Rachel Gardner

Rachel Gardner (レイチェル・ガードナー, Reicheru Gādonā), commonly referred to as Ray, is the main protagonist of the video game, manga, and anime series Satsuriku no Tenshi (Angels of Death). She is the first playable character in the game and is introduced as a young girl who awakens in a mysterious building with no memory of how or why she arrived there. Over the course of the story, it is revealed that she is the master of the B1 floor.

Appearance in Anime

Rachel is a 13-year-old girl of small stature with a petite build, hip-length blonde hair, and large blue eyes. A single loose strand of hair hangs over her face, usually falling slightly to the right. Her eye color varies in saturation throughout the game: at the end of Episode 3, they appear a much darker blue, while in Episode 4 they display a visible gradient from dark blue to light blue.

She typically wears a black-and-white horizontally striped shirt that nearly covers her black shorts, paired with a loose white cardigan. Her outfit is completed with clunky black boots featuring silver buckles, a plain black choker, and a small black messenger bag with a triangular flap.

Personality

Rachel is initially portrayed as an unusually calm and composed girl, a demeanor largely rooted in her desire to die. Several floor masters describe her as ruthless, selfish, and manipulative, willing to do whatever is necessary to achieve her goals. However, this characterization is misleading, as Rachel lacks a conventional understanding of human morality and does not possess inherently cruel intentions.

She exhibits difficulty with empathy and struggles to express or interpret emotions. While she is capable of experiencing fear, anger, compassion, and happiness, such feelings are rare, fleeting, and generally subdued. Rachel does not feign emotions she does not feel, and her expressions are typically genuine. As the story progresses, particularly in the later episodes, she becomes more outwardly expressive.

Rachel holds an unwavering fixation on the existence of God, which deeply unsettles her when Gray suggests that God would not accept her oath with Zack, and when Zack himself expresses disbelief in God’s existence. Her need for divine validation becomes so intense that she begins to perceive Zack as a godlike figure.

With Zack’s help, Rachel eventually confronts the reality of her actions and abandons her distorted worldview, realizing that her true desire is not divine acceptance but simply to be wanted by someone, both in life and in death. Following this realization, she begins to display more typical emotions and forms a deep, mutual bond with Zack.

History

Rachel Gardner was raised by her unemployed mother and her father, a police officer. Her parents despised each other, often engaging in nightly arguments, and both openly blamed one another for Rachel’s lack of empathy. They did not shield her from their conflict, subjecting her to verbal and physical abuse.

Her father squandered most of the family’s income on alcohol and prostitutes, leaving their home in disrepair, cluttered with empty bottles, unpaid bills, and broken appliances. As a result, Rachel spent much of her time away from home, wandering alleys. While her formal education is not explicitly detailed, her literacy, writing ability, and knowledge of basic chemistry suggest that she attended school.

One evening, Rachel encountered a stray puppy and wished to adopt it. Returning home to ask her parents’ permission, she found them in the midst of another argument. Her father stormed out, accusing her of being a psychopath, while her mother retreated to another room. Rachel followed her and overheard her mother muttering about killing her father with a “secret weapon,” which she hid in a drawer. When Rachel attempted to speak with her, her mother dismissed her, compared her to her father, and slapped her before leaving.

Curious, Rachel examined the “secret weapon” and discovered it was a handgun. She then went to find the puppy, attempting to catch it in a box. After being bitten, the events that followed are unclear, but the puppy ended up dead, its body shredded and later sewn back together by Rachel, who placed it in a box in her room.

Later that night, after another prolonged argument between her parents, Rachel heard a scream and rushed to the kitchen. She witnessed her father repeatedly stabbing her mother, who collapsed on the floor. When he noticed Rachel, he attempted to attack her as well. Fleeing upstairs, Rachel retrieved the handgun and, after asking him to become her “perfect father,” shot him in self-defense. She then sewed her parents’ corpses together into doll-like figures, creating what she considered the closest thing to a “perfect” family.

Following this incident, Rachel was institutionalized. Authorities feared she might harm others in pursuit of making them “perfect,” a suspicion reinforced when she killed another puppy at the orphanage after it refused to bond with her.

