Moka Akashiya

Moka Akashiya (赤夜 萌香, Akashiya Moka) is the main female protagonist of the anime and manga series Rosario + Vampire. A vampiress enrolled at Yōkai Academy, a secret school for supernatural beings Moka is the first student Tsukune Aono encounters upon entering the yōkai realm. She quickly takes a liking to him, initially drawn by the irresistible taste of his blood, to which she becomes notably addicted. However, their relationship deepens after Tsukune attempts to protect her from a hostile classmate, Saizou Komiya.

Moka’s personality is governed by the Rosario Cross she wears around her neck, which seals away her true nature. When the seal is removed, her Inner Moka, a powerful and coldly confident version of herself is released. In contrast to the kind, sweet-natured Outer Moka, Inner Moka is assertive, prideful, and combative, yet she acknowledges the gentler side of her personality, once urging Tsukune to “be kind to the other Moka.” Notably, Tsukune is the only one capable of removing the Rosario Cross, making his bond with Moka uniquely significant.

Appearance in Inner Form

Moka Akashiya is widely regarded as one of the most attractive students at Yōkai Academy, with her natural beauty frequently drawing attention from the male student body. Her popularity often causes tension, particularly with other female students such as Kurumu Kurono, and becomes the subject of a recurring gag in which numerous characters attempt to win her affection. However, Moka makes it clear that her heart belongs solely to Tsukune Aono, valuing his kindness and bravery above all else.

At school, Moka wears the standard Yōkai Academy uniform, though she modifies it slightly to accommodate the Rosario Cross she wears at her neck. Unlike other students, she leaves her collar untucked and does not wear the traditional bow tie, allowing space for the large choker-like Rosario clasp. She is occasionally seen carrying a brown suitcase as part of her role in the Newspaper Club.

Due to her dual nature, Moka’s appearance changes when the Rosario Cross is removed, transitioning between her “Outer” and “Inner” forms. Both forms are consistently described as exceptionally beautiful, captivating nearly every male student at the academy.

In her sealed “Outer” form, Moka has fair skin, knee-length pink hair swept to the right, green eyes, and a soft, gentle expression that complements her warm and approachable personality. Her features are delicate, with full pink lips and a girl-next-door charm. As a vampire, she retains visible fangs, though they are less prominent in this form. The Rosary, always attached to a black choker around her neck, is the artifact responsible for maintaining this persona. It is later revealed that the Outer Moka is a manifestation of her mother, Akasha Bloodriver, created to protect the true Moka during her childhood. The two share similar physical features, including hair and eye color.

Upon the removal of the Rosario Cross, Moka reverts to her “Inner” form, revealing her true self. This version retains the same hairstyle and length, but her hair becomes silver, and her eyes transform into a more menacing appearance with red irises and slit pupils. Her facial expressions shift to reflect her dominant personality, serious, confident, and sometimes arrogant. Her vampire traits are more pronounced, including sharper fangs. In the anime adaptation, her figure is depicted as more voluptuous, with noticeably larger breasts and hips that strain her school uniform. Her blouse reveals some cleavage, while her skirt exposes more of her lower body. She also appears slightly taller than her Outer form.

Later in the series, after receiving Tsukune’s blood and with the support of their friends, Moka gains the ability to stabilize her Shinso vampire powers. She develops a “Creation” ability that allows her to generate armor-like features similar to Tsukune’s. This includes metallic coverings on her arms, legs, and shoulders resembling gauntlets and greaves. She also gains the “Wealth of Power” ability, which grants her bat-like wings, albeit smaller than Tsukune’s, that extend from her upper back.

By the conclusion of the series, Moka no longer requires the Rosario Cross to regulate her personality. Though the Rosario is gone, she continues to wear her choker. Her attitude has softened, resembling the gentle Outer Moka, and the tip of her hair is noted by Tsukune to have developed a faint pink hue symbolizing the fusion of her two selves into a unified identity.

