Alto Goldfield

Alto Goldfield (アルト・ゴールドフィルド, Aruto Gōrudofirudo) is the main male protagonist of the manga and anime series Kinsou no Vermeil. He is best known for summoning Vermeil, a devil regarded as one of the most powerful in existence. Following the betrayal of Obsidian, Alto is compelled to reveal Vermeil’s true identity to the student council though Chris had already been aware of it and subsequently becomes a member of the council.

Appearance in Anime

Alto Goldfield is a gifted student at the Royal Ortigia Magic Academy, consistently earning perfect scores in all subjects except summoning magic, a skill required to advance to the academy’s second year. Facing the threat of expulsion, he searched the library for a solution and, by apparent chance, an old book containing a summoning circle fell from a high shelf onto his head. With no other options, Alto performed the ritual despite not knowing what creature it might call forth.

The summon produced Vermeil, a powerful devil once regarded as an enemy of humanity. Impressed by Alto’s extraordinary mana capacity which is so potent it prevents him from attracting ordinary familiars, as it acts like a toxin to them—Vermeil agreed to become his familiar. Her flirtatious behavior frequently leaves him flustered, but her strength allowed him to pass into his second year. Shortly afterward, Alto dueled his childhood friend Lilia Kudelfeyt, who was suspicious of Vermeil’s nature. With Vermeil’s overwhelming power, they easily secured victory. Later, in private, Vermeil “rewarded” Alto with a kiss to replenish the mana she had expended during the match.

Appearance

Alto is depicted with silver-white hair and striking gold eyes. His typical attire consists of a blue button-up jacket with gold trim worn over a white dress shirt and a green tie, paired with navy trousers and black dress shoes. While his slim build gives him a refined appearance, Vermeil remarks that he is more physically fit and muscular than he appears when dressed.

Personality

Alto is portrayed as a responsible and mature young man, known for his politeness, diligence, and academic focus. He harbors the ambition of becoming a Platinum Square magician and demonstrates a strong work ethic in pursuit of that goal. While naturally composed, Alto is easily flustered by displays of overt affection or seduction particularly from Vermeil yet possesses the willpower to resist such advances in most situations. As his relationship with her deepens, however, he becomes more receptive to her advances and occasionally initiates intimate moments himself, though the extent of these encounters beyond kissing and light physical affection is left ambiguous.

Confident and generally cheerful, Alto is also willing to stand up for himself and others, though he exhibits mild insecurity regarding his short stature and reacts defensively when teased about it.

Following Obsidian’s betrayal and the battle that exposed Vermeil’s identity to the student council, Alto demonstrated a readiness to accept severe consequences, including expulsion. However, the council opted to recruit him instead, both to monitor his actions and to harness Vermeil’s power for the school’s benefit. With faculty trust in question, the council chose to keep Vermeil’s true nature as a devil secret from the staff, a decision Alto agreed to, fully aware that refusal was unlikely to be accepted by the council president.

Chronology

At the start of his second year at the Royal Ortigia Magic Academy, Alto Goldfield excels in every subject except summoning magic, a requirement to advance to the next grade. Facing the prospect of being held back, he discovers an old summoning book in the library and performs the ritual, inadvertently summoning Vermeil, a powerful devil in human form. Grateful for her release from imprisonment, Vermeil agrees to become his familiar, sustaining herself by draining Alto’s mana through kisses.

When Alto introduces Vermeil to his class, she conceals her demonic traits to pass as human. His childhood friend, Lilia Kudelfeyt, suspicious of Vermeil, challenges him to a duel. With Vermeil’s overwhelming magic, Alto easily wins, commanding Lilia to befriend Vermeil. Despite Vermeil’s insistence that Lilia has romantic feelings for him, Alto remains doubtful.

Soon after, Vermeil draws attention by defeating a rampaging dragon with a single finger flick, leading to a confrontation with Rex, its owner, and his brother. Empowered by Vermeil’s mana, Alto defeats them, reaffirming his goal of becoming a great mage.

During a class competition to retrieve a rare fairy flower, Alto, Vermeil, and Lilia face obstacles including a Cerberus guard. Although Lilia briefly gains the advantage through an invisibility potion, a mishap causes the prize to fall into the hands of classmate Sharol, who wins the challenge.

