Red (レッド), born Gideon Ragnason (ギデオン・ラグナソン), is the main protagonist of the Banished from the Hero’s Party series. Originally an adventurer ranked at D-Class, he resides in the frontier town of Zoltan, where he sustains himself by gathering and selling medicinal herbs. His long-term goal is to open his own apothecary and lead a peaceful, modest life away from conflict. Endowed with the divine blessing known as the “Sign of the Guide”, Red possesses the ability to summon and lead heroes on their quests. Once an essential member of a renowned adventuring party, he eventually stepped away from the group to pursue his dream of living quietly. Over time, he falls in love with Rit, a former adventurer and princess, with whom he builds a life and later marries, valuing their bond above all else.
Background

Appearance in Anime
Red was born with the divine blessing known as the Sign of the Guide, which granted him an initial level exceeding 30, a milestone that most knights would spend their entire lives striving to reach. This ability made him an invaluable figure within the Hero’s Party, where he used his gift to direct and support fellow knights during their battles.
However, the blessing also came with limitations. Unlike his companions, Red could not wield advanced magic or master high-level martial techniques, as his gift focused solely on leadership and guidance. As the rest of the party grew stronger and eventually surpassed him in combat ability, tension arose within the group. Eventually, Ares Srowa, one of his companions, dismissed him as not being a “true comrade” and forced him to leave the party.
Following his expulsion, Gideon abandoned his former name and began living under the alias Red. Seeking a quiet existence far from the turmoil of adventuring, he settled in the frontier town of Zoltan, where he pursued his dream of running an apothecary. Together with Rit, he later established Red and Rit’s Apothecary, dedicating his life to healing and supporting others in his own way.
Several years before the events of the main story, Gray was approached by Daniel Dickens and Catherine Ward, who had learned of him through a religiously fanatical prisoner. Using his drugs to assess them, Gray uncovered Danny’s true nature and deemed him suitable for the role of an Angel. With Danny’s assistance, Gray was able to recruit the remaining floor masters, allowing his long-planned experiment to finally begin.
Appearance
Red is depicted with dark hair and dark blue eyes, giving him a modest and approachable appearance compared to other adventurers. His usual attire consists of a cloak, a white shirt, blue trousers, and brown boots, paired with a single long glove on one arm. He carries a copper sword, a weapon given to him by Ares Srowa as a replacement after his original blade was taken when he was expelled from the Hero’s Party.
For his daily work as an herbalist, Red keeps a small satchel fastened at his waist with a brown belt, where he stores medicinal herbs and plants collected from the mountains surrounding Zoltan. His overall look emphasizes practicality and simplicity, reflecting his desire for a quiet life rather than the grandeur of his adventuring past.
Personality
Red is portrayed as a compassionate and selfless individual who prioritizes the well-being of others over personal gain. Though capable in combat, he avoids unnecessary violence and aspires to live a quiet, peaceful life in Zoltan. Despite his strengths, he often struggles with self-doubt, believing himself to have been a burden to the Hero’s Party, which contributes to his modest and unassuming nature.
He demonstrates a willingness to set aside his pride for the greater good, and he is prepared to risk his life when circumstances demand it for example, braving a wildfire to gather herbs needed to prepare medicine for a sick companion. Red’s outlook is defined by humility and practicality, making him approachable and dependable to those around him.
In his personal life, Red is deeply devoted to Rit, valuing their relationship above all else. While Rit is more direct and assertive, Red’s personality leans toward being amicable and compromising, balancing their dynamic and highlighting his nurturing, considerate side.
Mastery Skill
Red possesses several abilities tied to his Sign of the Guide, as well as personal combat training and survival experience. While he lacks the capacity to use magic, he has honed a range of physical and practical skills that make him an effective adventurer despite his limitations.
Swift Mastery – Lightning Speed
Enhances Red’s movement to ten times that of an ordinary person. At peak performance, he is capable of sprinting one kilometer in approximately 15 seconds, equivalent to a speed of around 240 km/h (150 mph). At this velocity, he appears as little more than a blur to opponents. Though his speed can be further amplified with magical assistance, this represents his natural limit. His swiftness has been compared to the flight speed of a century-old adult dragon.
