Ōno Makoto

Makoto Ōno (also spelled Oono Makoto) is the older sister of Akira Ōno and a member of the powerful Ōno Zaibatsu family in the Hi Score Girl series. Unlike her younger sister, Makoto is more easygoing and sociable, often serving as a supportive figure in Akira’s life while occasionally offering guidance or intervening in matters concerning Akira’s personal relationships.

Personality

Appearance in Anime

Makoto Ōno is portrayed as the opposite of her younger sister, Akira. Outgoing, talkative, and carefree, Makoto exhibits a tomboyish demeanor and shows little concern for fashion or formality. Despite being the elder sibling, she often teases Akira but also harbors a degree of jealousy toward her particularly regarding Akira’s close relationship with Haruo Yaguchi, as Makoto herself has never had a boyfriend.

Makoto feels a sense of guilt over the fact that Akira bears the heavy expectations of the Ōno family, a burden she believes should have been hers. As a result, she supports Akira’s passion for video games and empathizes with her struggles. Makoto openly disapproves of the strict and controlling parenting style within their household, frequently rebelling against figures like Gōda Moemi, to the point that Moemi ultimately gives up on managing her.

In the manga, Makoto is depicted with a somewhat humorous and perverse side, notably begging for a new computer to fulfill certain adult-oriented interests. When unsuccessful, she turns to arcades, drawn to games with mature themes. Makoto speaks openly and unashamedly about these experiences, often sharing them in detail.

Appearance

Makoto Ōno is a college student who closely resembles her younger sister Akira, sharing similar facial features. The primary distinction between them is Makoto’s hair, which is slightly curlier compared to Akira’s straight style.

Makoto is typically seen wearing a casual and comfortable outfit consisting of a yellow-orange wool sweater, gray jeans, and a simple jewel necklace. During an attempt to help Haruo Yaguchi leave Shibuya, Makoto adopts a new, more fashionable look. This makeover includes a black wool long-sleeve top, a red, black, and white checkered skirt, and brown knee-high boots. However, this outfit is short-lived, as Gōda Moemi disapproves of Makoto wearing street fashion, forcibly removes the clothing, and burns it, deeming it inappropriate for a member of the Ōno family.

Relationships

Akira Ōno
Makoto has a caring and protective relationship with her younger sister, Akira, despite occasionally teasing her. She feels a sense of guilt over the fact that Akira bears the heavy expectations of the Ōno family responsibilities that Makoto abandoned. Makoto strongly supports Akira’s passion for video games and encourages her connection with Haruo Yaguchi, wanting Akira to find happiness outside the confines of their family’s strict expectations.

Haruo Yaguchi
Makoto gets along well with Haruo, whom she supports in his relationship with Akira. As a casual gamer herself, Makoto finds it easy to spend time with Haruo, whether hanging out at game centers or visiting his home. Their shared interest in gaming helps strengthen their friendly rapport.

Namie Yaguchi
Makoto bonds easily with Haruo’s mother, Namie, during visits to the Yaguchi household. The two enjoy chatting and gossiping together, united by their mutual support for Haruo and Akira’s relationship. Their interactions are warm and lighthearted, adding a comedic element to the series.

Gaming

Makoto Ōno is portrayed as a casual gamer, in contrast to her younger sister Akira’s exceptional skill. While not as dedicated or competitive, Makoto enjoys spending time at arcades and playing video games recreationally. Her laid-back approach to gaming reflects her easygoing personality.

Makoto’s familiarity with video games also helps her connect with Haruo Yaguchi, and she occasionally joins him at arcades or plays at his home. Though she lacks Akira’s intensity or proficiency, Makoto appreciates gaming as a form of fun and relaxation rather than competition.

Etymology

Makoto’s family name, Ōno (大野), translates to “big field.” Her given name, Makoto (誠), means “sincerity” or “truth.” While Makoto is a unisex name in Japan, it is traditionally used more frequently for males. This pattern of masculine-leaning names is also seen in her younger sister Akira’s name.

Trivia

    • Makoto makes her first appearance early in the story at the airport when the Ōno family is leaving Japan for Los Angeles. Although she is not visually shown in either the manga or the anime during that scene, she is one of the people pulling Akira off of Haruo.
      • In that same airport scene, Makoto’s presence is implied through dialogue, with her voice actress delivering a few lines.