Later, Vermeil causes another stir by entering the boys’ locker room to watch Alto change. Around the same time, Alto learns that Chris Westland expelled Rex from the Dragonriders for losing to him and for having a dinosaur instead of a dragon as a familiar. Angered, Alto challenges Chris to a duel. Though initially overwhelmed by her fire magic, he rallies with Vermeil’s support, forcing Chris to surrender. Alto, however, recognizes that she was not fighting at full strength.

Abilities

Immense Magic Power
Alto possesses an exceptionally high magic power capacity. According to Vermeil, his mana is so potent and dense that it acts as a toxin to most familiars, causing his summoning attempts to fail until he called forth Vermeil, who can not only withstand his mana but thrives on consuming it. During his Bronze Exams, Alto shattered the crystal used to measure mana by channeling it through its most resistant side—a feat noted by the proctor as difficult even for a Platinum-level mage.

Prodigious Talent
In addition to his work ethic, Alto is naturally more skilled than most mages his age, despite coming from a non-magical family with no innate magical potential.

Golden Mana
First displayed when Alto was empowered through Vermeil’s kiss, this golden colored mana is regarded as highly unusual. It is later revealed that this hue signifies demonic mana, indicating that Alto is drawing directly from Vermeil’s power.

Silver Mana
Alto’s own mana manifests as silver when used in large quantities. While its unique coloration is repeatedly noted, its deeper significance remains unexplained.

Demon’s Heart
After Vermeil used her magic to save his life, Alto acquired a Demon Heart, linking their fates together if one dies, the other perishes as well. To maintain his life, Alto must periodically receive mana from Vermeil via a kiss. He can also transfer the demonic mana from his heart back to her to boost her strength, but doing so severely weakens him and places his own life at risk.

Relationships

Vermeil
A powerful demon unsealed from a mysterious grimoire by Alto, Vermeil became his familiar, enabling him to advance to his second year at the Royal Ortigia Magic Academy. Initially, Alto was embarrassed and hesitant to “feed” her mana through intimate contact, but over time, their bond deepened into genuine affection and passion. During a confrontation with Obsidian, Alto was accidentally killed when stopping Vermeil’s rage-fueled attack; she revived him by giving him part of her heart, linking their lives together. Despite knowing her dark past, Alto places unwavering trust in her and vows to remain by her side, leading their relationship beyond that of master and familiar into a mutual romantic partnership.

Lilia Kudelfeyt
Alto’s childhood friend, Lilia harbors romantic feelings for him, though he remains oblivious to them. While her thoughts and occasional schemes can be eccentric, she is ultimately a loyal and supportive companion.

Chris Westland
A senior student and later Alto’s fellow student council member. Their relationship began in rivalry when Alto challenged Chris to a duel over her treatment of Rex Freud, ultimately defeating her. When Chris was later attacked by a demon-enhanced Lex Freud, Alto intervened to save her, and together they stopped Obsidian’s escape. Although she learned Vermeil’s true identity, Chris chose to keep it secret. She demonstrated maturity by quickly forgiving Alto for an accidental intrusion while she was changing. Following the academy invasion, Chris began personally training Alto in combat to prepare him for potential threats from either the military or the Platinum Mages.

Elena Kimberlight
The student council president who recruited Alto after he revealed Vermeil’s true nature to the council in the aftermath of Obsidian’s betrayal. While she offered various reasons for bringing him in, it is implied she may have a personal interest in him. Elena also quickly forgave Alto for an accidental intrusion while she was changing. After the interruption of the Bronze Square exam by the Platinum Mages, she began assisting in his training alongside the other council members to ready him for future conflicts.

Trivia

    • It is suggested that Alto’s discovery of the summoning book and his release of Vermeil was an act of fate or destiny, potentially orchestrated by Vermeil’s acquaintance, Fatima.
      • Upon joining the student council, Alto became the youngest member in its history.
        • Vermeil has stated that Alto may eventually cease to be human and transform into a devil like her, attributing this possibility to their shared bond and the fact that he now possesses her demon heart.
