Tomoe

Tomoe (巴, also rendered as トモエ) is one of the two main female deuteragonists in the series Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy. Formerly known as Muteki “Shin” (無敵「蜃」, meaning “Invincible ‘Shin’”), she is one of the powerful Greater Dragons residing in the world ruled by the Goddess. Following a confrontation with the protagonist, Makoto Misumi, Tomoe enters into a contract with him and now serves as one of his most loyal and formidable companions.

Appearance in Anime

Tomoe is generally easy-going and curious, often seeking out new experiences and taking great interest in elements of Earth’s Edo period culture particularly through Makoto Misumi’s memories. This inquisitive and energetic outlook stands in stark contrast to her earlier, more apathetic and indifferent perspective on the world prior to her contract with Makoto.

She frequently displays a bold and masculine behavior, often exuding confidence and authority. However, in rare moments especially when blushing or acting bashful she reveals a surprisingly feminine and delicate side, which those around her find both striking and unexpected.

Despite her strength and status as a Greater Dragon, Tomoe is not always serious and tends to shirk her responsibilities. She has a notorious tendency to binge-watch shows and visual media from Makoto’s memories, sometimes neglecting her duties to do so. This habit often frustrates her peers, particularly Mio and Shiki. Tomoe also has a comical fear that Mio might consume or destroy the digital content she treasures, which leads to frequent childish squabbles between the two over access to Makoto’s mental “library” of entertainment.

Tomoe holds deep respect and affection for Makoto, both as her master and as the first person to form a contract with her. She takes immense pride in this role and often acts as an elder sister figure to his other followers, frequently reprimanding them in a stern but caring manner. She has expressed a strong desire to earn Makoto’s affection and occasionally behaves flirtatiously or suggestively in pursuit of his attention.

Beyond her personal interests, Tomoe is deeply fascinated by the unpredictable nature of the world Makoto is shaping. She often recruits intriguing races and individuals into her own Demi-Plane, driven by a desire to observe and influence their evolution to keep things “interesting.”

Appearance

In her human form, Tomoe appears as an extraordinarily beautiful young woman with waist-length, wavy turquoise-blue hair that has a mist-like quality. Her hair is typically styled in a high ponytail, secured with multiple golden hairpins, and features a long chest-length strand draped over the left side of her face. She also has short bangs that frame both sides of her face. Her striking red, reptilian eyes and well-defined, curvaceous figure further emphasize her unique and commanding presence.

Tomoe dresses in a traditional Japanese kimono, primarily green with purple accents. The kimono is open at the front, revealing a white undershirt beneath it. She wears a red belt with a gold buckle around her waist, a red scarf around her neck, and red-and-white leg warmers along with white footwear. Gold chains are used as accessories, adding flair to her ensemble. She carries herself and speaks in a distinctly masculine manner, often giving off a tomboyish impression.

In her original form as a Greater Dragon, Tomoe takes the shape of a majestic Eastern-style dragon. Her dragon form features long, flowing hair resembling mist, elongated whiskers, and prominent antler-like horns. She possesses sharp teeth, piercing reptilian eyes, and four clawed toes on each foot. Her body is long, serpentine, and graceful, true to the traditional image of Oriental dragons.

History

Tomoe is known as one of the most powerful Greater Dragons in the Goddess’s world, second only to the Dragon Superior, Root. Her unmatched battle record earned her the title “Invincible”, as she has never been defeated in combat. This reputation largely stems from her unique ability Asora, a powerful technique that sets her apart even among Greater Dragons. Her true name remains unknown to the public, and she is often referred to as the “Invincible Dragon” or the “Mirage Dragon” due to her formidable strength and elusive presence.

In the distant past, Tomoe engaged in battle with the legendary Black Spider of Calamity, who abruptly ended the confrontation after losing interest, prompting Tomoe not to pursue the fight further. Disillusioned and weary of the world, she eventually withdrew from worldly affairs and entered a long period of hibernation in her cave, located deep within the Wasteland.

It is implied that Tomoe may have received her powers or some form of divine influence from Futsu and/or Root, though the exact nature of this origin remains unclear. Before meeting Makoto Misumi, her outlook on life was defined by apathy and detachment. She viewed the world as mundane and unworthy of engagement, often spending centuries in slumber to escape the monotony of existence.

Equipment

Tomoe wields a pair of powerful katana, each with distinct properties and origins, reflecting her skill in swordsmanship and her affinity for combat.

Shirafuji
A short katana carried by Tomoe. While its specific elemental attribute is not detailed, it contrasts with her other blade, Yae Kuro Ryu, in both form and elemental affinity. The two swords are considered complementary.

