Mizore Shirayuki

Mizore Shirayuki (白雪 みぞれ, Shirayuki Mizore) is a supporting protagonist in the Rosario + Vampire series. A Yuki-Onna (snow woman), Mizore is a student at Yōkai Academy who eventually becomes a member of the school’s Newspaper Club. She is one of several girls who develop romantic feelings for the main protagonist, Tsukune Aono. Initially portrayed as a quiet and reclusive stalker, Mizore obsessively follows Tsukune, often appearing suddenly and watching him from afar. Over time, her character is developed more deeply, revealing a sensitive, loyal, and emotionally vulnerable side beneath her aloof exterior.

Appearance in Anime

Mizore Shirayuki is known for her distinct and cool-toned appearance, reflecting her identity as a Yuki-Onna. When she is first introduced, Mizore has long, light purple hair and piercing blue eyes, which contain subtle hints of purple near the top of the iris. Notably, her pupils are also blue rather than black. As the series progresses, she cuts her hair to shoulder length, a symbolic gesture representing personal growth and the easing of emotional burdens. This change occurs around the time she becomes more actively involved in the Newspaper Club and begins integrating into Tsukune Aono’s circle of close companions.

One of her most recognizable traits is the lollipop she constantly holds in her mouth, which helps regulate her internal body temperature due to her icy nature.

Mizore typically does not wear the standard Yōkai Academy school uniform. Instead, her signature outfit consists of a light brown pleated checkered skirt, a white sweatshirt with long dark blue sleeves, and a black singlet underneath. She accessorizes with a yellow pendant, striped purple-and-dark purple thigh-high stockings, white shoes, and a belt loosely tied around her left thigh. Though rarely shown, she is known to keep a journal about Tsukune in the front pouch of her sweatshirt.

When she activates her Yuki-Onna powers, Mizore’s physical appearance remains largely unchanged. However, her hands become encased in ice, forming claw-like extensions, and her hair sometimes transforms into ice-like strands, emphasizing her control over cold and frost in combat situations.

Personality

Mizore Shirayuki is initially portrayed as a lonely and emotionally distant individual, shaped by her past experiences of misunderstanding and betrayal. During her early days at Yōkai Academy, she developed feelings for her teacher, Okuto Kotsubo, only to be manipulated by him. When she discovered his true intentions, Mizore retaliated by freezing him, which led to widespread rumors and further social isolation. Following this incident, she was withdrawn and depressive until her encounter with Tsukune Aono, whose kindness helped her open up and find a place among his circle of friends.

Though outwardly calm and reserved, Mizore is deeply emotional, especially when it comes to Tsukune. Her love for him becomes obsessive to the point of comedy, with her often declaring a desire to have children with him sometimes even suggesting she would do so by force if necessary. Despite her stoic appearance, she is prone to blushing, daydreaming, and showing genuine affection during private or tender moments with Tsukune, whom she occasionally refers to as her “Beloved.”

Mizore is also known for her stalker-like behavior, a running gag in the series. She frequently appears in bizarre or unlikely places such as bushes, lockers, or under desks to observe Tsukune. These moments are often played for humor, emphasizing her socially awkward but endearing attachment to him.

She frequently clashes with Kurumu Kurono, another of Tsukune’s admirers, resulting in comedic arguments or minor fistfights. Despite their rivalry, the two girls develop a surprisingly close friendship. This is especially evident when Kurumu comforts Mizore after she is kissed against her will by Miyabi Fujisaki, preventing her from making a desperate decision.

Although she tends to suppress her emotions, Mizore occasionally reveals flashes of possessiveness and insecurity. She becomes especially anxious when Tsukune forms new friendships, once jokingly threatening to stab him if one more person competed for his affection. Her composure slips entirely when under magical influence, such as Lilith’s Mirror, where she exhibits uncharacteristically perverted behavior openly flaunting her body and describing her appearance in exaggerated, comedic terms.

Despite her eccentricities and obsessive tendencies, Mizore ultimately emerges as a loyal, sensitive, and caring character. Her quiet determination and emotional growth reflect a deep desire to be accepted and loved, both as a friend and a romantic partner.

Powers

Yuki-Onna Physiology
As a Yuki-Onna, a supernatural being from Japanese folklore associated with snow and ice, Mizore possesses a natural affinity for cold temperatures and icy environments. She is completely unaffected by frigid climates that would be hazardous to humans or other yōkai, allowing her to function at full strength even in subzero conditions.

