Bu-Ling Huang

Bu-Ling Huang (黄 歩鈴,  Fon Purin) is one of the main heroines of the manga and anime series Tokyo Mew Mew. She is the fourth member of the Mew Mews to be introduced and has her DNA merged with that of a golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia), granting her agility and primate-like abilities in her transformed state.

Appearance in Mew Mew Form

Bu-Ling is the shortest member of the Mew Mews and is characterized by her short blonde hair, usually styled with four small braids at the nape of her neck, and light brown eyes. In the original anime and manga, she is often seen in Chinese-inspired outfits, reflecting her cultural background, which she wears at home, at parties, or on visits. In Tokyo Mew Mew New, her design is updated: she sports two small pigtail tufts on the top of her head and wears more Western-style clothing, such as T-shirts, overalls, hoodie-blouses, and sneakers.

As Mew Pudding, her hair brightens to golden yellow and her eyes shift to yellow-orange (though some illustrations depict them as yellow or orange). She wears a short yellow jumpsuit trimmed with orange lace, paired with yellow legwarmers and orange ballet flats, the straps of which crisscross over the legwarmers. Her accessories include a yellow choker holding her Mew Pendant, a yellow garter belt on her left thigh, and yellow armbands, all decorated with orange lace. She also wears orange fingerless gloves with furry trim. As part of her animal DNA, Bu-Ling gains an orange monkey tail and ears. Her Mew Mark, shaped like two monkey tails, appears on her forehead.

In Tokyo Mew Mew New, Bu-Ling’s outfit retains the same color palette but is redesigned. Her jumpsuit is replaced with a yellow one-piece accented with orange details. Her pendant is reimagined as an orange ribbon with a heart-shaped gem, while her garter includes an attached ribbon. Her fingerless gloves are updated with white bands and a small orange heart gem. She wears orange knee-high socks with yellow ribbons crisscrossed up to the knees, tied at the back with a bow, and yellow flats. Her hairstyle is altered, with twin buns tied with orange ribbons and her signature four braids lengthened for added emphasis.

Personality

Bu-Ling is characterized as the most playful and energetic member of the Mew Mews, with a personality that perfectly reflects her fusion with a golden lion tamarin. She enjoys performing acrobatics, often displaying her agility and flexibility in both battle and daily life. Her hyperactive and mischievous nature frequently sets her apart from the others, to the extent that Minto Aizawa sometimes considers her immature. Despite her lightheartedness, Bu-Ling can act with maturity and responsibility, particularly when caring for her younger siblings, taking on household duties such as cooking and cleaning.

Both anime adaptations emphasize her dream of becoming a circus acrobat when she grows up. In Tokyo Mew Mew New, this ambition is given further depth, being portrayed as inspired by her late mother, who once worked as a trapeze artist.

Abilities

As a Civilian
Bu-Ling is highly skilled in acrobatics and circus performance, with talents that include balancing, tumbling, and even riding on a ball. Despite her young age, she is also capable in household responsibilities such as cooking and cleaning, which she manages while caring for her younger siblings. She is exceptionally energetic, agile, and enduring, traits that make her stand out among her peers. In addition, Bu-Ling has a background in martial arts, trained by her father, a Chinese martial arts master, which gives her considerable combat ability. She is also able to swim competently.

As a Mew Mew
When transformed into Mew Pudding, her natural agility, balance, and speed are further amplified, enabling her to perform superhuman acrobatics in combat. She also develops the ability to communicate with monkeys, reflecting her genetic fusion with a golden lion tamarin.

Etymology

Bu-Ling’s full name, Huang Bu-Ling (黄 歩鈴), can be interpreted as “yellow bell.” Her surname Huang (黄) means “yellow,” while her given name Bu-Ling (歩鈴) combines “step” or “walk” (歩) with “bell” (鈴). The name reflects both her bright, playful personality and her role as the energetic, lively member of the Mew Mews.
