Houki Shinonono

Houki Shinonono (Japanese: 篠ノ之 箒, Shinonono Hōki) is one of the main heroines of the Infinite Stratos series and the first to be introduced. She is a first-year student at the IS Academy and the younger sister of Tabane Shinonono, the genius inventor behind the Infinite Stratos system. Houki is also the first childhood friend of the series’ protagonist, Ichika Orimura, and plays a central role in the early narrative as both a close companion and romantic interest.

Personality

Appearance in Anime

Houki Shinonono is characterized by her stern, disciplined nature, shaped by her upbringing in a traditional dojo and shrine environment. From a young age, she was immersed in kendo and martial values, which contributed to her stoic demeanor and difficulty in forming social bonds. Prior to attending the IS Academy, her only close friend was Ichika Orimura, who protected her from childhood bullying. Despite her feelings for him, Houki struggled to express affection openly even asking him to use her first name under the pretense that there were too many “Shinononos” in her family.

The separation from Ichika deeply affected Houki, leaving her with unresolved emotional conflict. Though kendo taught her the ideals of self-control, she often used it as an outlet for frustration, leading to overly aggressive behavior. Early in the series, she is portrayed as emotionally volatile, quick to anger, and prone to lashing out without fully understanding a situation. This tendency to act on emotion causes her to make hasty decisions and creates friction with both peers and instructors. She also exhibits a “might makes right” mentality, equating victory with validation and believing that winning will resolve her problems.

Houki’s pride and stubbornness often prevent her from admitting fault, a flaw noted by Ichika, who observes that she rarely accepts criticism or seeks reconciliation unless prompted. She tends to internalize guilt, sometimes desiring punishment for her mistakes while resisting forgiveness, believing she doesn’t deserve kindness, especially from Ichika. While she has expressed a desire to change these habits, progress remains slow.

Despite these shortcomings, Houki possesses a kind and loyal nature beneath her abrasive exterior. Over time, she softens toward Ichika and becomes more open in her interactions with him and others. Although still prone to scolding him when irritated, she ultimately treats him with warmth and affection. She also develops friendly relationships with fellow classmates and rivals such as Charlotte, Laura, Rin, Kanzashi, Tatenashi, and Cecilia, sharing a mutual respect forged through combat and camaraderie.

Houki harbors insecurities about her femininity and appearance, largely stemming from childhood teasing and her tomboyish image. She is visibly uncomfortable in revealing or traditionally feminine clothing and often becomes shy when receiving compliments from Ichika. Nonetheless, she gradually becomes more confident in expressing herself physically eventually becoming comfortable with casual physical contact, such as holding hands or linking arms.

Her feelings for Ichika become increasingly conflicted as other girls vie for his attention. After witnessing him embrace Cecilia during her birthday celebration, Houki begins to feel insecure and jealous, even though she rationally understands that Ichika’s kindness is impartial. This emotional turmoil culminates during the Akatsubaki Incident, when her distress activates the Akatsubaki IS system, which momentarily overrides her control and attacks her friends. After the incident, Houki reflects on the consequences of her emotional immaturity particularly her role in Chifuyu Orimura’s retirement from IS combat and resolves to grow stronger by facing her insecurities rather than hiding from them.

Ultimately, Houki evolves from a prideful and emotionally guarded girl into someone more self-aware and grounded. Even after losing her personal IS, she finds peace in returning to her roots as an ordinary student, committed to growth without relying on external power.

Appearance

Houki Shinonono is a striking teenage girl of average height with a slender yet athletic build and a noticeably curvaceous figure. She has long, dark brown hair, typically styled in a loose ponytail that splits into two distinct sections toward the ends, secured with a green and black ribbon. Her eyes are a deep shade of blue, and she is often noted for her graceful features and prominent bust.

Houki typically wears the standard IS Academy uniform, though with a personalized touch, she pairs it with white stockings and black knee-high boots featuring white soles. Following the events of the battle against the Silver Gospel, she replaces her usual green ribbon with a red, black, and white ribbon, a birthday gift from Ichika which she begins wearing regularly.

Her original IS training uniform is consistent with those worn by the other female students. However, after being granted access to the Akatsubaki unit, Houki receives a specialized uniform. This version is predominantly white, featuring a black neckline and black accents along the legs, reflecting her elevated status and compatibility with a unique IS. In standby mode, her IS manifests as gold and white bell-like attachments on her wrists.

History

Before the events of Infinite Stratos, Houki Shinonono shared a close bond with Ichika Orimura, having grown up together as childhood friends. Living in a household that operated a traditional kendo dojo, Houki developed an early passion for the martial art. Her dedication led her to compete at a national level, and she eventually claimed victory in the national kendo tournament held one year prior to the series’ beginning.

Her connection to Tabane Shinonono, the eccentric genius who invented the Infinite Stratos system, dramatically altered the course of her life. Six years before the main story, Houki made a promise with Ichika: if she won the national kendo tournament of their grade, he would become her boyfriend. However, the tournament coincided with the global revelation of the IS. Because of her familial ties to Tabane, Houki and her family were placed under government protection, forcing her to withdraw from the event and relocate. The incident led to a deep resentment toward her sister, whom Houki blames for separating her from Ichika and neglecting their family in pursuit of her research.