Endurance Mastery – Fatigue Immunity
Grants Red resistance to physical exhaustion, allowing him to maintain full strength throughout a day of strenuous activity without tiring. However, natural bodily needs such as sleep remain essential, meaning he cannot function indefinitely without rest.
First Aid Mastery – Provisional Divine Doctor
Provides Red with the ability to alleviate symptoms and stabilize patients even without diagnosing the root cause of an illness. While not a substitute for advanced treatment through healing magic or surgery, it allows him to stop bleeding, reduce pain, and preserve critical time until proper care can be administered.
Acrobatics Mastery – Slow Fall
Enables Red to use nearby surfaces to slow descent, reducing the momentum of a fall. Although not as effective as the Fly Skill, it remains a versatile ability that offers significant utility in both combat and exploration.
Great Reflexes
Red demonstrates exceptional reaction speed, having dodged and even caught weapons thrown at him in battle. He is shown to anticipate attacks swiftly, such as evading an assault from Van and reacting to a goblin’s spear at high velocity.
Weaknesses
Despite his strengths, Red’s abilities are limited by the fact that he cannot use offensive or supportive magic, which places him at a disadvantage compared to other adventurers. His lack of confidence in his own skills further hinders his self-perception, even though he continues to prove resourceful and capable in practice.
Relationships
Rit – Rit is Red’s wife and closest companion. A former adventurer and princess, she first encountered Red during a mission undertaken by the Hero’s Party in her kingdom. Initially hesitant to accept outside assistance, Rit gradually grew closer to him after witnessing his reliability and learning from his belief that seeking help is not a weakness. After the demons threatening her homeland were defeated, she parted ways with the Hero’s Party but kept fond memories of Red.
Their paths crossed again in Zoltan, shortly after Red opened his apothecary. Choosing to stay by his side, Rit announced that she would live with him and help run the shop. Their relationship deepened into a romantic partnership, eventually leading to marriage. Red values Rit above all else, refusing any suggestion of separation, and considers her irreplaceable.
Ruti Ragnason – Ruti, the Hero and Red’s younger sister, shares a deep bond with him rooted in their childhood, when he often looked after her. Even after being expelled from the Hero’s Party, Red continued to worry about Ruti’s happiness and well-being. Their reunion in Zoltan reaffirmed their closeness, though Red made clear that he would not return to the Party, having chosen a peaceful life in the frontier town.
Moved by his decision, Ruti eventually renounced her role as the Hero and chose to remain in Zoltan with Red. Over time, she also developed a strong friendship with Rit, forming a supportive bond among the three of them.
Ares Srowa – Ares served as Red’s adversary within the Hero’s Party and was directly responsible for his expulsion. Their relationship was marked by hostility, with Ares regarding Gideon as unworthy, while Red resented his arrogance and jealousy. Their conflict culminated in a final battle where Red struck Ares down after his betrayal was revealed. His death ended their rivalry, though it underscored the destructive nature of Ares’s envy.
Theodora Dephilo – Theodora, a paladin of the Hero’s Party, respected Red and valued his contributions as a comrade. She did not share Ares’s view that he was a burden and openly acknowledged his importance to the group. Her animosity toward Ares grew after his treatment of Red, aligning her opinions with other Party members who regarded Gideon’s departure as a mistake.
Yarandrala – Yarandrala, a high elf and one of Red’s closest friends, was deeply affected by his departure from the Hero’s Party. Disillusioned by his expulsion, she eventually left the Party herself. Upon reuniting in Zoltan, Yarandrala rekindled her friendship with Red and developed strong ties with Rit and Ruti. She later chose to remain in Zoltan for a time, supporting them as both an ally and a trusted companion.
Chronology
Red spent his early years alongside his younger sister, Ruti, supporting and guiding her through the challenges of her role as the Hero. As Ruti’s divine blessing suppressed her emotions, Red often took it upon himself to comfort her and ensure she experienced moments of happiness. His devotion to her well-being shaped much of his early life and his place within the Hero’s Party.