Personality

Moka Akashiya possesses a gentle, kind-hearted, and soft-spoken demeanor in her “Outer” form. She is polite, friendly, and at times somewhat naïve often drawn into difficult or dangerous situations despite her good intentions. Initially, Moka harbors a distrust of humans, but this gradually fades as she spends time with Tsukune Aono, the only human at Yōkai Academy. Her perception of humanity changes largely due to his kindness and selflessness.

Her affection for Tsukune begins with a strong craving for his blood, which she finds especially delicious, but eventually deepens into genuine emotional attachment. As their bond strengthens, she becomes more considerate of his well-being, especially when she notices that her frequent blood-drinking weakens him. When Tsukune offers his blood willingly to keep her healthy, Moka expresses gratitude and warmth, and their relationship evolves into mutual care and affection. She becomes visibly flustered and bashful when others mention their closeness or suggest romantic feelings between them. Over time, Moka openly confesses her love for Tsukune on multiple occasions, such as during his birthday and in moments of emotional vulnerability.

Moka is extremely protective of Tsukune, often placing his safety above her own. She even goes as far as to say she would leave the academy if he were expelled, unable to bear the thought of being separated from him. Despite her romantic rivalry with Kurumu Kurono, Moka maintains a close friendship with her, and Kurumu even refers to Moka as her best friend.

There is a recurring gag in both the anime and manga where moments that appear to lead to a kiss between Moka and Tsukune end with her biting his neck instead to drink his blood. Though comical, these scenes often reflect her inner conflict between romantic desire and her vampiric instincts.

Moka’s personality dynamic is further complicated by her dual existence. Before the Rosario Cross sealed away her Inner self, she had a turbulent relationship with her younger sister, Kokoa Shuzen, who longed for her true sister to return and resented the sealed Outer version. Kokoa often attacked Outer Moka to force out the Inner personality. Inner Moka, while loving her sister, finds Kokoa’s obsessive behavior overwhelming, while Outer Moka is often exasperated by her sister’s aggressive tendencies.

Despite their contrasting temperaments, Inner and Outer Moka share a deep bond and mutual respect. Inner Moka ensures that Outer Moka takes care of herself monitoring her eating, studying, and general well-being while Outer Moka confides in Inner Moka about her feelings and concerns. They often reflect on their mutual love for Tsukune, and Tsukune, in turn, affirms that he cares for both personalities equally. As the story progresses, their relationship matures into one of unity, with both personalities seeking to eventually become whole.

Equipment

Rosario Cross (formerly)
Moka once wore a Rosario Cross around her neck, a silver ornament that served as a powerful sealing mechanism. Unlike traditional silver, which is harmful to vampires, the Rosario did not cause her physical pain upon contact. Instead, it suppressed her yōkai energy, significantly weakening her powers and allowing her gentler “Outer” personality to take control.

The Rosario was created by Akasha Bloodriver, Moka’s mother, to protect her daughter from the influence of Alucard’s blood and to conceal her true vampire nature. Only Tsukune Aono possessed the unique ability to remove the Rosario, temporarily unleashing Moka’s “Inner” self during times of crisis. By the end of the series, the Rosario is no longer required, symbolizing Moka’s full integration of her dual identities.

Weaknesses

Lack of Blood
As a vampire, Moka’s physical and supernatural abilities are directly tied to her blood supply. If she loses a significant amount of blood whether through injury or by transferring it to another her strength is severely diminished. Prolonged deprivation of blood can lead to extreme fatigue and vulnerability.

Water
One of Moka’s most critical weaknesses, shared among vampires in the Rosario + Vampire universe, is exposure to water. Its purifying properties cause intense pain and physical paralysis, rendering her virtually immobile. However, this vulnerability can be mitigated by infusing the water with specific herbs, as shown during instances where Moka prepares food or bathes—such as when she makes breakfast for Tsukune Aono or takes a bath without adverse effects.

