Laura Bodewig (ラウラ・ボーデヴィッヒ, Raura Bōdevihhi) is a fictional character in the Infinite Stratos series. She is introduced as a first-year transfer student in Class One at the IS Academy and serves as Germany’s IS Representative Candidate. Laura initially appears as an antagonist but later allies with the protagonist, Ichika Orimura. She holds the position of commander of the German military unit Schwarzer Hase (Black Rabbit). Laura is the fifth main heroine to be introduced in the series and is revealed to be the younger sister of Chloe Chronicle.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Laura Bodewig exhibits a cold, aloof, and highly disciplined demeanor, shaped by her upbringing within a military environment. Initially antisocial and confrontational, she regards most people around her with disdain, stemming from a superiority complex linked to her status as a genetically engineered super soldier. She harbors a strong sense of pride in her abilities, often dismissing others as inferior. This is evident during her early confrontations at the IS Academy, where she criticizes fellow Representative Candidates such as Cecilia Alcott and Lingyin Huang, questioning the legitimacy of their third-generation IS units and attributing their abilities to national background rather than talent.
Laura’s initial hostility is particularly directed at Ichika Orimura, whom she blames for Chifuyu Orimura’s forfeiture in a past match, an event she views as a blemish on Chifuyu’s otherwise flawless record. Despite her antagonism, Laura holds Chifuyu in the highest regard, bordering on reverence. She views Chifuyu as the ideal soldier and mentor, even attempting to persuade her to return to Germany, believing the IS Academy does not deserve her expertise.
Due to her rigid military upbringing, Laura lacks social awareness and often misinterprets common interpersonal interactions. For instance, after declaring Ichika her “husband” following a misunderstanding, she fails to grasp the implications of such a statement in a school setting. She also exhibits a curious blend of shyness and pride, particularly in matters of appearance initially indifferent to her looks, Laura gradually becomes more self-conscious in an effort to gain Ichika’s attention, though she remains unabashed in scenarios that would normally provoke embarrassment, such as being undressed in front of him.
Laura is forthright with her feelings and rarely conceals her intentions, a trait that sets her apart from the other heroines. Her straightforwardness is best illustrated when she openly kisses Ichika in front of their classmates after developing feelings for him. While this boldness can cause friction, especially among her peers who struggle to express similar emotions, Laura’s confidence often masks a deeper vulnerability evident when she reacts shyly to unfamiliar experiences, such as wearing feminine attire or engaging in leisure activities.
Appearance
Laura Bodewig is characterized by her striking and distinctive features. She has pale, almost porcelain-white skin, long silver hair, and a vivid red right eye. Her left eye is typically covered by a black eyepatch, concealing a golden artificial eye, an outcome of a failed experiment intended to enhance her compatibility as an IS pilot. The procedure left a lasting impact both physically and symbolically, marking her as a product of military engineering.
Among the main heroines of Infinite Stratos, Laura is notably the shortest and most petite, which contrasts with her stern demeanor and combat proficiency. Her appearance often evokes comparisons to a doll, a sentiment echoed by Ichika Orimura, who once remarked on the gemstone-like quality of her artificial eye and her delicate facial features.
At the IS Academy, Laura wears a modified version of the standard uniform. Instead of a skirt, her uniform includes pants, reflecting her pragmatic and militaristic background. During IS training and combat simulations, she dons a gray variant of the academy’s training attire. In contrast to her otherwise serious wardrobe, her choice of sleepwear adds a touch of levity to her character: black cat-themed pajamas gifted by Charlotte Dunois, which she eventually adopts as part of her nightly routine.
History
Laura Bodewig possesses one of the most tragic and complex backgrounds among the heroines of Infinite Stratos. Engineered as part of Germany’s military super-soldier program, she was conceived as a test-tube child with the explicit purpose of becoming a living weapon. Her upbringing was devoid of traditional emotional development or childhood experiences; instead, she was subjected to intense training and educated solely in military doctrine and combat tactics. Socialization was limited to what was necessary for functioning within a chain of command, leaving her isolated from normal human interaction.
