Kyouka Uzen

Kyouka Uzen (羽う前ぜん 京きょう香か,  Uzen Kyōka) is the Chief of the Anti-Demon Corps’ 7th Unit and the main female protagonist of the  Mato Seihei no Slave anime and manga series. She joined the Anti-Demon Corps after her hometown was destroyed by a horde of Shuuki, vowing to avenge her friends and family by eradicating every Shuuki within Mato. Her Peach Blessing, Slave, was initially regarded as ineffective, as the Shuuki she turned into slaves were weak and of little use in battle. However, after meeting Yuuki Wakura and making him her Slave, the ability evolved into a formidable power and a decisive asset for the Corps. Kyouka later triumphed over Ren Yamashiro in the Commander Election, earning the position of Head Commander. Despite her victory, she intends to hold the role only until the Eight Thunder Gods are completely eliminated.

Appearance in Anime

As the Chief of the 7th Unit, Kyouka Uzen embodies the qualities of a disciplined and determined leader. She is fierce, militaristic, and highly serious in battle, displaying a deep sense of responsibility toward her subordinates, allies, and civilians. Kyouka will dive into dangerous situations without hesitation if it means protecting others. Her drive is fueled by a personal ambition to become the next Commander of the Anti-Demon Corps, competing with other unit chiefs for the position.

Despite her commanding presence, Kyouka treats Yuuki Wakura whom she refers to as her “Slave” with notable kindness and respect, unbothered by his gender in a society where men hold no combat power. Her charisma and compassion have earned her the admiration of her subordinates, even managing to draw out the once-cold Varvara Pilipenko. Outside of combat, she enjoys small pleasures, such as carrying candies to share with others, and occasionally shows a more relaxed, approachable side.

In battle, Kyouka remains calm and composed, efficiently directing her team while taking down multiple Shuuki herself. She invests significant time into training, both for her own improvement and to mentor her subordinates. However, her intense focus on eradicating the Shuuki often leads her to neglect her own personal life, something Yuuki occasionally encourages her to address.

Kyouka’s interactions with Yuuki often reveal a softer, more emotional side. Due to the nature of her Peach Blessing, rewarding Yuuki sometimes places her in intimate or awkward situations, which initially flustered her due to her lack of experience with men. Over time, she has grown more comfortable, even showing signs of romantic affection toward him becoming possessive and jealous when others show him attention. She has been known to give rewards to Yuuki without necessity, later reacting with embarrassment when she realizes it.

Her hatred for the Shuuki, especially the One-Horned Shuuki that destroyed her hometown, runs deep. This vendetta has, at times, clouded her judgment, though she remains self-aware enough to pull herself back. After finally avenging her village, she found some closure but continues to fight for her ultimate goal: to eradicate the Shuuki completely and prevent anyone from suffering the same fate she endured.

Appearance

Kyouka Uzen is a striking young woman with an athletic yet feminine build, exuding both beauty and strength. Her long, silver hair cascades down to her thighs, accompanied by a full fringe that covers her forehead and two long tresses framing her face. Her sharp, pink eyes give her a confident and commanding presence, complementing her disciplined attitude.

She is most often seen in the standard Anti-Demon Corps uniform, customized with subtle personal touches. The outfit consists of a navy-blue tunic with red accents, gold buttons, white trim along the collar and cuffs, and decorative gold epaulettes. She wears a matching navy skirt with a red-trimmed front pleat, paired with black thigh-high stockings and navy, high-heeled boots secured with buckles at the top. Her accessories include a brown belt, a navy patrol cap, white gloves, and distinctive blue ear ornaments shaped like horns or feathers.

In battle, Kyouka wields a katana with a blue-and-gold scabbard, gold fittings, and a green ito-wrapped hilt. The weapon, combined with her refined yet authoritative appearance, reinforces her image as both a capable commander and a formidable combatant.

In his Killer Fang form, Yuuki’s personality undergoes a drastic transformation, becoming irrational, bloodthirsty, and indiscriminately violent toward friend and foe alike. This change unsettled even Kyoka, who is typically composed and fearless, prompting her to advise canceling the form immediately. The shift is believed to stem from Ren Yamashiro’s more ruthless and inhuman disposition, which contrasts sharply with the purer wills exhibited by other masters.

Background

Kyouka Uzen was born and raised in the rural village of Gassan Oisawa in Yamagata Prefecture, where she lived a peaceful life among family and friends. This tranquility was shattered when a horde of Shuuki, led by a powerful One-Horned Shuuki, attacked her village. The assault left no survivors except Kyouka, who witnessed the destruction firsthand.

The massacre instilled in her a deep, unrelenting hatred toward the Shuuki, shaping her resolve to eradicate them entirely. Determined to prevent others from suffering the same fate, she joined the Anti-Demon Corps, dedicating herself to rigorous training and rising through the ranks. Her skill, discipline, and leadership ability eventually earned her the position of Chief of the 7th Unit, from where she continues her mission to eliminate the Shuuki and avenge her fallen village.

Powers and Abilities

Like all women who have consumed a Peach from Mato, Kyouka Uzen possesses a unique supernatural ability. Her Peach Blessing, Slave, focuses on enhancing the abilities of those she transforms into her Slaves rather than directly augmenting her own strength. This support-oriented nature initially caused others to doubt her capability to achieve her ambitious goals, leading to the belief that she was unsuited for front-line combat.

To compensate, Kyouka dedicated herself to intense martial arts training, strict discipline, and rigorous self-improvement. She honed her combat skills to the point where she could effectively fight Shuuki alongside her Slaves, rather than relying solely on her Blessing. Her determination and prowess eventually led her to overthrow the previous 7th Unit Chief, Yumeji Shimomura whose own Peach Blessing, Imperium, granted telekinetic powers and claim the leadership position.

Kyouka is regarded as one of the strongest women in the Anti-Demon Corps, though she acknowledges that her power is still outmatched by Ren Yamashiro, the current Corps Commander and the position she aspires to attain. Uniquely among the Chiefs, Vice Chiefs, and standard members, she has developed a personal fighting style specialized for combating Shuuki, enabling her to take them down through sheer skill and strategy rather than relying entirely on the force granted by her Peach Blessing.

Etymology

Kyouka’s given name, 京香 (Kyōka), is composed of the kanji 京 (kyō), meaning “capital” or “metropolis,” and 香 (ka), meaning “fragrance” or “perfume.” Her surname, 羽前 (Uzen), is the name of an old province in Japan, located in what is now Yamagata and parts of Akita Prefecture referencing her canonical birthplace in Gassan Oisawa, Yamagata Prefecture.