Relationships

Tsukune Aono

Tsukune is both Outer and Inner Moka’s closest companion and central love interest. Outer Moka immediately forms a bond with him after their first meeting, initially due to the allure of his blood. However, her feelings quickly evolve into genuine affection. She becomes deeply devoted to Tsukune, willing to go to great lengths to support and protect him. Over time, their relationship matures from friendship into romantic love. Although their intimate moments are often interrupted, Moka openly expresses her desire to be with Tsukune once after the defeat of the Graffiti Demon, and again when they finally share a kiss. Her love culminates in a declaration of wanting to spend her life with him.

Inner Moka also develops feelings for Tsukune, though her emotions are more reserved and complex. Initially stoic and guarded, Inner Moka gradually softens due to Tsukune’s kindness and selflessness. She recognizes how important he is to Outer Moka and becomes fiercely protective of him. Her growing affection is most apparent during Tsukune’s transformation into a ghoul, where she shows visible emotional distress and even contemplates killing him to prevent further suffering. In later arcs, Inner Moka sustains serious injuries to protect Tsukune and continuously tries to distance him from danger, despite her own feelings. Her quiet devotion becomes more evident throughout Season II, even as she struggles to fully admit her love.

Yukari Sendo
Yukari is a close friend and admirer of Moka. Fascinated by her beauty and charm, Yukari frequently expresses romantic interest in both Moka and Tsukune, even dreaming of a three-way relationship. This dynamic sometimes makes their friendship awkward, especially as Yukari occasionally engages in flirtatious or inappropriate behavior such as groping. Nonetheless, Moka treats Yukari with kindness and patience.

Ruby Tōjō
Initially introduced as an adversary during the Witch’s Knoll arc, Ruby eventually becomes one of Moka’s companions. Among the girls who harbor romantic feelings for Tsukune, Ruby is the least antagonistic toward Moka. While they compete for Tsukune’s attention, Ruby generally maintains a respectful and amicable relationship with her.

Kurumu Kurono
Kurumu is both Moka’s best friend and her most persistent romantic rival. While Outer Moka views Kurumu as a trusted companion, their shared affection for Tsukune frequently leads to comedic arguments and competitive tension. Despite these conflicts, they support one another during moments of emotional turmoil. Inner Moka initially disapproved of Kurumu due to her aggressive attempts to win Tsukune’s heart, but over time comes to respect her. By the end of the manga, the two have grown significantly closer. In a notable moment, Moka almost allows Kurumu to enter Tsukune’s dreams to pursue him romantically, an agreement that quickly devolves into chaos when the rest of the group tries to do the same, prompting Moka to withdraw her permission.

Trivia

    • Moka first awakened her Shinso powers at the age of ten after witnessing her sister, Akua Shuzen, attack their mother. In response, her mother, Akasha Bloodriver, sealed Moka’s powers using the Rosario Cross, which also gave rise to the “Outer Moka” persona.
      • The Rosario Cross could only be removed by someone who truly loved Moka. It remained untouched for years until Tsukune Aono removed it for the first time, an event depicted in both the manga and the anime’s first episode.
      • Due to the seal’s restrictive nature, Inner Moka was initially able to access only a fraction of her full strength. She finally unlocked her full Shinso abilities at the end of the series, following the complete destruction of the Rosario, the end of her self-repression to protect Outer Moka, and a blood transfusion from Tsukune who by then also carried Shinso blood.
      • Forcefully removing the Rosario causes Moka immense physical pain.
      • A recurring gag throughout the series is that whenever Outer Moka is about to share an intimate moment with Tsukune often interpreted as a kiss she instead bites his neck to drink his blood. Despite this, she genuinely desires romantic affection but is regularly interrupted by the other characters.
      • Outer Moka is skilled at cooking, while Inner Moka is notably poor at it. Following the merging of their personalities, it is unknown how her culinary ability has changed.
