black vest. As a high school student, Mikoto typically dressed in a white collared shirt with an upturned collar and a loose, striped red bolo tie, layered with a black sweater vest, along with plaid pants and brown shoes.

Personality

Although he holds the title of Red King, Mikoto Suoh shows little personal attachment to it, at times questioning why he was chosen at all. He is often portrayed as indolent and detached, spending much of his time sleeping and capable of falling into deep slumber almost instantly. Even when abruptly awakened such as by a head slam—he reacts with remarkable calm. This laid-back demeanor contrasts with his reputation as the most violent-tempered of all the Kings, particularly in his youth, when his anger was more readily displayed.

Mikoto is also known for his rough manners and blunt sense of humor. For example, Seri Awashima observed that he would complain about food offered by the Blue Clan but eat it without hesitation. His dark humor occasionally surfaces in unsettling ways, such as suggesting the name “Basashi” (raw horse meat) for a horse, or joking about eating it after eyeing its shoulder.

Despite his aloofness, Mikoto has a deep bond with his clansmen in HOMRA, valuing their well-being and loyalty. Following the death of Tatara Totsuka, however, he became more withdrawn and reserved, though his genuine concern for his followers remained unchanged.

A personal quirk of Mikoto is his habitual smoking, which he has indulged in since his early twenties.

History

Mikoto Suoh lost his parents at a young age and was raised by his grandfather. A month after the Kagutsu Crater Incident, his grandfather whose friend had died in the disaster took him to see the crater, which had since filled with water. While swimming in the debris, Mikoto briefly encountered a boy of similar age wearing a straw hat, though the two went their separate ways shortly after.

During high school, at the age of fifteen, Mikoto met Izumo Kusanagi, with whom he quickly became close friends. He frequently visited Izumo’s bar, HOMRA, a place that later became the base of operations for his clan. Not long afterward, Mikoto also encountered Tatara Totsuka, a middle-school student who admired him. Their friendship grew, with Totsuka eventually joining Mikoto and Izumo as one of his first followers.

At the age of eighteen, Mikoto awakened as the Third King during a battle with a dangerous Strain nicknamed Earless Mitsuha. Mitsuha, who idolized the previous Red King, Genji Kagutsu, sought the Red power for himself but was defeated by Mikoto. During the fight, Mikoto “connected” with the Dresden Slate and inherited the mantle of the Red King. His first act as King was to extend his hand to Kusanagi and Totsuka, who accepted and became his first clansmen, marking the birth of the new Red Clan, HOMRA.

As leader, Mikoto gathered new members into HOMRA, including Shōhei Akagi, who proved his resolve by accepting Mikoto’s flame during their initiation handshake. Mikoto’s leadership style was often quiet and detached, but his actions reflected a strong sense of responsibility toward his followers. He emphasized restraint, cautioning younger members against overusing their powers, and frequently reminded them not to leave “ashes” behind in battle.

In his daily life with HOMRA, Mikoto balanced his laziness with moments of striking decisiveness. He joined his clan in activities ranging from casual baseball games to battles against rival gangs and criminal groups such as the Rakshasa drug dealers. Despite his outward indifference, Mikoto demonstrated loyalty and care for his clan, even when his methods seemed harsh. For example, he tested newcomers like Eric Sōlt with fire and entrusted Totsuka with overseeing their integration.

Though his time as King weighed heavily on him leaving him at times lonely and contemplative Mikoto remained the core of HOMRA, embodying both its fiery power and its strong sense of unity.

Power and Abilities

As the Red King and leader of HOMRA, Mikoto Suoh wields immense destructive power through his clan’s signature red aura, primarily manifesting as fire. His abilities are among the most formidable of all the Kings, combining overwhelming offensive force with defensive resilience.

Red Aura
Mikoto’s aura manifests as red flames that can engulf his body. Offensively, it allows him to unleash devastating attacks capable of overwhelming enemies and leveling structures. Defensively, it serves as a barrier, protecting him even against the aura strikes of powerful opponents such as Reisi Munakata, the Blue King.

Flame Slash
By concentrating his aura into his left hand and swinging, Mikoto projects a massive wave of fire capable of slicing through solid structures. One such attack horizontally severed a clock tower, causing the upper half to collapse.

Illusion Breaking
Mikoto’s aura has the capacity to dispel illusions, demonstrated when he effortlessly broke through one of Neko’s most powerful constructs simply by releasing his flames into the environment.

In addition to these techniques, Mikoto’s aura is notable for its sheer scale and volatility, reflecting both his strength as King and his short temper. While unmatched in destructive capacity, overuse of his powers comes at the risk of instability, a danger noted by allies and rivals alike.

Etymology

The given name Mikoto (尊) translates to “honor,” “precious,” or “valuable,” and is a name often associated with divinity. It is derived from the full title of the Shinto deity Susano-o no Mikoto (素戔嗚尊), the storm god known for his violent temper, a trait mirrored in Mikoto’s volatile personality as the Red King.

According to myth, Susano-o was banished from Heaven and descended to the province of Izumo, where he rescued the maiden Kushinada-hime from being sacrificed to the Yamata no Orochi, an eight-headed serpent. In the process, he wielded the legendary Sword of Totsuka and later discovered the Sword of Kusanagi within the serpent’s tail. These mythological associations emphasize themes of violence, destruction, and reluctant heroism, qualities that parallel Mikoto’s characterization.

Mikoto’s surname, Suoh (周防), combines the kanji su (周), meaning “circumference,” “lap,” or “surroundings,” and oh (防), meaning “defense.” Together, the name suggests the imagery of a protective barrier or defensive circle, which may symbolize Mikoto’s role as both protector and destructive force within HOMRA.

Trivia

    • Mikoto is not noted to have any particular hobbies.
    • His left ear was already pierced when Shōhei Akagi joined HOMRA. However, in the three months leading up to Tatara Totsuka’s death, both the accessory and the piercing hole had disappeared. A week after Totsuka’s death, Mikoto pierced his ear again.
    • His current earring is said to be filled with Totsuka’s blood, symbolizing his grief and continued bond with his fallen clansman.
    • Mikoto lived for only twelve days after Totsuka’s death, his fate closely tied to the loss of his closest companion.