At the institution, she was assigned to Dr. Daniel “Danny” Dickens as her therapist. Danny became fascinated with Rachel’s emotionless blue eyes, which reminded him of his late mother’s. Using his authority, he removed Rachel from the institution and brought her to the building where the series’ events take place. Despite Reverend Gray’s objections, Danny persuaded him to grant Rachel control of Floor B1, making her its master. Rachel lived there for some time, with Danny assisting her in setting traps and even retrieving her parents’ corpses for her.

Her life on B1 changed when she found a Bible left by a nun who had been killed on the floor. After reading it in full, she developed a strong faith in God but also suffered a mental breakdown, viewing herself as a sinner. Concerned, Gray confronted Danny, who tried to hide her deteriorating condition. Rachel soon appeared to lose her memory, claiming she did not know where she was, and her eyes regained a brighter appearance.

Gray presented two options: kill Rachel or alter her memories and release her into the outside world. Danny argued that she would be unsafe outside and suggested she become a “sacrifice” instead. It is implied Gray consented, as Rachel was sent to Floor B6 while still unconscious. Before her transfer, Danny packed a handgun into her bag.

Role in the Story

Rachel serves as the central viewpoint character for much of Satsuriku no Tenshi (Angels of Death), with the narrative following her journey through the building’s multiple floors. After awakening on Floor B6 with no memory of her arrival, she encounters Isaac “Zack” Foster and forms a pact in which he promises to kill her once they escape. Together, they ascend through the building, facing each floor’s master and overcoming various traps, puzzles, and psychological trials.

As the story unfolds, her interactions with Zack, the other floor masters, and her resurfacing memories reveal her troubled past, her fixation on God, and the reasons she became the B1 floor master. Through her relationship with Zack, Rachel undergoes significant emotional growth, shifting from apathy and self-destructive resolve toward a more complex understanding of herself and others. Her arc culminates in her taking responsibility for their shared oath, ensuring Zack is not burdened with the promise to kill her while maintaining her own agency in deciding her fate.

Relationships

Isaac “Zack” Foster – Rachel meets Zack in the building and proposes a pact: in exchange for her help in escaping, he must kill her as promised, swearing this oath to God. Initially, Rachel follows him solely so he can fulfill this agreement, often reminding him of it—something that frustrates and irritates Zack. Over time, however, she grows emotionally closer to him. Rachel begins to break through her own apathy when his safety is at risk, eventually realizing she wants him to kill her not only because of his oath, but also because of the bond they share. Unlike most people in Zack’s life, Rachel does not see him merely as a monster, tool, or killer, but as a person, prompting her desire to understand him better. For a time, her distorted worldview leads her to perceive Zack as a godlike figure; when he rejects this notion, she becomes so distraught that she even attempts to kill him to make him “hers.” With Zack’s help, she confronts her warped beliefs and begins to care for him genuinely. By the end of Episode 4, she chooses to bear the weight of their oath herself so that Zack will not be burdened by breaking his promise, demonstrating her concern for his feelings over her own fate.

Dr. Daniel “Danny” Dickens – Rachel first meets Danny as her assigned counselor at the institution. He becomes immediately captivated by her blank blue eyes, which he associates with those of his late mother, and grows obsessively attached to her. Using his authority, Danny removes her from the institution and brings her to the building, hoping to keep her with him in isolation so he can always see her eyes. Although Rachel initially accepts this arrangement out of apathy, she later makes it clear she does not reciprocate his feelings and does not wish to remain secluded. Danny’s obsession drives him to extreme lengths to keep her, even attempting to kill her when she ultimately rejects him.

Legacy

Rachel Gardner has become one of the most recognizable characters from Satsuriku no Tenshi (Angels of Death), serving as the emotional and narrative anchor of the story. Her complex psychological profile, tragic backstory, and evolving relationship with Zack have made her a focal point for analysis among fans and critics. The dynamic between Rachel and Zack is frequently cited as one of the series’ defining elements, contributing to the game’s popularity and the subsequent success of its manga and anime adaptations.

Her character has inspired official merchandise, including figures, apparel, and accessories, as well as a significant amount of fan art and cosplay. In fan discussions, Rachel is often noted for subverting the typical “damsel in distress” archetype, instead presenting a morally ambiguous, introspective, and emotionally layered protagonist whose motivations challenge traditional genre expectations.