At an unspecified point between Chifuyu Orimura’s time in Germany and the beginning of the series, Houki was entrusted with the Akatsubaki, a powerful prototype IS developed by Tabane. Empowered by this unprecedented gift, Houki challenged Chifuyu to a duel. Although the outcome of the battle remains unclear, it is known that both Chifuyu and her IS unit, Kurezakura, sustained severe damage, leading to Chifuyu’s retirement from active combat. Overcome with guilt for injuring her mentor and idol, Houki experienced emotional trauma so intense that Tabane took it upon herself to seal away Houki’s memories of the incident.

Infinite Stratos and Abilities

Houki Shinonono is an accomplished martial artist with expertise in kendo and iaido, both of which she has practiced since childhood. Her dedication to swordsmanship led her to win a national kendo tournament one year before the events of Infinite Stratos. Houki’s fighting style is predominantly offensive, relying heavily on raw power. This one-dimensional approach, while effective in straightforward combat, has occasionally left her vulnerable against opponents who rely on speed and technique, such as Charlotte Dunois during the Grade-Level Tournament.

As an IS pilot, Houki initially demonstrated slightly above-average capabilities. While piloting the standard training unit Uchigane, she was able to contend briefly with more advanced pilots despite her limited formal experience. However, her understanding of IS theory was lacking, often leading to communication issues with teammates. In the light novel, she is ranked as a C-Rank user, a designation believed to be influenced by her unresolved emotional conflict with her sister, Tabane Shinonono. This would later change in Volume 7, when her compatibility rating unexpectedly increased to S-Rank. The sudden upgrade puzzled even elite pilot Tatenashi Sarashiki, who speculated that the boost may have been influenced by Houki’s familial connection to Tabane more than her piloting skill.

Over the course of the series, Houki pilots several IS units. She begins with Uchigane, a standard-issue training model, and later receives Akatsubaki, a top-tier custom IS developed by Tabane. While Akatsubaki has the highest performance specs among all IS units in the series, Houki’s limited experience prevents her from fully utilizing its potential, placing her on relatively equal footing with the other main heroines in actual combat. Prior to the start of the series, she also wielded Akatsuki, a prototype IS known as the “ruler” of all units due to its ability, Code Red, which suppresses the performance of nearby IS. With Akatsuki, Houki seriously injured Chifuyu Orimura and her Kurezakura IS in battle, an event that caused Houki overwhelming guilt and led Tabane to seal her memories. Following the Akatsubaki Incident, Houki lost access to both Akatsubaki and Akatsuki, returning to life as an ordinary IS Academy student.

In addition to her IS proficiency, Houki has shown signs of abnormal physical strength. This trait, while often used for comedic effect—such as denting a locker while flustered—has real combat utility. She once broke through Laura Bodewig’s partially-deployed Absolute Immobility Circuit using only a regular sword and raw force. Outside of combat, Houki is portrayed as a skilled cook and a capable swimmer. Ichika himself has complimented her abilities in both areas, highlighting her as a well-rounded individual beyond her warrior persona.

Etymology

The given name Houki (箒) translates to “broom” in Japanese, a term often associated with traditional household tools, but also metaphorically tied to cleansing or discipline, traits reflective of her stern and principled nature.

Her surname, Shinonono (篠ノ之), is composed of several kanji: 篠 (shino), meaning “dwarf bamboo”; ノ (no), a possessive particle; and 之 (no), an archaic form of “this.” Combined, the name has a poetic and classical tone, possibly emphasizing grace, tradition, and connection to nature.

Trivia

    • Houki is the first character in the series to confess romantic feelings to Ichika Orimura, with the second being Kanzashi Sarashiki. However, her confessions were met with humorous misfortune: the first was drowned out by fireworks, and the second occurred while she was half-asleep leaving Ichika unsure if he had heard her correctly.
    • Houki’s IS unit, Akatsubaki, and its katana-based weaponry are a tribute to the MBF-P02 Astray Red Frame from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Astray. Both units are designed for close-quarters combat and wield swords as their primary weapons. Akatsubaki’s silhouette, foot-mounted blades, and red-white color scheme also draw inspiration from the ZGMF-X19A Infinite Justice from Gundam SEED Destiny.
    • Apart from Ichika, Houki holds deep respect for her father, Ryuuin Shinonono, whom she admires.
    • Houki is the only main heroine in the series who is not affiliated with any national representative body. Due to her familial link to Tabane Shinonono, the creator of the IS, she is uniquely granted access to a 4th Generation IS, Akatsubaki which is unaffiliated with any government or international organization.
    • In Episode 2, Houki is briefly shown in her underwear while changing in the locker room. Following a brief flashback, she is then seen fully dressed in her school uniform, suggesting a sudden transition between scenes.
