Aiura Mikoto

Mikoto Aiura (相あい卜うら 命みこと, Hepburn: Aiura Mikoto) is a gyaru soothsayer who believes Kusuo is her soulmate. As Mikoto’s fortunes are canonically always correct unless Kusuo changes the timeline, this must have been true at one point, if not necessarily true at the end of the series. She and Reita tackle problems Kusuo cannot solve on his own. Mikoto is one of the few non-family members who knows about Kusuo’s powers, along with Reita and Touma

Appearance in Anime

Mikoto Aiura is confident, expressive, and open about her psychic abilities, which she actively uses to assist others. Unlike Kusuo Saiki, who hides his powers to avoid attention, Mikoto embraces her role as a soothsayer and offers fortunes to anyone who seeks her help. Her willingness to use her abilities publicly sets her apart from Kusuo and leads to dangerous consequences most notably when she ignores his warnings and finds herself in a life-threatening situation involving an armed gang. Kusuo ultimately intervenes to protect her and obscure the full extent of her abilities from others.

Although she provides free fortunes to students, Mikoto is not above charging adults sometimes even raising her rates unexpectedly. Despite this opportunistic side, she maintains a friendly and outgoing demeanor, quickly forming bonds with others. She becomes fast friends with Chiyo Yumehara and Chisato Mera, affectionately giving them nicknames.

Mikoto also admires Kokomi Teruhashi for her charm and presence, even attempting to mimic her more traditionally feminine style at one point. Despite her social confidence, Mikoto is academically unmotivated. She frequently sleeps during class and openly admits to struggling with her studies, having ranked 165th out of 181 students in her grade.

Appearance

Mikoto Aiura is known for her vibrant gyaru fashion style, which includes long chartreuse hair, manicured and decorated nails, and various accessories. She has noticeably darker skin than most of the main cast. While gyaru fashion often includes artificial tanning, it is unclear whether Mikoto tans deliberately, as she never references it and lacks the pale areas around the eyes commonly associated with cosmetic tanning. However, in a flashback showing her younger self shortly after an accident involving the misuse of her powers, she is depicted with pale skin and light-colored hair, suggesting a change in appearance over time.

Mikoto frequently violates the PK Academy dress code. She forgoes the standard collar flap, ribbon, and socks, and her uniform is styled in a way that exposes her cleavage. Her olive green eyes are complemented by hot pink star and moon stickers worn on her face. Additional accessories include multiple bracelets, three piercings in each ear, and a red hair clip in the shape of the Virgo zodiac sign.

History

Mikoto Aiura transfers to PK Academy with the goal of finding her destined soulmate. Upon joining Kusuo Saiki’s class, her bold gyaru appearance and flirtatious personality quickly catch the attention of her classmates. While the male students are initially disappointed by her lack of the stereotypical “modest girl” attitude, their interest is renewed after noticing her figure. Mikoto teasingly comments on their reactions, joking about their virginity, and implies experience in romantic matters comments that are quickly interrupted by Chiyo Yumehara. Mikoto and Chiyo bond over a shared interest in fortune-telling, though Chiyo is more of a client than a practitioner.

The next day, Mikoto meets Aren Kuboyasu and immediately clings to his arm, describing herself as a masochist attracted to strong men. She also explains her ability to see people’s auras. However, Kusuo’s presence uniquely cancels out her aura sight, forcing her to rely on improvised fortune-telling rituals in her quest for a soulmate. These odd practices include pulling students’ hair, sprinkling pencil shavings on their heads, and putting shavings in their mouths leading to bizarre rumors and at least one male student willingly meeting her in the hopes of receiving special attention.

Initially, Mikoto uses her abilities to follow Kusuo and attempt staged, romantic encounters. Upon realizing that Kusuo finds these antics bothersome, she shifts her approach. Similar to Kokomi Teruhashi, she successfully invites Kusuo out by offering sweets, knowing his weakness for coffee jelly. Although he insists he isn’t interested in spending time with her, Kusuo remains with her at the café and later agrees to a dessert date.

Mikoto’s powers also prove useful in helping others. She assists Chisato Mera in finding her missing father by correctly identifying his location in Puerto Rico. After Kusuo’s intervention, her actions help prevent Kiyoi Mera’s suicide and reunite the Mera family. Despite initially clashing with Kusuo over her open use of psychic powers, she shows a willingness to help without expecting anything in return such as when she responds to Kusuo’s emergency call and jokes about a misunderstanding after undressing in his room, believing his invitation implied something romantic.

Outside of school, Mikoto works a part-time job where she uses her abilities to locate missing people, objects, and pets, and to provide romantic advice often charging adults high fees. Her powers draw the attention of a gang seeking to exploit her, leading to a life-threatening situation. Kusuo intervenes, neutralizing the threat. After this event, Mikoto agrees to be more cautious about publicly using her abilities and is no longer shown selling her services, though Kusuo quietly ensures that her previous clients benefit from her assistance, including preventing a suicide and aiding a couple destined to meet in Zimbabwe.

Mikoto plays a pivotal role during a national crisis when Kusuo works to prevent a volcanic eruption. She uses her abilities to direct Kusuo’s clones to the most strategic locations to halt the lava flow, making her a key player in saving Japan.

Later, while shopping at the mall, Mikoto earns the favor of Kusuo’s grandmother, Kumi Saiki, after defending her from judgmental customers. Their bond strengthens enough that the two even go clubbing together.

Etymology

The surname Aiura (相卜) is composed of 相 (ai), meaning “phase,” “aspect,” “countenance,” or “mutual,” and 卜 (ura), meaning “divination,” “prophecy,” or “fortune-telling.” Together, the name fittingly reflects Mikoto’s role as a soothsayer and her association with predictive abilities.

Her given name, Mikoto (命), can mean “life,” “command,” “destiny,” or “decree.” It is a term often associated with divine will or royal authority, reinforcing her spiritual significance and the prophetic weight of her character in the series.