Laura demonstrated exceptional aptitude in all aspects of conventional military training, consistently ranking at the top of her unit. However, the emergence of Infinite Stratos (IS) technology introduced an unforeseen variable into the program. Unlike conventional warfare, IS piloting demanded a different set of reflexes, intuition, and synchronization that Laura had not been conditioned for. In response, the German military initiated a drastic measure: implanting her with a prototype artificial left eye, an internalized, scaled-down version of the Hyper-Sensor system designed to enhance sensory perception and interface compatibility with IS units.
The procedure was only partially successful. While the artificial eye was intended to boost Laura’s responsiveness during IS operation even without active IS assistance it malfunctioned, becoming a constant, uncontrollable sensory input. Rather than improving her abilities, the enhancement hindered her overall performance, causing her rankings to decline. The very program that created her began to view her as a defective asset, further isolating her from her peers.
It was during this low point that Laura encountered Chifuyu Orimura, who was temporarily assigned as an IS instructor to the German military. In exchange for information regarding her brother Ichika’s whereabouts who had been kidnapped during the Second Mondo Grosso tournament Chifuyu agreed to train the German unit. Laura was immediately captivated by Chifuyu’s strength, composure, and skill, viewing her as the embodiment of what a soldier should be. With Chifuyu’s guidance, Laura managed to recover her confidence and reclaim her top status.
This mentorship had a profound impact on Laura, who developed an almost reverent admiration for Chifuyu. Her devotion eventually became obsessive. When Chifuyu once spoke fondly of her younger brother, displaying a rare moment of softness, Laura perceived this emotional vulnerability as a flaw. Having been conditioned to view tenderness as a sign of weakness, Laura could not reconcile the image of her ideal soldier with Chifuyu’s affection toward Ichika. This led her to view Ichika as the cause of Chifuyu’s perceived “weakness,” fueling her initial antagonism toward him and igniting her desire to defeat him.
Infinite Stratos and Abilities
As a genetically engineered super-soldier created by the German military, Laura Bodewig possesses enhanced physical capabilities that far exceed those of an ordinary person. Despite her petite frame, she exhibits remarkable reflexes, endurance, and tactical proficiency, the result of intense military conditioning from an early age. Even prior to acquiring her own Infinite Stratos (IS) unit, Laura was already capable of holding her own against seasoned adult soldiers in both armed and unarmed combat.
Laura specializes in close-quarters combat, with a particular affinity for combat knives. Her proficiency is such that she can match Houki Shinonono, an expert in kenjutsu in direct melee combat. Her military training, combined with her natural aptitude, makes her one of the most formidable first-year students at the IS Academy.
Her combat prowess is recognized by her peers, notably by Cecilia Alcott, who ranks Laura as the strongest among the first-year Representative Candidates in overall combat effectiveness. This assessment is supported by Laura’s decisive victories over both Cecilia and Lingyin Huang, each of whom holds A-Rank status in their respective nations.
Laura’s abilities are further refined under the mentorship of Chifuyu Orimura, a former Mondo Grosso champion and one of the most skilled IS pilots in the world. Training under Chifuyu greatly enhanced Laura’s technique and battle instincts.
One of Laura’s most distinctive assets is the Odin’s Eye, a sophisticated artificial left eye and a compact version of the Hyper-Sensor suite. Dubbed “The Eye That Surpasses the World,” this implant dramatically accelerates neural processing, enabling Laura to react and make decisions at extreme speeds, especially during high-intensity combat. While the eye grants her a significant edge in IS battles, its unstable nature stemming from the incomplete success of the implantation procedure has occasionally hindered her performance when it fails to regulate sensory input.
Etymology
The name Laura is of Latin origin, derived from the word laurus, meaning “laurel”, a symbol of victory and honor in ancient Rome. It is commonly used in many European languages and often associated with strength and achievement.
Her surname Bodewig is of German origin. While not a common surname, it phonetically suggests a noble or aristocratic lineage, consistent with many Germanic naming conventions used in fiction. The use of a distinctly German surname reinforces Laura’s nationality and her background as Germany’s IS Representative Candidate within the series.
