Brawler

The Brawler (喧嘩屋, Kenka-ya) is one of the main characters in the anime series Akudama Drive. A powerful and impulsive fighter, he is known for causing widespread destruction in pursuit of worthy opponents. His love for combat and disregard for collateral damage led to his classification as an Akudama and the imposition of a 348-year prison sentence. Despite his violent tendencies, Brawler displays a strong personal code and develops meaningful connections throughout the series, particularly with Hoodlum and his fellow Akudama.

Appearance in Anime

Brawler is a tall, muscular man with dark skin and a highly distinctive look. He has shoulder-length maroon dreadlocks, which are adorned with several decorative binders, including one featuring a skull-shaped ornament. His facial features are sharp, and he sports a trimmed goatee along with dark, cat-like eyeliner, contributing to his fierce and imposing presence.

His outfit consists of a military green high-collared coat, which he wears unzipped to reveal his bare chest, emphasizing his confidence and physical strength. He pairs the coat with dark cargo pants and black combat boots, suited for his brawler persona. Brawler also wears two different beaded necklaces, adding to his rugged, street-fighter aesthetic.

Personality

Brawler is characterized by his straightforward and unshakably honest nature. He lives by a simple creed: strength defines worth, and nothing brings him more fulfillment than engaging in a fight against a powerful opponent. He is fearless in the face of death, valuing a good battle more than his own survival. This single-minded devotion to combat often leads others to label him as “simpleminded” or a “meathead,” though Brawler remains undeterred by such judgments.

Despite his impulsive and combative nature, Brawler exhibits a strong sense of camaraderie and loyalty. He frequently expresses friendly respect through fist bumps, symbolizing mutual recognition and bonding with those he trusts. Beneath his aggressive exterior lies a genuine, almost childlike enthusiasm for life’s challenges, making him one of the more emotionally transparent members of the Akudama.

Background

Brawler earned his place on Kansai’s most wanted list due to his reckless obsession with combat and his relentless pursuit of strong opponents, regardless of the collateral damage left in his wake. His repeated involvement in destructive brawls and violent incidents throughout the region led to widespread chaos and instability. As a result, he was officially designated as an Akudama and sentenced to 348 years in prison, a reflection of the extreme threat he posed to public safety. His criminal record is less about calculated crime and more a testament to his unrestrained passion for fighting, which ultimately defined both his reputation and his fate.

Abilities and Equipment

As his name suggests, Brawler is an expert in unarmed combat, capable of overwhelming opponents with sheer brute force and physical technique. He is able to defeat multiple police robots with ease, despite their ability to incapacitate ordinary individuals. His raw power and combat instincts allow him to stand toe-to-toe with elite fighters, including the highly trained Execution Division Master—whom Brawler ultimately defeats using nothing but his bare hands.

Brawler possesses superhuman strength, speed, and durability, far beyond the limits of an average human. He can hurl people into the ceiling with a single arm, leap massive distances, and uproot enormous stone pillars, showcasing his extraordinary physical capabilities. His endurance is equally impressive; even after being stabbed by the Master’s energy sword, Brawler continues to fight without hesitation, demonstrating a remarkable resistance to pain.

In addition to his physical toughness, Brawler displays an unusual immunity to toxins and chemical agents. This is highlighted during a confrontation with the Doctor, who releases a gas potent enough to paralyze an elephant. Brawler remains completely unaffected, much to her shock, further underscoring his exceptional constitution.

Above all, Brawler’s defining attribute is his indomitable fighting spirit. He thrives in the chaos of battle, driven by an unwavering desire to face strong opponents. Even when critically wounded, he refuses to retreat or surrender, pressing forward with relentless willpower until his final breath. This passion for combat, more than any ability, is what ultimately defines him as a warrior.

Legacy

Brawler’s death leaves a lasting emotional impact on the remaining Akudama, particularly Hoodlum, with whom he had developed a close bond. Shortly after Brawler’s fatal battle with the Execution Division Master, Hoodlum arrives at the scene and finds his companion’s lifeless body. Though powerless to help, he is deeply moved by the loss. At the same moment, the Execution Division Apprentice discovers her master’s corpse. In an act of revenge and grief, Hoodlum seizes the Master’s weapon and attacks the Apprentice, stabbing her in the eye before returning to the others to confirm that Brawler had died.

Brawler’s influence continues even after his death. Later, during the ambush at the Shinkansen, Hoodlum having been manipulated by the Doctor threatens to kill Swindler. However, Swindler appeals to his conscience by invoking Brawler’s memory, reminding Hoodlum of the bond they shared and the respect Brawler had shown him. She emphasizes how much Brawler had believed in him, framing Hoodlum as someone worthy of admiration. Her words deeply resonate with him, and Brawler’s legacy becomes the turning point that restores Hoodlum’s sense of purpose. In a final act of redemption, Hoodlum chooses to betray the Doctor, sacrificing his life in the process, an ultimate tribute to the friend who had seen strength in him when no one else did.
