Abraham Gray

Abraham Gray (エイブラハム・グレイ, Eiburahamu Gurei) is the tritagonist of Angels of Death. He serves as the floor master of B2, where he employs drug-induced illusions to observe and analyze the behavior of those he deems “sacrifices.” While outwardly calm and composed, Gray is arguably one of the most influential antagonists in the series, as the rules he established for the experimental building directly led to Rachel Gardner being classified as a sacrifice despite her status as one of his “Angels.” Over the course of the story, however, Gray’s role shifts; after the events of Episode 3, he begins aiding Rachel, continuing to assist her throughout Episode 4.

Appearance in Anime

Little is known about Gray’s early life, except that he spent his youth closely observing people who devoted themselves to God. Fascinated by their unwavering faith, he began to question how such commitment could endure hardship and whether God truly existed at all. This deep curiosity ultimately led him to become a reverend.

Serving in a small-town church, Gray quickly gained a devoted following, admired for his eloquent sermons and uncanny ability to “see through” people’s hearts. Unbeknownst to his congregation, he achieved this insight by discreetly administering mind-altering drugs to reveal their innermost selves. Eventually, his curiosity about faith reached its peak, and he conceived an ambitious experiment: to determine the true meaning of religious belief by subjecting those who claimed faith in God to a series of life-or-death trials.

To execute this plan, Gray established a multi-floor facility where the trials would take place. He envisioned himself as the “eyes of God,” appointing ruthless serial killers as his “Angels” to deliver judgment, while the participants dubbed “Sacrifices” would serve as the subjects of his grand experiment. His biggest challenge lay in finding the right “Angels”: killers capable of taking lives without hesitation.

Several years before the events of the main story, Gray was approached by Daniel Dickens and Catherine Ward, who had learned of him through a religiously fanatical prisoner. Using his drugs to assess them, Gray uncovered Danny’s true nature and deemed him suitable for the role of an Angel. With Danny’s assistance, Gray was able to recruit the remaining floor masters, allowing his long-planned experiment to finally begin.

Appearance

Gray is a tall, seemingly middle-aged man with neatly slicked-back black hair. His most striking feature is his eyes, which are entirely white with no visible pupils, giving him an unsettling and otherworldly presence. He has fair skin and typically dresses in a formal, almost ceremonial manner. His attire consists of a long purple cloak with gold trim, worn over a black suit vest and a crisp white button-up shirt. He completes the look with black dress trousers, polished shoes, and a gold cross necklace that rests prominently over his chest.

Personality

Gray is an articulate and composed individual, capable of captivating his audience with his commanding presence and carefully chosen words. Beneath his refined manner lies a cold, analytical nature, devoid of mercy. Although he serves as a reverend, Gray holds no personal belief in the existence of God. Instead, he adopts the role out of deep fascination with humanity’s devotion to faith, treating religion as a subject of study rather than worship. His insatiable thirst for knowledge drives him to pursue answers at any cost, even if it means orchestrating trials that claim human lives.

He speaks in a formal, almost Shakespearean style, favoring archaic expressions such as “thou,” “thy,” and “whilst,” which further adds to his enigmatic and imposing behavior.

Role in the Story

Gray oversees Floor B2, serving as the final trial before a sacrifice can reach the building’s exit. His floor is designed to overwhelm intruders with powerful, drug-induced illusions that force them to confront their sins, doubts, and inner truths. Unlike the other floor masters, Gray’s purpose is not simply to kill but to observe, study, and draw conclusions from how his subjects respond to spiritual and psychological pressure.

When Rachel Gardner and Isaac Foster reach his domain, Gray tests them both individually, attempting to provoke their deepest convictions and uncover the sincerity of their promises to one another. Although initially positioned as an obstacle, Gray becomes a reluctant ally after witnessing the unwavering resolve between Ray and Zack. By the conclusion of Episode 3, he aids Rachel in her journey, continuing this support into Episode 4, while still maintaining his detached role as an observer of human faith and morality.

Relationships

Isaac Foster – Gray sees Zack as an unpredictable yet fitting “Angel” for his experiment, embodying raw human instinct and violence. He is curious about Zack’s relationship with Rachel, finding their bond a compelling subject for observation. Though he does not intervene directly in their confrontations with other floor masters, he subtly manipulates circumstances to see whether Zack’s actions will align with Rachel’s faith-driven goals.

Rachel Gardner – Gray views Rachel as a unique subject among the sacrifices due to her calm, devout demeanor and unwavering belief in her own purpose. While he initially places her through rigorous psychological trials to test the authenticity of her faith, he gradually develops a respect for her resolve. By the later stages of the story, Gray transitions from being her examiner to an ally, offering her guidance and information to aid her in fulfilling her pact with Zack.

Daniel Dickens – Gray recruited Danny after determining through his drug-induced interrogation that Danny met his criteria for an “Angel.” He recognizes Danny’s obsessive tendencies toward Rachel but regards them as an expected outcome of his chosen participants’ unstable psyches. While they maintain a professional relationship within the experiment, Gray keeps a careful eye on Danny’s behavior to ensure it serves the trial’s purpose.

Lucy – Gray became acquainted with Cathy during his search for suitable “Angels,” recruiting her after being impressed by her unwavering confidence in her own sense of justice. He permits her elaborate punishments and theatrical floor design despite their extravagance, viewing them as a distinct method of testing sinners. Gray occasionally chides her for excessive spending, but values her role in the experiment.

Legacy

Abraham Gray stands out as one of the most enigmatic and influential figures in Angels of Death, serving both as an orchestrator of the events and as a philosophical anchor for the narrative. His experiment is the foundation upon which the story unfolds, shaping the trials, moral dilemmas, and relationships between the “Angels” and “Sacrifices.”

While he begins as a distant, manipulative overseer, Gray’s shift toward aiding Rachel in the later episodes adds depth to his role, showing a rare moment of personal involvement and subtle empathy. His analytical approach to faith, morality, and human nature leaves a lasting thematic imprint on the series, as his dialogues and trials challenge not only the characters’ beliefs but also the audience’s perception of good, evil, and divine justice.

Among fans, Gray is remembered for his distinctive Shakespearean speech, his calm yet commanding presence, and his ambiguous morality. He remains one of the few characters who can be viewed simultaneously as an antagonist, a guide, and an observer, making him a pivotal figure in the philosophical underpinnings of Angels of Death.

Trivia

    • He is the only floor master without a nickname, being referred to solely by his last name in official media and as “Reverend” by most characters in the game.
      • Because his eyes are depicted without visible pupils, many fans speculate that he may be blind, though this is never confirmed.