Yae Kuro Ryu
A long katana crafted by the Elder Dwarves from a mysterious, resilient tree capable of withstanding mountain-level fires. The wood used is harder than steel and highly tempered, rendering it nearly indestructible by fire. Yae Kuro Ryu possesses a fire element and serves as the elemental opposite to Shirafuji. Its layered black finish and formidable durability mark it as one of Tomoe’s most treasured weapons.

One of these katanas likely Yae Kuro Ryu contains a special ability known as [Marking]. When activated under specific conditions, this ability allows the user to slash a designated target regardless of distance. However, the magic consumption required to use this effect is significant especially if the ability is used independently rather than channeled through the weapon itself.

Relationships

Makoto Misumi
Tomoe holds a deep admiration and loyalty toward Makoto, whom she finds endlessly fascinating due to his unique origins and rich memories of Earth, particularly Japanese samurai period dramas. As his first contracted follower, she takes great pride in her position and is fiercely protective of him. Like Mio, Tomoe reacts with intense aggression toward anyone who disrespects or harms Makoto, regardless of their strength.

After Makoto’s first abduction, Tomoe experienced panic and fear at the thought of losing him, which significantly deepened her emotional attachment. Following that event, her affection for him began to take on more romantic and physical dimensions. She often seeks to strengthen their bond, including encouraging Komoe, a child-like being born from their mana to refer to Makoto as “father” (お父さま, Otou-sama), much to Mio’s frustration.

Eventually, her relationship with Makoto becomes physical. After Mio and Makoto consummate their relationship, Tomoe who had made a prior arrangement with Mio to follow her approaches Makoto the next morning and initiates intimacy, leading to a rivalry-fueled confrontation between the two women. The event becomes public knowledge within the Demi-Plane. In later chapters, notably Chapter 318 of the web novel, Tomoe openly expresses her desire to have a child with Makoto after confirming his fondness for children.

Mio
Tomoe and Mio share a competitive and often chaotic relationship, frequently clashing over their affections for Makoto and their access to his memories. Despite their rivalry, Tomoe treats Mio more like a younger sister than an adversary and often attempts to guide her in the proper conduct of a servant. She regularly teases Mio first for failing to seduce Makoto, and later for her gluttonous behavior in public. Though their arguments can cause collateral damage, their relationship is ultimately built on trust and shared loyalty to their master.

Shiki
Compared to her dynamic with Mio, Tomoe’s relationship with Shiki is less volatile but still marked by sharp reprimands. She tends to be stern and teasing toward him, especially when he fails to meet expectations or becomes passive in the face of her and Mio’s antics. Tomoe occasionally mocks Shiki for his perceived lack of assertiveness, though her tone often carries a hint of elder sibling care.

Tamaki
Tomoe is openly suspicious of Tamaki. Her distrust stems from the fact that she cannot access Tamaki’s memories, a stark contrast to her usual ability which makes it difficult for Tomoe to read her intentions or understand her goals. This limitation leaves Tomoe uneasy and cautious around her.

Trivia

    • Tomoe’s original name, Shèn (蜃), is written using Chinese characters and is likely inspired by the mythical Chinese creature Shen, a shapeshifting dragon or sea monster believed to create mirages. This caused confusion for Makoto Misumi upon hearing the name, as “shèn” can also refer to a giant clam in Chinese mythology.
      • The name Tomoe (巴) was given to her by Makoto, and is most likely a reference to Tomoe Gozen, a legendary female samurai from Japanese history.
      • Tomoe’s bold, masculine mannerisms and direct approach to conversation initially made Makoto feel uneasy during the first few weeks after she adopted her human form.
      • Despite her occasionally immature behavior and obsession with samurai culture, Tomoe is highly intelligent, charismatic, and adventurous. Her whimsical sense of honor and strong leadership have inspired loyalty in many of her allies.
      • She often nervously laughs whenever Makoto surprises her with feats she finds unbelievable, a recurring reaction that highlights her admiration for him.
      • Tomoe is a skilled user of illusory magic, often tailoring her illusions to expose the hidden or perverse desires of her targets whom she tends to view with disdain.
      • She possesses the ability to read minds and access memories, which gives her a significant strategic advantage and adds to her mystique.
      • One of her greatest fears is that Makoto may one day return to Earth, leaving her behind and plunging her life back into boredom. This fear later shifts into a desire to enrich her world by bringing samurai-themed culture and entertainment to it.
      • In Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy Season 2, Episodes 7 and 8, Tomoe is temporarily voiced by Brianna Roberts in the English dub. This was due to regular voice actress Monica Rial taking a brief hiatus following the passing of her mother, Donna Boyd Jean Rial, on February 29, 2024, due to melanoma.