Cryokinesis
Mizore’s primary ability is her near-complete control over ice and cold, a power known as cryokinesis. She can freeze water at will and manipulate it into a variety of offensive and defensive forms. Her attacks are entirely ice-based, and she is immune to water-based abilities, rendering such attacks ineffective against her.

Through rigorous training particularly under the guidance of Ginei Morioka Mizore enhances her mastery over her abilities. She becomes capable of freezing and controlling entire bodies of water in her vicinity. At the height of her power, her hair transforms into strands of ice, and she can manifest ice claws, projectiles, and other crystalline constructs for combat. Her ice manipulation is both highly versatile and visually distinct, often serving as a reflection of her emotional state in battle.

Etymology

The name Mizore (みぞれ) is written in hiragana and directly translates to “sleet” in Japanese, referring to a mixture of snow and rain. This aligns closely with her identity as a Yuki-Onna, a snow woman rooted in Japanese folklore. Her name may also carry symbolic weight, as the sound of “Mizore” resembles the English word “misery,” which reflects her isolated and melancholic personality when she is first introduced in the series.

Unlike the character Mizore in Pugyuru, whose name is written in katakana, this Mizore’s name is spelled using hiragana, a stylistic choice that gives her name a softer, more traditional tone. In fact, Mizore and her mother, Tsurara Shirayuki, are the only characters in the series whose given names are spelled in hiragana, setting them apart visually and linguistically.

Her surname Shirayuki (白雪) combines 白 (shira or shiro), meaning “white,” and 雪 (yuki), meaning “snow.” Together, it can be interpreted as “white snow” or “snow white.” While this resembles the name of the Western fairytale princess Snow White, it does not carry the same connotation unless appended with the suffix -hime (姫), meaning “princess.” In Japanese, the more accurate translation for “princess” would be ōjo (王女), the feminine counterpart to ōji (王子), or “prince.”

In early chapters of the Rosario + Vampire manga, Mizore is classified as an “Abominable Snow Woman,” though this was later corrected to the more culturally accurate term “Snow Fairy.” In the anime adaptation, she is occasionally referred to as the “Ice Queen,” but the proper and traditional English equivalent of her species is “Snow Woman,” derived directly from the term Yuki-Onna.

Relationships

Tsukune Aono
Tsukune is the central focus of Mizore’s affection throughout the series. After he saves her from her manipulative teacher, Okuto Kotsubo, Mizore becomes infatuated with him, viewing him as kind, trustworthy, and different from others who judged or used her. Her feelings for Tsukune quickly evolve into an intense, almost obsessive love. She often appears near him unannounced, follows him secretly, and occasionally makes bold declarations—such as wanting to have children with him.

Despite her extreme devotion and possessiveness, Mizore’s feelings for Tsukune are genuine and pure at heart. She is fiercely loyal and protective of him, even risking herself during battles. She frequently calls him “my beloved,” and is known to spy on him during physical education or tender moments, blushing and praising him quietly. Mizore’s love also serves as a source of both comedy and emotional development throughout the story.

Kurumu Kurono
Though Mizore and Kurumu Kurono are often depicted as rivals due to their mutual love for Tsukune, the two girls share a complex but ultimately supportive friendship. They frequently engage in comedic arguments, bickering, and minor physical altercations. However, beneath the rivalry lies genuine care. For example, when Mizore is forcefully kissed by Miyabi Fujisaki and becomes emotionally distraught, it is Kurumu who comforts her and prevents her from harming herself. Over time, their relationship softens, with both girls acknowledging their shared struggle for Tsukune’s affection and bonding through it.

Moka Akashiya
Mizore has a respectful relationship with Moka Akashiya, though she sees her as a powerful romantic rival for Tsukune’s heart. The two initially clash when Mizore is introduced, but they come to an understanding and cooperate as members of the Newspaper Club. Despite her jealousy, Mizore does not harbor ill will toward Moka and often fights alongside her in group battles.

Tsurara Shirayuki
Mizore’s mother, Tsurara Shirayuki, shares her daughter’s Yuki-Onna heritage and plays a role in the storyline involving their home village. Tsurara pushes for Mizore to marry Miyabi, believing it necessary for the survival of their bloodline. However, Mizore’s refusal to follow her mother’s wishes, and her decision to choose her own path, marks a pivotal moment of growth and independence in their relationship.

Ginei Morioka
Mizore receives training in cryokinesis and yōkai combat from Ginei Morioka, a fellow student and werewolf. Although their relationship is not deeply explored, Ginei acts as a mentor to Mizore, helping her improve her control over her powers.
